I recognise the painting, but I know absolutely nothing about art, so I'll not lower the tone of your thread.

I have no idea and am too brain dead at this hour to interprept it. It does remind me of the old days; I used to see things like that especially when we would skip school and hang out listening to White Rabbit, by Jefferson Airplane, and do other things:zipit:

If you look at and beyond the context of the painting, you will see that Van Gogh is using a form of Impressionism that is very bold, defined, and literally brush strokes at a time. This is meant to convey one thing: the mood and atmosphere of the scene that is the subject of the painting - a small valley village. Van Gogh does not want to bore you with realistic details or even pointilism. He does not want to produce a photgraph of the moment - because a pohotgraph, or a realism paining, focuses only on the town itself. Van Gogh's Impressionism is meant to convey the mood of the town - not the town itself. Hence forth, you shall see bold colors and large, dominant shapes and patterns...

Hope that helps...

It probably doesn't :lookaroun

but, SirNimajneb, the great thing about art is that there is no correct or incorrect interpretation. :sohappy: See, I actually see a more religious viewpoint in the painting. You can see that the stars have halos very similar to the halos that we often see in depictions of angels. So, perhaps he is suggesting that the stars are heavenly and angelic?? I also see that he made a huge emphasis on the wind. There are many references in the Bible that the Holy Spirit (one of the trinity of the Godhead) moves like the wind. So, perhaps he's symbolizing that?? Also, the last thing I note is that in the little sleepy town, the church seems to be the most prominate building. You can see the steeple rising above everything else. Also, at this time period, Van Gogh was nearing the end of his life, so was it possible that he was contimplating more of the "heavenly things?" ?? See, that's the amazing thing about art. Each man interprets it due to his own experiences. This painting can mean so many things to so many different people and hence affect them in many different ways. I LOVE IT!!! Hee hee, sorry, i had to get that out of my system... :p

Brilliant analysis...

And interpretation...

I have offered a purely artistical view on the piece, explaining what it is meant to do. In reading your reply, you have illustrated what is actually happening. My comments were the way in which Van Gogh would go to illustrate deeper, subliminal messages, like the ones you have described...

I have never thought of Starry Night in a religious sense...

Until now...

I'm an art student....and if there is one thing I can't stand it's when people make more of a peice of work than it is. That is all college art professors do....I really can't stand it.

To me art is seeing not saying....as far as visual art goes that is. I'm pretty damn good at what I do with art. But still I find BSing about the meaning or even structure i.e. composition...a waste of time. Look at it with your eyes and let your brain do the rest not your mouth.

I don't mean to be ofensive...

My art teachers tell me that that is my weakness...I don't talk during critiques. It's not because I can't but because I choose not too. My work speaks for it self.

I just had to say something along those lines. Go ahead and "BS" about the painting lol. I just find it pointless.... and not to mention extremely fake.

Go ahead flame on lol... :D

No, no.. You are quite right... DisJosh

Visual art should be just that... visual.

Just like most everything else in the world, once you transfer something from one place to another, it loses some of its clarity...

The same happens with the brain and the mouth (or in this case, the fingers:animwink: )

The brain should interpret and analyze vis. arts in its own supreme language of imagination, sights, sounds, and colors, and beyond.

The brain's response is output...

The art itself is the input...

Silent but oh so powerful...

It just bothers me when people try to make a peice of work more than something that is just meant to be visual. Espescially when it's my own work. I don't analyze when I do my work...I do my work from instinct 99.9% of the time.

I mean sure you can look at a peice of art and see or feel something other than the artist intended but if someone does that with one of my paintings I feel like I've failed. lol It's just eye candy. I'm a very shallow person....and so is my art work.( not visually shallow lol)

Bah all I meant by posting any of this is that chit chating about art is not my thing. I just like making it.

So I guess I shouldn't have even posted in the first place lol.

But dadisneynutter did invite "all art lovers" so it's his fault I showed up! :p

I'm the same way - when I do art, it is purely for form, contrast, and to be "eye candy" like OOP!

I don't try to add hidden meaning, etc...

I think many artists are like that - they do their work and upon completion and observation, they'll say,"Hmm... that connotes a very ___________ theme," etc.

Just weighing in...

Again.

It's good to know there are others that aproach their work in a similar way.

I get so much crap about it from one professor in particular and it is affecting my grade. Oh well I'm stubourn. I'm not about to change something that insignifigant to me. The only one it's bothering is him and I think it's pretty amusing. :D

Van Gogh actually wrote about his paintings A LOT, especially in letters to his brother Theo. So the meaning and intent of most of Van Gogh's painting have been documented. Starry Night is about the end of the world according to Van Gogh himself. :)

I guess I'm just different than you, DisJosh. Well, I can't paint or draw. I mean, if you saw me paint something, you might be offended or something... On the other hand, I practice art in the form of writing. I write music, poetry, stories. And yes, alot of my stuff has much meaning. I tie all of it into my life, as crooked and messed up and aweful as it is. Therefore, I let it all out on a piece of paper. What I do isn't shallow or meaningless, it's a part of me and who I am.

OK here goes many people thought that Van Gogh suffered from mental illness more specifically Schizophrenia. Man people have done research into the disease and believe that he painted that was because that is what he actually saw. If you look at some of his other art the wavy lines are a reoccurring pattern.
What’s the lesson here don't analyze every thing in life.

but we don't really know that. Just like I don't know if he intended to put religious connotations into ANY of his artwork. Maybe it was that disease I can't spell ( ) or maybe it was just the way he expressed himself. I don't think we can ever really know that minds of others. I can't judge who you are just like you can't judge who I or what I intend in what I do. It's all in the mind of the Maker
