Cars grosses $62.8 million in opening weekend

It was the best remake of a movie I think I've ever seen, and I'm not even a car/racing lover. I guess I should explain that "remake" comment. The plot is "Doc Hollywood" from start to finish. I wonder if John Lassetter realized that while making it?
Don't get me wrong, though, it's a great film - wonderful characters, amazing animation, a truly hysterical credits scene - and I highly recommend it to everyone. It's not as if Disney hasn't lifted plots before. "Atlantis" comes immediately to mind. That was just a remake of "Stargate" with slightly different characters and settings. I'm kind of disappointed Pixar couldn't come up with a more original storyline in that sense, but considering all the really lame remakes that have appeared in the last few years, this is one that shows that sometimes a remake can be as good, or better, than the original (and I did like "Doc Hollywood" quite a bit).

The estimates always come out on Sunday and what is usually reported in the press on Monday. Official and final numbers don't come out until later Monday or early Tuesday. The estimates are usually fairly close to the final numbers.

Hmmm... I read somewhere (maybe it was here?) that in order for the movie to be considered a "success" it had to gross 80 mill for the opening weekend. Factoring in inflation and the like, that would put it at about the same level as the biggest Pixar releases.

Actually, it was Jim Hill, so it should be taken with a grain of salt... make that a salt lick. ( http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2006/06/05/2738.aspx )

According to an article on cnn, Disney is very happy with the figures. I'll see it when it comes out on DVD :D

I can't see how anyone could view almost 63 million dollars as a dissappointment. Monster's Inc was right around there, and Finding Nemo and the Incredibles weren't all that much more (around 70). That's assuming that you can measure the success of a movie by one number that comes out three days after it opens. If you really think about it, this number measures things like the studio's reputation, and promotional power. We shall see what the numbers are like in the coming weeks. I absolutely LOVED Cars. I am always thoroughly amazed and never disappointed with Pixar--they've done it again.

I wish I could have said that I helped to contribute to the $62.8 million gross, but I didn't have a chance to see it since I was working all weekend! But let me say that the Cars product was FLYING off the shelves at my Disney Store last night. One family bought nearly $400 worth of just Cars merchandise.

Seems like a sucess so far...
Can't wait to see it!

My wife took our younger son to see it for his birthday and she said it was fun, reminds you of when you were young when you played with cars giving them personalities, and the boys said it was great, then I have to yell at them to not tell me about it before I see it.:zipit:

Saw it on opening night with my family as we do with every animated disney movie. We loved it!!! We thought cars could have so much emotion. And James Taylor needs to be nominated for an oscar for "Our Town"!!! : )

Saw it Today ,it was very "Moving". Wished my father and younger brother saw it before they passed away.I just couldn't hold back the tears -while everyone was laughing - I was remembering the great road trips the family took years ago to Disney World.  :) :sohappy:

I hope Disney builds a nice "dark Ride " at the Studios for this one or Better Yet !- Test Track gets a new face lift with "CARS".:sohappy: :sohappy:

Its funny you mention the products selling so well. I work at Target and we have not been able to keep Cars toys, tshirts, etc. on the shelves for the last two weeks. We have these $30 talking Lightning McQueen cars that everyone wants. Its almost like Christmas again. Very weird. I think it has to do with the merchandise for this movie are actually able to "do" something. A Monsters Inc toy can only maybe say lines from the movie, etc. while the Cars toys can be remote control cars, model cars, etc.
