Castle: Attraction or a dressing room?

Just got back from our two week trip, and everything was great except one thing kept annoying me and it really came to a head the last night we were in MK. The castle is closed now almost all the time!

Between six daily showings of "Dream Along with Mickey" using the Castle as a backstage and stage access, closing it from 9:00 to 6:00 and then closing it again for Wishes, most days there was a one hour window or less the Castle was open to walk through. This is not only a problem for those who like to look at the murals or those who just want the experience of walking through WDW's most popular icon, but also it causes major headaches in terms of traffic flow around the castle, especially at night when the parade and Wishes are on top of each other and Wishes closes additional access around the Castle. The last night there we decided to skip the parade and Wishes heading for Fantasyland so our three year old could do all of it one more time before our trip was over. It took almost 20 minutes to almost push (and who wants to push people at WDW?) our way from the Plaza Inn around to the front of the Castle only to find it was closed off for Wishes which was still over one and half hours away! The cast member advised us to take the bridge which leads to Starlight Cafe and MTP, but we told her that was absolutly packed with people trying to come into the hub, there was even a guy over there stuck in a wheelchair with no where to go, totally locked in the crowd! She gave us some Peter Pan FPs and told us to run for Liberty Square before they cut that route off for the parade. Not the kind of stress I want at WDW and yes we complained at City Hall after and I even offered a bit of advice to have a Parade Crossing added at the "Starlight Cafe Bridge" to improve the traffic flow there. I even mentioned the poor guy in the wheelchair.

So I wonder two things, seeing Castle stage shows are a regular thing, shouldn't Disney by now figured out a better way to get cast to and from the show. I seem to remember one version of the castle stage that used to raise and lower with the cast entering the stage while lowered, could be wrong on that, but if not, is there a utildor under the hub near the stage so they could set up underground access? Also I wonder with the addition of the Celebrate Street Party, there is almost always something happening in the hub, so maybe another possibility would be to reduce the number of Castle shows during the day allowing for the Castle time to be open. Maybe every two hours for shows, rather than almost every hour. This one I have mixed feelings on as the constant shows in the hub seem to really help to reduce the lines in the park!

This issue you bring up is why I asked a while ago if you could still go through the castle. I'm older so I really don't care for the Castle Stage shows and I fail to see the need to have six shows daily. I think if they spread them out they could easily cut them back to 3 shows a day. Start one shortly after opening, then another around lunch time, with the third one ocurring at 4:00 or 4:30.

By the time 5:30-6:00 roll around you have people starting to line up for SpectroMagic and Wishes. The hub and Mainstreet USA can become so clogged that you can't even get through, and a lot of that right now has to do with the later castle show.

I understand that little kids like to see the characters dancing on the stage and infront of the castle, but we don't need to see it six times a day. I miss being able to walk through the castle tunnel and seeing the beautiful murals and getting that "feeling" you get by going into Fantasyland through the castle.

I don't recall ever being able to walk through the castle in my trips to WDW. I've seen clips on commercials or videos where it shows a family walking through the castle, but as far as I can remember, I've only ever been able to enter the castle from FantasyLand, to go into the store (where BBB is now). But I remember always seeing the door closed which goes to the other side.

I too find the Castle the most disappointing aspect of MK - even when you can get into it there are buggies (strollers) parked all over for BBB; Sleeping Beauty Castle at DLP has a Crystal and Heraldry shop and the Christmas shop as you walk in; upstairs it has the Sleeping Beauty tableau and stained glass windows ; and in the dungeon underneath there is an animatronic dragon in its lair. The whole thing is themed and accessible.

Now, see...that's just sad.

Brief rant.
Top three things wrong with the Castle:
1. Too many shows on the stage clogging things up.:brick:
2. B B Boutique. Could have gone anywhere else.:hurl:
3. Cindy's Table - All character meals, all the time.:fork:

I'm not saying that it was never opened while I was there...just that I don't remember it being so. Now, my memory could be fuzzy, or it could be that the particular days that I was there, it was closed off everytime I went by, but opened on the days I wasn't there, or opened at other times during the day when I was elsewhere in the park. But I don't remember ever walking through the castle, and I'm sure we would have if the opportunity was there.

