Can APs be used as room keys?

On our next trip, we decided not to do the MYW room & ticket package with dining plan. Instead, we decided to get APs to use for our next two annual trips and get a TiW card for dining. So the downside of that is that it seems we will have alot more cards to keep track of. When it was just my wife, my son and I, we had a total of 3 cards. Next year, we will be taking our daughter, but she will be young enough to get into the parks free.

If I'm counting correctly, we will have a total of 6 cards to keep track of:

3 Annual Passes
2 Room Key Cards (I don't imagine my 5 year old son has any need for his own room key card LOL)
1 Table in Wonderland Card

Rather than have to keep track of all those cards, is it possible to encode the room key part onto our APs, thus eliminating two of the cards?

I don't think it's possible either. And you'll probably need to keep your son's card on you, as well, in case you plan to utilize EMH, so that brings your count up to seven.

It is not possible.

I keep track of the same deck of cards for 5 people and it is not that hard. Let everyone hold onto a room key and keep your AP's and TiWL in the ticket sleeve they provide. If you want to cut down on the thickness have them give you a standard ticket sleeve that does not have the AP benefits pages in it. Hand everyone their AP before you hit the turnstiles and have them give them back once you are through.

I don't think it is possible, either. We are APholders and have TiW as well. I have a special wallet that I use on WDW trips.... it's my "Disney Wallet" (it's a velcro wallet with a key ring that has the Disney Princesses on it). It holds all of our cards (AP, TiW, room keys, etc.), and I usually put any credit/debit card(s) I plan to use as well as cash and both of our Driver's licenses. This is what gets taken to the parks and I usually leave my regular wallet in the hotel room.

Oh ya, I forgot about that. I didn't figure he would have any reason to be out by himself and need his own room key, but I forgot about needing one for evening EMH.

I've never asked, but I assume you can not.

My AP's are pieces of cardstock type paper, so they wouldn't really work as room keys anyway. I do know they offer plastic AP's though, but maybe you have to ask for those? We just took what they gave us at the entrance to MK.

When I'm by myself with my kids, I have to keep everything as simple as possible. I keep all 3 AP's, a credit card, and one room key in my clear plastic pin lanyard holder thingy (is that clear as day? The ones they sell at all the pin stores? To clip at the bottom of your pin lanyard? I don't even collect pins. :)) and I have no problems. I even keep all of our Fastpasses in there too. I was also able to enter morning EMH with just one room key - I guess they assumed I wouldn't just pick up 2 random kids to take to EMH with me that morning. :D

Haha, that's awesome...I have my own "vacation wallet" as well. Basically a regular wallet, but it has a chain on it, so I can attach it to my belt loop. That way, I don't have to worry about pickpockets, or it working its way out of my back pocket somehow and getting lost with all our spending cash, credit card, driver's license and park tickets. But with those extra cards plus our cash and everything, it might overstuff the wallet and make it harder to close, and uncomfortable to sit on it. But I like the idea that one of the other posters had, about using some sleeve that they give you at check in. I don't recall ever getting that, but maybe I just didn't feel the need to use it before, and set it aside and forgot about it.

They are not available at WDW.

Ahhhhh! Good info!

The only way I even knew they existed was when I uploaded my AP to my online WDW account - they had a picture of a plastic AP. I wondered at that time why ours were paper. Now I know! Thanks!

The plastic AP might have been the voucher that you would purchase from the Disney store. That voucher would be exchanged for the actual Mylar/card stock pass.

The plastic AP's are not available at any of the park ticket windows, you will be given a paper ticket.

You can take the paper ticket to the ticket desk at any Disney resort (you don't have to be a guest at that resort) and ask them to transfer it to a plastic card. Your AP will still need to be a seperate card from your KTTW card, but they will transfer it to plastic.

Whenever we have purchased the AP vouchers through AAA we were given a very nice plastic card. Which we then unfortunately had to exchange for the paper real thing....

Something else you could buy is a watertight card holder that goes around your neck. My wife and I each use one- one for the AP/KTTW/TiW cards, another for credit cards/IDs and an insurance card.....

It can be done, and I have seen it with my own eyes. There is a catch, you have to be staying Concierge level at deluxe resort. The concierge in the concierge lounge is able to put AP on your key to the world card.

That's the one thing that bugs me about the Orlando parks in general, none of them offer hard cards for APs/season passes. I have been known to accidentally wash my wallet, and even their super paper doesn't hold up to a typical wash cycle very well. It doesn't even have to be the super thick, personalized plastic, either. But oh well, so goes the Orlando AP scene, I guess.

Ironically water can kill the magnetic strip on room key quite quickly. A couple of years ago I jumped in the pool with my room key and my AP in my pocket. The AP worked fine for the rest of the year and the room key was toast.

That's crazy! Never would have thought that.

Neither would I. I had no idea that 10 seconds worth of water could kill a plastic key card like that.

Well When I was at the poly early June I bought me and my girlfriend the seasonals, but I got them on the plastic kttw card so it would be a lot more durable. I've had my card in my wallet for the entire summer and the block out dates are ending at the end of the week. I hope it's still ok. It has to be better than carrying around paper. We both went through atleast 10 copies of the paper annuals last year! Lol. So, so far it better.

I have had 5 APs in my wallet for about 8 years now. Never had one go bad. Key cards die on us all the time.
