Just saw on the local news that a cast member was found dead today after jumping off the Contemporary (!). I am not joking. I don't see anything on the web sites yet, though.

I hate to say this, but both are true. They recovered a body from the lagoon by the Grand Floridian today after searching for the person for about 24hrs... And then at approx 8pm, authorities believe a cast member took thier own life. Monorails were immediately shut down.

I do not have any more details than what I have said. I do ask however, that out of respect for the people, and thier families that we keep any discussion on a strictly factual matter, and refrain from gossiping or hearsay about it.

Well spoken. How terrible for those people.

OMG, that is so sad! :( I can't imagine what both families are going through.

About finding the suicide on the news sites, I hope they don't print that. It's such an extremely personal tragedy for the family of the person. I know up here they don't report on suicides unless it's REALLY newsworthy, like someone famous or they stopped the trains for hours during rush hour, etc. Although this person did pick a very public way to do it, so some one will exploit it. :(

Tragedy just begins to describe it. Tyler, thank you for shedding some light on the situation. I know WDW is usually tight-lipped about these things, but better to set the record straight then let rumors fly. My condolences to the friends and families of the victims.

Indeed, Disney does try to keep a tight lip on things. I haven't seen anything on the Cast Member death, and I hope not to. The only reason I posted what I knew on here was just as you said... to set the facts, and to avoid rumors and gossip and the like.

While at work today, I overheard a bunch of gossip, and a lot of thier facts were wrong... I don't think it's right that while two people lost thier life, these people were gossiping about it.

Whatever you saw was completely unrelated. They were probably conducting routine buisiness... perhaps someone dropped something into the lagoon? *shrug* The person was reported missing on Wednesday night, articles were found on Thursday, and a search commenced. The body was recovered on Friday.

In the news

I have not seen it on orlandosentinel.com, but the body found in the water near the Grand Floridian was reported, believe it or not, on our local 11 p.m. news here in Richmond, Virginia. And they actually got the names right (such as identifying the Seven Seas Lagoon).

But we did not hear about the suicide. I am really sorry to hear about that. The terrace off the 15th floor of the Contemporary is my favorite spot on Disney property. I hope that this doesn't cause them to close it, just because someone did something tragic like this...

But it is sad...

I found this on news.yahoo.com

Body Found In Disney Lagoon

An Orange County, Fla., sheriff's dive team searching a lagoon near a Disney World hotel Friday reportedly found the body of a missing man, according to Local 6 News.
Authorities said that the apparent victim and his wife were staying at the Grand Floridian Hotel in Disney World. Witnesses said that the pair were allegedly involved in an argument Wednesday night, Local 6 News reported.
The woman reportedly went to a room at another resort Wednesday without her husband after the alleged argument, according to authorities.
When the man did not return to the Grand Floridian Thursday night, the woman allegedly called the Orange County Sheriff's Office, according to the report.
When a deputy arrived at the Grand Floridian, Disney Security reportedly said that some personal items of the victim were found on the shore near the hotel.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office Dive Team has responded to an area near the Grand Floridian to conduct a search.

This was reported later that day.

Body Found In Pond At Disney World

A man who was reported missing at Walt Disney World was found on the bottom of a pond Friday.
His wife reported him missing to Orange County sheriff's deputies Thursday, after an argument at the Grand Floridian Resort, WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.
The woman apparently returned to her room at a different hotel, but when he failed to show up, she notified authorities, according to Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Solomons.
Disney security representatives reported some personal items of the victim may have been found on the shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon, located near the Grand Floridian Resort. The items were confirmed as those of the victim.
A bloodhound apparently led authorities to the body, Solomons said.

A bit more on the matter --- our local paper said that the man they found dead had previously been arguing with his wife. They are still unclear (or are not saying) if his death was accidental.

Ohh man. I was there all last week, and this is the first i've heard of both of these tragities. Disney certainly is good at keeping these types of things on the DL

What I can say is that, at least both deaths are not Disney's faults. It could be much worse if something happened due to a technical error, or to something precisely related in order to blame Disney for the fatalities. This are two casualties where Disney is just the name of the place were it happened, but definetely not the source.