As far as your top three things wrong, I partially agree with the first one. But not because of too many shows. I just remember noticing, on previous trips, that I thought it looked pretty tacky always having all kinds of stage props up there even when there wasn't a show going on. Having the shows, per se, doesn't bother me. But when I walk by and there is no show, but a stage full of metal (lighting equipment, etc), then that doesn't do much good for the illusion.

I agree about BB Boutique. There wasn't much in that store that I could buy, or would want to buy, but it was nice to be able to go in there and look at the merchandise. They had some neat stuff in there. And I did buy a Christmas ornament in there in 2004. I don't know if it was "officially" a Christmas ornament, since there wasn't necessarily anything "Christmasy" about it. A bell with the Castle on top and Tinkerbell inside as the clapper, and it always has a place of honor on our tree every year. But especially with one BBB already in DTD, I think that is quite sufficient without having to get rid of a store with unique merchandise just to put another one in.

As far as Cinderella's Royal Table, I'll disagree there. I see nothing wrong with that restaraunt being there.

Interesting side note about the store that used to be in the Castle; apparently, it was still open in 2007 because I remember last year, on our 2008 trip, my wife and I were at the Art of Disney store at DTD and this CM came up and greeted me and shook my hand. I had no clue who he was nor why he acted like he knew me, but he said he remembered me from the year before and told me that he had worked in the store in the castle when we were there in 2007, and remembered talking to me there. Either he had me confused with someone else, or he just says that to all the guests in order to make them feel at home at WDW, or he just has one heck of a memory, because I can't imagine someone remembering little old me after a year with thousands of guests coming in and out everyday for the whole year in between.

It was indeed.
I especially liked Nathan's choice of outerwear. Coincidence? I think not!

Oh, I agree. That wasn't my point.
What I was getting at was the fact that since it became a set-menu character meal, it was no longer the wonderful, premier, flagship dining establishment that it once was.

But where's the new light pink color... oh wait skin... err or do you mean your signature, not the castle's colors? okay anyway

Anyone remember if that stage use to lower and raise? This would have been years ago like in the 80's - Kids in the Kingdom era. Trying to research it and I found the old tunnel map circulating around. There is a tunnel under the stage and if I'm reading this right the "Fire Prevention" room is located right under or very close to it.

BTW... when it comes to the pink, I like the old white better!

I noticed that too. I was at the park recently and it was open for people to pass through for about 20-30 minutes. The walk through the castle was one of my favorite things to do during my trips to disney and now you can't even enjoy it.

The other problem is what happens if you leave Cinderella's Royal Table and you are anywhere near the start of Wishes. We had reservations for around 5:00pm. Meal was great and the kids loved it. However, when we came out, both sides of the tunnel were roped off and we were told we couldn't leave until Wishes was over. About 1/2 and hour later we were finally allowed to leave. I get the safety aspect of it, but they probably should have placed the staging area for Wishes somewhere else.

While the courtyard behind the castle is directly within the fallout zone of the Fantasyland rooftop pyro, I always thought that there was access out the front of the Castle (perhaps by CM escort only) during Wishes.

When you look at aerial photos, the rope near the carousel that closes off the courtyard behind the castle is maybe 100' north of the "plane" of rooftop fireworks. (all of the launchers are virtually in a row) So if 100' is the safety buffer distance, going 100' south of that plane puts you at a point within the Castle.

There shouldn't be any reason that exiting out the front of the Castle would have been unsafe, unless there was special pyro on the castle. Were you there on a night where they were showing one of the special editions of the fireworks where perhaps there was pyro *on* the Castle itself? That may have changed the fallout close-off area a bit.

This past October was the first time in our last 5 trips we could not go through the Castle. I agree, 6 shows is too much.

Ponders....

You know in the summertime, quite often, 8 shows are done...

Hmm....

8 Shows of Dream Along With Mickey?

or...

8 Shows of Cinderellabration?

...as usual...bringing the devil's advocate side to life :)
