Canadians & the 100 Years of Magic Pins?

Some of you may know that the Disney Stores have been selling a special pin series during the past 4 months. I was lucky in that I was able to collect most of them. The Disney Club internet site has been running a contest in which the grand prize is the complete set (153) of pins. I looked at the official rules today and noticed a strange condition to wit: "A Canadian resident will be required to answer correctly a mathematical skills test to be eligible to collect the prize." What??? Can anyone tell me what this means? Why would a person from Canada have to pass a math quiz to collect the prize? I don't understand. See below:

Walt Disney's 100 Years of Dreams Pin Series Sweepstakes

6. WINNER: Will be notified by U.S. Mail on or about December 28, 2001. All responsibilities of a minor will be assumed by parent/legal guardian. Disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner will result from any of the following: (1) failure of a potential winner to execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability/Publicity Release and W-9 within fourteen (14) days from the date of notification, (2) the return of any notification or the prize as undeliverable, or (3) any other non-compliance with rules and conditions. A Canadian resident will be required to answer correctly a mathematical skills test to be eligible to collect the prize. All taxes are solely the winner's responsibility. For name of winner (after December 28, 2001) and/or sweepstakes rules, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Walt Disney's 100 Years of Dreams Pin Series Sweepstakes, P. O. Box 4489, Anaheim, California 92803-4489.

James, I'm not sure, but my guess would be that Canada has requirements for lotteries or sweepstakes, and this may be a way of meeting the legal requirements for the promotion. You may have to actually do something to win--not have it based purely on luck or something.

Perhaps someone else knows better...

In Canada in order to win a prize you must answer a skill-testing question which is just a simple math question like (3*4 - 4) / 2, this is pretty much standard. All sweepstakes must include it. I don't know the exact rule, but everytime I put my name in for something, I have to put the answer on the ballet.

I think mighty is on the right track. If you must exhibit some sort of skill, no matter how basic, I think the contest is not "technically" considered gambling, which is illegal (except for the government sponsored gambling, and on site betting at racetracks, and perhaps some other exceptions...I'm not up on Canadian law)

BTW, Hi Melissa! I miss Toronto (but not the weather) We lived there about 20 years ago for a year...on St Charles St East...in the Bay/Bloor/Yonge St. area.

:) The weather this year has been quite mild... we just got our first snow two days ago and what we just got it melting quickly

I really like Toronto! I studied English there for a summer and had been to the "East Wonders" in Canada for vacation too. You were very well located there Marcia! Believe it or not, I loved getting on the metro, and enjoyed watching the people who got on and off on "Rosedale" station ;)

I lived with a family near Jane station in an old but pretty and nice house from the 1920´s.

If you really like people watching you have to come down to Queen St W. (were I live), there is plenty of cafes to sit and watch, plus it is only 5 minutes away from the The Lion King.

plus were did you study (I go to U of Toronto)

I like Toronto too.....now which cafe should I meetcha at?

By the way.....the mathematical question is simple...

Take 100 pins.....add 50 state pins.....and come up with 153 total pins....

I wish I had gone to Uof T! I studied at an English school that was on the third floor af a building... I can´t remember the name right now... it was 10 years ago! It was very well located thoug... But I do know where Queens St.W is! (I think.... let me get my metro map!)

I liked watching the people from Rosedale b/c they were the elegant and fancy ones... I wonder how it must be during the winter!

I also like that the people are very quiet and corteus there. Even at the Skydome! It´s a big metropolis but still a nice, quiet and CLEAN city....at least, what I saw! :sohappy:

Math is not my strong suit!

For Tramp, the reason the Disney 100 Years of Magic pins total 153 is as follows:

99 pins in the that were sold at all Disney stores.
47 pins representing the US States that have Disney stores (North Dakota, Vermont & Wyoming were not included).
6 pins representing Canadian Provinces that have Disney Stores.
1 pin for Puerto Rico because of their Disney Store(s).

All of the 99 pins were sold (7 or 8 in a set) each Saturday (starting 9/22/01 and ending 12/15/01) and could only be purchased from a Disney store. A different set came out each week. On average, the pins sold for $4.00 a piece and some were produced in very short supply. The last week (12/15/01) 7 regular pins came out in the set with the addition of 1 "state or province" pin. The kicker was that each Disney store only sold the pin from the state or province in which it was located. Therefore, if you bought pins in Minnesota you could only get the Minnesota pin. That made it tough to collect the entire set. On average, if you purchased a 100 pin set (99 pins plus your state pin) you ended up spending about $440 or $450 depending on sales tax. However a complete 100 pin set can command up to $1,500 now and the price in climbing every day. I have also seen 1 complete 153 pin set sell for $4,800! I only got involved in the whole thing because my daughter collects the pins. Neither she nor I am interested in selling any of the pins. Personally, I'm a little upset with the Disney company over this whole pin business. To purchase the last several weeks issues of these pins, I've stood in line with my daughter at my local Disney store for up to 3 hours prior to the store opening. With the exception of my daughter, all of the other folks in line were adults. And the lines were long. By the time the store opened, 60 to 70 people were in line! I hear that in some parts of the country, people camped out in front of malls so they could be the first in line at the Disney store to buy these pins. The problem is that some pins were limited in production and only 4 or 6 were sent out to some Disney stores. You can just imagine how fun it is when 50 people line up for hours to buy something and then they find out that only the first 4 customers can buy that item! I didn't see any fights, but I did see a lot of rude behavior. Well, I've gone on too much about this subject and I apologize.

