Captain America 4

I understood him to be saying that the character is only Captain America because of the particular time and context in which he came into being, not because there is anything specifically American about him (I know nothing about Marvel lore, so I could be garbling this totally). I don't think he was suggesting that anyone actually wants to rebrand the character or sees anything wrong with his being American. (Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you.)
I was being sarcastic. Apparently not succeeding.

Simple. I will NEVER apologize for, or feel guilty for, being American. Seems too many others do/are.
Take that as you will. I’m out.
So you were implicitly criticising Mackie.

For what it's worth, I (as a non-American) did not take what he said to be an expression of apology or guilt for being American. I really think people need to take a step back and think through his actual words and intent before jumping to such conclusions. We're far too ready to assume the worst of each other these days, and it isn't productive.
