Central Florida Earthquake

We had a small tremor in the southern most point of New York a couple of years ago.

Earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world, so don't be afraid or glad that earthquakes are going to replace hurricanes.:animwink:

Wow. Thanks for letting us all know. That's crazy. I hope this doesn't start to become some new natural phenomena for the Gulf coast states (since I live in Louisiana). We have enough to deal with already with stupid hurricanes!

We have minor ones here in Alabama. It's pretty common. All over the world there are minor quakes every day. Well over 100 (I can't remember the exact number).
Back in the 1800's, there was one so strong that the Mississippi flowed backwards for several days.

I didn't feel anything in Clearwater, about 90 miles SW of WDW. That's still really odd, even a tremble. The only earthquake I've ever experienced was at Universal. :lookaroun

From someone on the weather board that I read...

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred about 250 miles (405 km) south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida at 8:56 AM MDT, Sep 10, 2006 (10:56 AM EDT in Florida). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. This earthquake was felt in parts of Florida, Georgia and Alabama. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time.

Earthquake Information for Caribbean

This earthquake was too small to cause a tsunami.

That is crazy! I hope that everyone is okay and not too shaken up.

But, to be on the safe side, anyone who is planning to go to the World Sept29-Oct2 should go ahead and cancel their trips:lookaroun:lookaroun:lookaroun

A tsunami is caused when the earthquake causes an actual crack in the surface of the ocean or an underwater landslide.

Anything that causes a massive displacement of water.

Yeah.. i felt that one back when I lived in new york, and people thought I was crazy. This time, I actually messaged people as SOON as i felt it, knowing full well I could be wrong about it being an earthquake. No longer crazy am i!

My window rattled a little bit yesterday, I thought it was weird since I never heard it before. Maybe it was from the shuttle launch...

HUH? :veryconfu

from http://www.greatriver.com/nature.htm

Joel writes: When I lived along the Mississippi, I heard of a time and an event which caused the river to flow backwards for several days. Can you elaborate on this, please?

Joel, you're asking about the New Madrid Earthquake in 1811-12. It was strong enough to ring church bells in Boston, and the few inhabitants of New Madrid and Caruthersville, Missouri, reported that the earth rolled in waves like the sea and the river flowed upstream. In fact, boats were found on the river banks forty miles upstream of where they had been moored. Most likely the river flowed north for a short time as it rushed to fill a depression that formed to the east of the Mississippi that was nearly 100 miles long, six miles wide and 10 to 50 feet deep. Today Reelfoot lake is located in the lowest portion of this depression.

Agreed. Also I think everyone should be on the safe side and cancel any trips that fall on the date of 10-5 thru 10-8 and the weekend of 10-14 and 10-15.

Unless of course you have previous arrangements to meet a little green guy in the parks at that time. If so I think it is worth the risk.

You can't be too careful with these things.

Didnt feel anything here in Lakeland. I walked inside, turned on BayNews 9 just in time to see them screaming ZOMG!!!!111 EARTHQAKESZZ!!, and I was like umm what?

Its nothing to worry about, like others have said, small quakes happen everyday. Its just convient for my Marine Bio teacher, since were already working on plates and such, she'll have another thing to quiz us on.

I've lived for three years above two tectonic plates, surrounded by four very large volcanoes and I've not once felt an earthquake.

Y'all live in a swamp and you get one. What gives?

"Now class.. Who can tell me which way Spaceship Earth would roll if dislodge by a 10.0 on the richter scale? Sally?"

"North?"

"That's kinda right sally, North toward the parking lot because Earth Station prevents southbound travel, but the ensuing flood from the tank at the Living Seas would also direct it slightly to the east.. So the answer is Northeast - right over the kennel - kiss Rover goodbye."

Yes, I know what causes a tsunami. I just quoted what had been reported on the website.

Ever see the cartoon where SSE rolled off the pylons and hit the castle like a bunch of bowling pins (complete with sound effects, of coarse!)??

I don't remember what cartoon it was, but it was pretty funny!
