In trying to determine Tron's home video performance I found this that the number of DVD units it sold in its first week was this: 784,453. With another 108,735 copies of the original Tron sold the same week.

Doesn't sound like much but according to this article: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6221, Tron not only set a record for % of Blu-ray units sold (68%) out of total home video media, its Blu-ray editions out-sold the DVD 2:1. This doesn't include Digital downloads. The original Tron had 78% of its units sold as Blu-ray.

Since it was discussed before that home video could play a major role in continuing the franchise, how do you think this news will impact its future? Obviously, sales in the coming weeks will be key to judging its success in the video market overall.

I think, as you noted, that "wait and see" will have to be the governing principle for the immediate future.....

Trying to figure out the sales data is just way harder than it should be. So DVD ales are at 784,453, with blu ray sales being double that. Figure about $30 for each blu ray sold, disney made over $47 million in blu ray sales alone; with the dvd sales, home media sales was atleast $60 million.

Update on sales:

Legacy sold 266,247 more DVD copies, bringing its total to 1,050,700 copies (and $17,029,665 in revenue) in two weeks. Once again though, the Blu-ray outsold the DVD, but by what ratio I don't know.

Original's reissue has now sold 152,047 DVD copies with $2,583,279 in total revenue. Blu-ray editions sold this week I don't know either.

I'm not sure that guess on first week Blu-ray sales is right flavious27, $47 million was the total sales figures for all Blu-ray titles that week. My guess is that Legacy's were $25-$30 million as that would still be double the DVD sales. That guess would make first week video sales (DVD and Blu-ray) about $37-$42 million in total.

A shame there's no site that tracks sales numbers for Blu-ray titles like DVDs.

The music, set design and look of TRON legacy was fantastic. Everything else was pretty terrible. I'd love to see a ride out of it. And there is no way anyone could call it a bomb. The movie made some money. They just need a better script.

The fake young Jeff Bridges was creepy. That mouth looked like it was created to devour souls... Computer generated souls. But the arcade scene with Seperate Ways playing was great.

It's tough to figure exact numbers based on that. Remember there's several options: DVD only, 2-Disc DVD/Blu-ray, 4-Disc DVD/Blu-ray/Blu-ray 3-D/Digital Copy, and the 5-Disc "Holy :dazzle:" Edition (which is the 4-Disc version plus a DVD copy of the original Tron). That one puts you back only $70.

Seriously, they better come through with a ride.

It is hard to track the disc reports. All that we heard was that the blu ray sales were double the dvd with either the dvd/blu ray combo or plain blu ray having 900k sales alone. The first week tron on dvd sold a million copies, the hollywood reporter said that 68% of the first week unit sales were blu ray and the rest (32%) was dvd. So there were 2 million blu rays sold, with a price of $20 each that would be $40 million; with a price of $30 that would be $60 million in sales.

Also, do you have a source for the total weekly sales of blu ray being $45 million? That just sounds really low for 2011.

The crazy awesome light disc case looks cool, but I wasn't going to pay $65 for it at target.

It took us 3 stores to find the new Tron on Blu-Ray the first day and 5 days and 6 store visits to find the Original Tron when the home versions were released.

Underestimates at stores were HUGE!

Well that sucks. It took us awhile to locate them in target because they put them in a weird place.

You were not alone in the hunt...of course, I wanted the 3-D Blu-Ray, and I wanted to buy the original on Blu-Ray at the same time to get the $8 discount.

DHS. Really, a movie-based theme park can fit just about every ride Disney has, is, or will make. And the ones that don't fit would need only a minor tweak to theme it to a movie. Anytime there's a potential new ride and the discussion turns to "what park?", I always use this rhyme:

Don't know where it goes?
Put it in the Studios!

Disney isn't making $29.99 per Blu-ray (or DVD) -- they're sold mostly by resellers, not Disney retail stores, so the aforementioned profit is cut in half at least. Plus, factor in all other expenses (shipping, advertisement, etc) and Disney's net profit isn't as high as quoted above (still a lot of cash though!).

I think the biggest factor will be the ongoing success of the franchise, not necessarily initial profits. In other words, what is the shelf life of a related attraction? How long can it be used to drum up new business at the parks? That's the difficult question and one that's hard to prognosticate.

Huh, the profit margins for home media are much higher than first run releases where studios only get a little more than 1/2. If retailers were keeping half, amazon and best buy would have a net income higher than 1 billion on revenue of 34 billion or 49 billion.

According to the LA Times Hero Complex Blog, the creative team is pulling together ideas to present to Disney for Tron 3.

Lots of Tron-related info for any Tron fans out there.

Exerpt:

JW: Where does “Tron 3″ stand at this point?

JK: We’re pulling together ideas. We’ve got some ideas we’re really excited about. Obviously, we hinted at a lot of opportunities at the end of our film in that final scene between Sam and Quorra. We’re at the script stage, and we want to develop the right story and the right script and make sure we can get the right team together for Disney to make that decision sometime in the future.

SL: We really have a lot of work to do to see what’s possible… but I have, as you know, a great deal of faith in the Users. It’s a challenge. As one of the creative people involved with it, it’s our job to put something in front of Disney that Disney can’t say “no” to, but it’s their decision. There’s so many threads that can be picked up on now. A lot of the hard work has been done to get to this point and now it’s time to capitalize on it if we get a chance.

Interesting news, thanks for posting.

Al Lutz article this week mentioned:

"The decision to extend elecTRONica through the summer is also turning out to be a good decision financially, even though the movie disappointed Burbank at the box office. But you wouldn’t be able to tell the movie wasn’t a blockbuster from the recent customer survey results of happy Annual Passholder’s dancing the night away, and drink sales at the mobile bars that are still raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars per week above their already healthy sales goals."

Meanwhile Blu-ray continues to boost sales of Legacy with week 3 of release having 50% of sales come from Blu-ray and week 4 with 54%. Total DVD-only sales are at 1,273,973 copies after 4 weeks.

That sounds very promising. I hope that it not only translates to another movie and attraction in wdw, but also an almost exact copy of the End of Line Club.

Look, we already have a logo for it:
