Carousel of Progress closing to make room for a new "thrill ride"?

Didn't I read that the main actor from CoP died a few years back? So if you changed the last scene, you'd basically have to redo the entire soundtrack so the voice matched. Unless you could get an impersonator or something, I don't know...

It's just a voice actor.. they are replacable.

They didn't start all over when the original voices of any of the animated characters died... its basically the same thing. People 'perform' to sound like the original voice actor

SGE - More like an F ticket in my opinion.

Well, if the higher the letter, the better the thrill or attraction... You say "F" which in progression is better than "E" in the Disney Ticket scheme... so you must REALLY like Stitch. :p ;)

While Walt did not personally "make" Carousel of Progress, or any other attraction, his involvement with certain attractions was stronger than with others. For example, he did have a lot of input into the original Carousel of Progress, and drew up the original sketch for Tom Sawyer Island. Truth be told, he had nothing to do with most of the attractions at Disney World, as he had died before the Magic Kingdom was built. However, since COP was a transplant from California, his personal stamp is on that one...though it has been changed a few times since then.
If, however, you want to be more general about it, these are the attractions still at the Magic Kingdom that were "clones" of their Anaheim mother: Swiss Family Treehouse, The Jungle Cruise, The Tiki Room (in spirit only, as WDW's has been ruined), Pirates of the Caribbean (though he never saw Disneyland's open he had significant input), Tom Sawyer Island, Country Bear Jamboree (this could technically be considered a Walt Disney attraction, as it was one he was working on with Marc Davis for a ski resort right before his death), the original Diamond/Golden Horseshoe, The Hall of Presidents (though Disneyland only had the Lincoln portion a show similar to what is seen today was discussed), It's a Small World, Peter Pan's Flight, Dumbo, The Carousel, Snow White's Scary Adventures, the Railroad, the Monorail, COP, and generally speaking the Peoplemover (WDW uses a different operating system). Very few of these are exactly like the original in Disneyland...but then again, most of the attractions in Disneyland have been modified in some way, too. It all depends on how technical you want to get.

im sure someone has already posted something about this but i might have to corrections to this correction: 1, you missed HM, Walt deffinatley had great input on that. 2, didn't CoP originate at the 1964 New York's World Fair, not California.

btw hello im new.

Don't anyone EVER THINK of replacing COP! It's pratically the only ride left that Walt personally made!
many attractions are still there from him
IASM, Peter pan, jungle cruse, haunted mansion are all of his creations and they are still there. did walt make COP?

[back on topic] i would lve a new thrill ride at tommorowland, i don't think COP will be removed. i bet the theatre between COP and buzz lightyear will be removed, i mean they never use it, tear it down.
i will like a simulator there. sadly it will take a long time to tear down the theatre
{synopis} they might not tear down COP, maybe the theatre

.....and that would be incorrect. The "letter" has/had nothing to do with the quality of the thrill or attraction.

I was kidding... he obviously doesn't like SGE, hence the "F" rating, but in the ticket world the better attractions were the D/E ticket rides... it required too much explanation and I have failed at any type of humore hear... :hammer:

Aww...that was Jean Sheppard who wrote and narrated "A Christmas Story"..irreplaceable in my opinion...:(

Actually, I have seen CoP almost every year since it opened in 75 and it's still the first thing my kids ad I rush to do in the park. I think they should move it to the front of MK and make it a mandatory ride through...this way we'd show all the whiny bratty kids out there who "need" their computers, cell phones, LCD TVs and video games how things could have been for them had there been no progress.....and maybe they won't be so bratty in the park and bug their parents...or me...lol J/K

Anyway I LOVE CoP!

Walt didn't have great input on the HM. Those early films featuring Walt as the host showing a tour guild things that were planned for HM were just to get people excited. Walt let his imagineers basically play around and figure out what they wanted. Like all of the other projects, he was to have final approval for the HM but he died before that.

omg he died? That movie is a classic!

Fra-gi-le... Must be Italian!

Love that movie! I directed the stage version of it in 2002 and it was a huge success!

Yes. Father Jean Sheppard pased away in 1999. He is both the speaking and singing voice. Another very recognizable voice is the voice of Uncle Orville and Grandpa's parrot...Mel Blanc (passed away in 1989), best known for his Warner Bros. characters...such as Bugs Bunny (who, BTW is based on Oswald the Rabbit...Walt's first big animation success that was sold out from under him..to, I believe,...Warner Bros), Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam,and Barney Rubble (Ok so he used to be a Hanna Barbera character).

There are a few actors who are still living...sister Patricia is Debbi Derryberry, best known as "Jimmy Neutron", both brother voices (youth and teen), and Mother BJ Ward (original Velma in the Scooby Do cartoons in the 60s)

Gandmother in Act 4 is Janet Waldo (original Betty Rubble and Judy Jetson). Grandfather is Rex Allen (a singer ).

I would miss Jean Sheppard and Mel Blanc immensely if they changed the voices.

Do I know too much usless trivia about CoP? lol

BTW, Gringrinngghost is my son..he's a CoP geek too..lol

As mentioned by Raven, Walt had some input on Haunted Mansion, however, he died three years before Disneyland's opened. I believe that while the idea for the attraction had been green lit before he died (the mansion itself had been there since New Orleans Square had been built), it was still to be more of a walkthrough at that time. I left it out because his input, while important, did not ultimately end up being used as much as the ideas of Marc Davis, X. Atencio, Yale Gracey, and others.
As for Carousel of Progress, you're right - it did start out at the New York World's Fair, but then it went to Disneyland after that (as someone else mentioned earlier). It's a Small World, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the Grand Canyon Diorama all came from the World's Fair, too.

Thanks for the voice lists! So as far as I can tell, according to the voice list at horizons1.com...the only voice talent used in both CoP and Horizons was Dena Dietrich as the grandmother (1981-1994). Hm, I thought the grandfather was the same voice as well, at least in one version. In any case, that's kind of a cool little detail and reinforces the idea that Horizons is a sequel to CoP and the family is supposed to be the same.

Just a few days ago when I was at the Grand Floridian a cast member named Witt said that they'd move the CoP to Washington DC and build an Incredibles ride in it's place. If they got rid of CoP, Tomorrowland would be Advertise-Our-Movies-Land. ;]

Where in Washington D.C. would they put it? The Smithsonian?
