Carousel of Progress closing to make room for a new "thrill ride"?

If you got rid of CoP, Stitch, Buzz, and the Laugh Floor, you'd have the Speedway, TTA, and Space. Some land.

I LOVE CoP, and would be heartbroken to see it go. Although, I am close to heartbroken to see how run down it's becoming. I can see the wisdom in either closing it now gracefully or giving it the TLC it so desperately needs.

The idea of moving it to Epcot makes sense. I could see it fitting in there, but I too cannot see them invensting that kind of money into the ride.

The idea of making/moving it to a museum is great! If there was some way they could set up the scenes as stationary, possibly keep the dialogue... like a walking tour.

Someone brought up Jungle Cruise as being a little past it's prime: I agree. I can go see real animals on Kilimanjaro. I feel like that ride is really only there for the sentimental/historical purpose and for the corny jokes. Aren't there enough corny jokes across the way at the new Tiki Room?

I have to agree with getting rid of Speedway. Way too much prime property in the world's #1 park for a cheesy go-cart ride that has nothing to do with "tomorrow." Speedway and track is put to shame even by the cheesy budget tourist strip go-kart tracks all over the country which offer better cars and a guide-free track. It takes away from the retro-fantasy futuristic theming by having loud and smelly go carts.

CoP isn't cutting edge, but it can be improved a great deal and it holds a lot of historical value to what Walt's planning and his imagineers have done, plus the catchy theme song which he loved. I.E. it contains a lot of content. But, I would be all for a museum.

And how...I'd be happy with another crappy playground better than that eyesore, LOL.

I guess before real-go-kart places and video games it was a big deal for some little kids, but even my local crappy amusement park (sub-Six Flags even) has one just as good. The noise is just not fun there.

I heard that rumor last year also. When I spoke to a person from WDI Creative, they were "thinking" of putting in the new Incredibles ride in the COP/Galaxy Theater area. but also that is, if MK was willing to pay for it.

Indy is poorly themed, but I don't think that means it should go. Little kids love being able to drive their own cars. This is just a simple issue of the ride needing a much more futuristic retheming. I am pretty sure we will still drive in the future--the Imagineers just need a good budget to get in there and create a real E-Ticket. I'd be happy with Autopia, even.

I think that CoP should always be in a park. I think that Epcot would be a great place for it, with a MAJOR reworking. I remember seeing CoP in DL as a child and going up the escalator after the "60's" scene and looking at the "future city of tomorrow" ( AKA EPCOT [ now seen on TTA]). If they move it, it should be restored and expanded. They could return the escalator and make it a two story building with a "double ring" of seats and return the 60's, go upstars and show the "80's" on the second floor with the "2000's" (the other turn of the century), and the "2020's" (a look at the future). Or, since they have got the "moving audience" down to a science now (Energy, GMR), they could reconfigure the whole attraction into a new state-of-the-art pavilion of "technology in the home, through the ages". Get the people who sponsor the "Home of the Future" in Innoventions to sponsor the attraction.
This is the one ride that Walt wanted to always keep open. We should respect his wishes and then "plus it".

The rumor I have heard that has been around for a while is that the Carousel of Progress could be replaced by an updated UFO ride themed to the Little Green Men of Toy Story, complete with "The Claw" looming above trying to snatch you.

There is also a Disney Urban Myth that Walt Disney said on his death bed that he never wanted to see the Carousel of Progress go, and it should always remain as long as the parks remain. Since Disneyland's Carousel of Progress is gone, the only remaining one is at the Magic Kingdom and would therefore have to remain if the Urban Myth was indeed true.
Once again. There has always only been 1 Carousel of Progress. There have never been any clones of it. In Florida we have the original CoP cast and stages, they were moved from the world's fair to Disneyland for six years. Then to Florida and reopened at WDW in 1975. The only thing that has been cloned is the rotating theaters. Once more There Has Always Been Only One Carousel Of Progress.

Anything is possible...but not one person has ever produced even the slightest bit of evidence that Walt ever said anything of the sort about CoP.
In fact, it kinda goes against Walt's well documented wishes for the parks to change and evolve.
99.999999% probability it was originated by a CoP fan who was desperate to create an argument for keeping it open.

Lee, correct me if I am wrong, but really, Walt didnt have time to make a whole lot of requests. Everything I have seen and/or read indicates that Walt was not even aware he was as sick as he was (lung cancer) until right before he passed away. For the most part he was still working on plans for the new park while in the hospital which would not have allowed time for sorrowful requests for what happens after he died.

