It's not as bad as you would think, mostly just bruises and such, though I've seen some broken arms too.
In American football or hockey, where the players wear tons of equipment, there seems to be a fearlessness to play as players tend to be more careless about what they do because they know they won't really get hurt and won't really hurt a player on the opposing team. In rugby, no player's have any protective equipment, save for the occassional player who uses headgear, and thus the focus is more on the tackle than on reckless plays that may injure a player. Rugby players know that if they do something to purposely injure someone, they have no protection themselves and thus may be taken out in the same way.