Jimmy....

If you aren't Canadian.....you're disqualified from answering the question....

actually.....I was very well aware of the formula for reaching 153 pins having stood in the same line up until a couple of weeks ago when I screwed up my back....but I managed to go yesterday at 5:30 AM with my daughter to get the last pins....the Store opened at 7am .....and we were about 10th in line with the other a ssholes.....

I too have some real problems with the way Disney handled these pins....shorting many stores each week with certain pins...or not sending other pins at all...

the first week was total chaos when Disney had NO limit....so of course the first fat a s s e s into the store grabbed all the #1 pins and sold them on ebay for $100....Disney has their head up their holes with these pins...just my humble opinion.

we have the complete 100 set...and if i knew where i could sell it for 4,800 dollars, I'd do it in a heartbeat....then wait a month or two and buy a complete set for less than the $4.00 per pin.....just like I did the Millennium set, having paid $300 for the whole set.

I like your humor.

Tramp, thanks for the reply and I'm sorry to hear that you injured your back. I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery! Also glad to hear that you have a good sense of humor about Disney pin collecting and other Disney stuff. After this pin collecting episode I told my daughter, "We really don't want to do this again." and I explained to her the many reasons. To me, Disney is all about make believe and just plain fun. I saw some evil in this Disney pin fiasco and I didn't like it one bit. My daughter just wanted the pins for the joy of having the little tokens as reminders of the wonderful accomplishments created by Walt Disney and I supported her in that quest. Little did I know that it was going to turn into a bunch of money grubbing folks whose only interest in the collection was to run up the price! This Disney pin collecting has gone crazy. As an example, our family was visiting WDW on 09/14/01.....that's is of course right after the horrific terrorist attacks on this country. My daughter was wearing a Mickey Mouse pin with the USA flag design. My wife and I looked around the various shops and resorts in the hope that we too could find the same pin so that we could join our daughter in a symbol of our patriotism. Well, we found 1 of those pins on our first day to WDW and my wife wore it. After that those pins were sold out! Of course now Disney pin makers have gone into high gear and you could choke a whale with those things, but back to WDW. Over the next several days at WDW, both my wife and daughter were offered money ($40 in one case), CM pins (it is my understanding that CM pins are NOT to be traded to the public) and even free merchandise for their pins. We thought it all very crass. However, while standing in line at Peter Pan and going back and forth through the several switchbacks, a young boy kept admiring my daughters pin at every turn in the line. He asked if he could touch it and he said, "that is just beautiful". That's all it took. My daughter took off the pin and gave it to the young boy. That made my Disney day.

James, that is such a sweet story. :) Did you get a replacement of the mickey head flag pin?

And I think the rule is CM pins are not to be SOLD to the public, but traded is fair game. :) '

Of course, we have some pin regulars here who will weigh in momentarily, of course....

Good night, all... I'm up way past my bedtime (again).

I think the Disney Stores are flooded with those pins now....

During the 12 weeks or so that it took to collect all 100 pins, I had that hole plugged in my head so I was out of commission for several weeks.....but if I had the choice of having someone probe around inside my head again or stand in friggin line for an hour and a half waiting for the Disney Store to open, guess which I would pick? This gives new meaning to 'having your head examined.'

G'nite duckie.....it was nice of you to pass thru and wave hello to all your EX-friends....:animwink:

Pin Replacement

Yes Ms. mightyduck we did get a new pin for our daughter. As Tramp correctly pointed out, the stores are now flooded with these pins and many other USA flag design pins. We just got one last Saturday at the Disney store that has the Mickey head with a "multi-image" flag that "moves" as the light reflects off of it. I don't know the technical term for this process, perhaps Now, Inc. knows the real name. Anyway, it's a nice pin and my daughter likes it very much. I'm proud of her, she's a good child.

Thanks

"LENTICULAR"

Yeah, I'm one of those guys that likes to know how things work. So, I guess they use a double-convex lens to create the movement. Thanks for the information.

The rule is that CMs are not supposed to trade CM pins while on duty. Anyone else, including CMs that are off the clock, can trade whatever they want. Also, nobody is supposed to be allowed to sell pins (other than Disney) a guest caught doing so can be removed from the park and if they are a pass holder (such as a seasonal or annual pass holder) they can loose their pass if they get caught doing this. I have actually witnessed this last one in person.
