In the first scene of the COP, Sarah (the mother) is ironing and on the her right (audience's left) is a little girl washing clothes, sitting down. Who is this, as I don't see her in any of the other scenes?! I know it isn't the daughter, as she appears in the same scene going out for Valentine's. Hopefully someone will know .... as this is a puzzling one for me.

maybe it was the little sister that they couldnt afford to pay her a speaking role so they just had her as a stand in.......... :p

I wonder if it's some girl next door helping Mother out. This girl has been around since the 1964 version and as far as I know has nevr been sourced or explained as she has never had a speaking roll.

Actually their son James/Jimmy didn't even have a name or a speaking roll..well he got a speaking roll finally in the 1975 version, but I don't think he had a name until the 1994 version. :hammer:

Originally in Act I for both the 1964 and 1967 version James was not talking, but using an air suction vaccum as Father was describing it to the audience.

She was like the youngest daughter on "Family Matters." She suddenly disappears, and as an audience member, we're just supposed to accept it and not question it.

I wonder if the animatronic also ended up in the adult film industry...

I love Family Matters! :D

Personally, I always assumed this little girl in the CoP was a neighbor who was there to help with the often laborious work of those times.

Great thread! :)

I've always believed her to be a younger daughter. But I've always wondered why she never appears in the final scene? (does she?)

The answer to her disappearance is quite simple. :) The mother speaks about how this "modern washday marvel" has reduced the washing to only 5 hours. :animwink:

As it turns out she was speaking of the girl and not the "washing machine".

In the next scene they have an electric washer. Therefore "the modern washday marvel" is no longer needed. :lookaroun
