According to Jim Hill this morning, Cars is a flop because it only made 62 million and not 80.... Jim Hill needs a reality check.... he praised Over The Hedge but was no where to be found when that movie pulled in only 37 million its first weekend... But, he is right behind him computer bashing Cars for making only 62... He is pathetic...

The line for those who think 'Cars' is a flop is over there ---> near the sign for 'Heads Examined'. I think I see Jim over there, say 'Hi!' to him for us, I need to go see 'Cars' again.

I liked the comment on Jim's site that speculated that he had this article written days ago and simply filled in the numbers when they were released last night..

Cars was awesome. I saw it Friday and again on Sunday. I've even got the soundtrack.. the first CD I've bought in recent history. The animation was top notch and the story was endearing. Unbelievably, my fiancee said that she liked it better than Finding Nemo, her 'former' favorite movie. THAT'S impressive.

I don't really care what the box office numbers say, Cars is a success.

I say Cars is a success too. Anyone who thinks its a flop needs a reality check. Any animation studio would kill to have box office numbers like this. Besides, its not like its the lowet grossing Pixar film. Its the third highest and way above the rest. Besides, it made way more than Chicken Little's opening day ( which was a very, very crummy movie IMO ) and Over the Hedge.

The success is going to be based on how loveable the characters are, not $$'s. Nemo and Monster's Inc. have characters that are really loveable, but the Incredibles I don't think is quite the same loveability there. Cars seems to have good characters which is what is going to make the movie a success. I can't wait to see it.

I too think that it was a success, not every movie is going to break records. (I thought it would do a bit more though.) I do think that investors might look at the opening 3 days and think it should have done more and say it wasn’t a success. I think that’s crap, but that’s how things go. I think this movie will have some of the best merchandise sales in a long time for Disney. So that and I think this movie will have some staying power = SUCCESS!

You know what kinda bugs me....

It made 60.1...60.3 opening weekend or whatever and it's being considered a failure which reflects badly on Disney. I think it's just weird when a movie is consdiered mediocre when it makes slightly less than what it cost to make.

When compared to Chicken Little (whose opening weekend was 40 million)...it seems pretty successful to me. Will Cars be the film to retake the top grossing animated feature...probably not.

It was a really touching movie, especially during the credits and they ran the memorial for Joe Ranft (how sad). I really enjoyed the movie tho...wasn't about racing at all (which was fine with me). The characters were really enjoyable and to be honest, I liked it better than the Incredibles. I really enjoyed seeing how the animators worked with the movements of the cars. Reminds me of some old Disney animation concepts done for a car out of an old short that I saw somewhere online. Amazing stuff.

You're probably thinking of Disney's short "Suzie, the Little Blue Coupe." Lasseter even refers to it in one of the Making Of Cars shows on last week.

Wow, Cars has been doing fantastic during the week so far. Hopefully I'll have time to catch it next week, but I fully expect it to beat out Nacho Libre. Cars should clear $200 easily if this keeps up.
