I'll go up to people and make it very clear that if they wanna smoke, they have to do it outside of the line and in the smoking area just across the pathway. If i get the "I'll put it out.." followed by no movement to do so, I'll give them my patented "Now or you'll regret it" look (see avatar). I once had a guy who blew his smoke at me after I told him to put it out and was trying to get in my face, but I simply closed the doors to the attraction in his face, then smiled and walked away. I think his wife gave him a swift jab in the ribs with her elbow.
The people who throw fits about smoking or act like idiots are the same ones who give you hell about bringing their drink inside the building. You spend most of your time ignoring them, and if they get to be too pushy or really think they'll open a door and let themselves in, you call security.
I try not to be overly pushy or go out of my way to "find smokers." If i see people exiting the ride in the crowd and they light up after being inside for 45 min, I understand they probably need a fix - and wont chase after them unless they linger in the main area. Most times, if they're smoking, they do stop walking or go off to the side, so i can direct them 6 more feet over to the smoking area.
Other CM's i know will be walking in another park and tell the person not to smoke in the main areas. I figure without a nametag, I have no power - and i'm not gonna try and get someone in trouble.
The newer "smoker trash cans" are nice. That way people don't have to guess where the smoking area is. I wish the two areas near me had them. I sometimes am like "Eww.. smoking area.." when I see and smell it, but I also appreciate that they're all congrigated there instead of just wandering around the park.
