Canadian Lumberjack Show to open at Epcot's Canada Pavilion in early October

Good find, but how many Canadians know this, or think of it as Canadian?

As far as Celtic music, very east coast and many Canadians would identify it as such. I guess it doesn't really matter in the long run. It's really hard to find entertainment that represents Canada.

Maybe move Cirque from Dtd to here ;)
I doubt Barenaked Ladies are that busy these days ;)

I don't mean to suggest that it is 100% guaranteed that Paul Bunyan was a Canadian based folk tale. But, the origin of folk tales are not cut and dry. He was based in logging country. Many articles point to a potential source as French-Canada.

Many point to Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, and any number of other places. There are no fewer than 6 places in the US where you can go see large statues of Paul in towns that claim his "birth".

All that aside, I doubt Disney put a second of thought into this fact when they booked the lumberjack act. They likely went "We want lumberjacks, oohhhh, look, there's an outfit local! I wonder how cheap they would work!"
Sure, and we can go back and forth on 'origin', but my friend...Paul Bunyan IS American in every sense of the word...c'mon. Anyway, lets move on shall we...:)

I've never thought so much about Paul Bunyan. I found this piece - http://www.mainewriter.com/articles/Paul-Bunyan.htm ....

Anyway, I think of lumberjacking as Canadian. I mean Monty Python does start the famous "I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK" with -

"I wanted to be... a lumberjack!

Leaping from tree to tree, as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia."

I think the big problem here is that no matter what replaced Off Kilter was going to have issues. Without doing any research at all except for reading these here magical blue boards for years and talking to 80 bajillion different vacationers in WDW, I'd have to say this is the most popular entertainment offering in WS. So, following Off Kilter was always going to be rough.

At least following all the entertainment cuts, this is at least something. Anyone managed to slip in a Monty Python reference yet?

I am sure my 5 y/o son will really like hearing chain saws and loud wood chopping at WDW. What a miss this will be...Who gets paid big money to determine what type of entertainment our families like to see?

It was also stated in the article that they have worked with Disney on private events in the past. Lumberjacks and Paul Bunyan are as much Canadian as they are American.

I could at least see the point of bringing Cirque over, that makes sense. I still would have been sad but at least a quality act would be taking over. This?? I dunno. Marie

Cirque is Canadian but it does not represent Canada, I would say they represent the evolution of street acrobats than anything else.

I'd like to point out that the original entertainment idea for the Canada pavilion when it was being built was to have a lumberjack show. The Canadian government cut this idea (according to Wiki and Theme Park Insider for sources) because they thought it would reinforce negative stereotypes that Canada was just full of lumberjacks, so they withheld funding until it was switched up.
I guess these days they don't care (or Canada no longers provides funding or input), or these days would be more worried about another stereotype (hockey players?).

At least Cirque is authentically an act that did originate in Canada. It does have a great diversity in it's artists ethnicities similar to what I have been told about the cultural diversity in Canada. Again at least this would be understandable. I just don't think this new lumberjack act is impressive enough to fill the shoes (or kilts) of Off Kilter, sorry. Marie

How about not replacing Off Kilter at all.

How about replacing something when it gets old, stale and is not enjoyed by guests. Off Kilter never seemed to get old. The show was good and always seemed way too short. Most nights it was impossible to get through the promenade when they were playing with people watching the show.

Ok, the lumberjack show could be interesting, but for how long? Off Kilter could and did mix it up all the time by playing different music whether it was tradition Celtic or switch into rock or even blast out a few Metallica tunes. I hope this works out.

If something really needs to be replaced in Epcot then look @ Imagination or even more Captain EO!

Marie, did you hear if the band wanted to re-up their contract or did they want to retire from the Epcot gig?