There isn't a lot of room for a large E-ticket in that area.

Not to mention that both MGM and DAK - and even Epcot to an extent - can use a new E-ticket more than MK does.

You mean those parks that have gotten new rides and attractions in the last 25 years? MK hasn't had a major E-ticket since 1992? The closest being Buzz in 1998? In that time frame all three other parks have gotten major attractions

Isnt SGE considered an E Ticket?

Whatever....:lookaroun No matter how it got there, the only Carousel of Progress in the world is in WDW, which was my point.

Walt did request a lot in his final days.(mostly the future of WDW and the EPCOT area). He did nothing but envisioning his dream, like creating mental pictures of what EPCOT would be like. And I believe Walt did have a real fondness for CoP.

This may be just a story spun by fans. Maybe keeping CoP is just a secret that no one really knows about.

But I think it reflects another mystery about an infamous man such as Walt Disney.

It would be great to see it completely restored with original scenes (bring back the 60's) and mechanically updated. ... Bill it as Walt's '64 World Fair classic.

... I remember seeing CoP in DL as a child and going up the escalator after the "60's" scene and looking at the "future city of tomorrow" ( AKA EPCOT [ now seen on TTA]). ...They could return the escalator and make it a two story building with a "double ring" of seats and return the 60's, go upstars and show the "80's" on the second floor with the "2000's" (the other turn of the century), and the "2020's" (a look at the future). ...

For a long time now, I have thought that they should restore the last scene to the original version, whether they move it or not, and whether they add to it or not.

The reason everyone is always complaining it is outdated is because of the new last scene that is hard to keep updated. Restoring the last scene to its original would eliminate that problem, as the entire show would now be historical.

However, if they wanted to add to it, all they would really have to do is restore the original last scene, and then have a post-show, where the exiting audience would pass through a room that had an animatronics display similar to the last scene now (only constantly updated - unlike what they do with the present arrangement). The audience would stand through this last scene; that would cut down on cost. Heck, they could do a modest version of that at the present location.

But restoring the last scene to its original version is key.

If they did that, though, I think that a post-show would be a good idea, even if it were a static display of technology in the home from 1960s to present.

Didn't I read that the main actor from CoP died a few years back? So if you changed the last scene, you'd basically have to redo the entire soundtrack so the voice matched. Unless you could get an impersonator or something, I don't know...

CoP is one of my favorite rides in WDW, yet even I can see it needs serious help. I'll ride it as long as it's open, and if it went to Epcot or a museum I'd still ride it. But...

What people forget is that the attractions in WDW were created to inspire and amaze. Audio-Animatronics like the Hall of Presidents and CoP were very innovative and dramatic when they were introduced. Think about that. The Hall of Presidents had people gasping and open-mouthed.

Today, we've all seen Audio-Animatronics, but we can still be amazed and/or inspired by how they are used. The Yeti is a good example... I recently rode EE for the first time, and he just blew me away!

I'm sure Walt wouldn't be happy seeing the CoP rotating 1/4 full and see the people come out yawning. I'd love to see them take the basic concept and start over with the most modern, innovative technology. You had CoP in the 60s, Horizons in the 80s, and a new ride in the 00's, all designed to inspire and amaze based on Walt's original vision of "progress".

I am fine as long as they don't demolish the ride, but move it somewhere else or perserve it for future generations to enjoy. I don't care if something else goes into that prime real estate.

I would think that if you are going to keep COP you need to start addressing the "progress" part. Either plan to do major work every 5 or so years or move onto something else. I do like the ride but in its current shape something major needs to get done. If they did take it down in favor of a new ride I wouldnt mind as long as its a ride and not a show.

I've really liked CoP since the first time I saw it '80. Now my kids have seen it a few times too, and they all seem to like different aspects of it, especially that dog. But of course it just can't be compared to other attractions such as SM, SM, or BTRR, or most rides for that matter. I think that the best way to preserve it would be to make it the pre-show for another attraction, so instead of standing a queue for 30 - 45 minutes, the last 10 minutes before the new E-ticket ride woul be the CoP. I wish that they could have done a similar thing by making the World of Motion the pre-show for Test Track. OK, I know that wouldn't work becuse it is the same building, but you get the idea.
