^Ah...what I wouldn't give to be working again.

Seriously, President's Weekend may be crowded, but that is more crowded than I remember it being last year.

I just wish all the "doom and gloomers" who predicted empty parks and rotating park closures would explain how they got it so completely wrong.

Spring break is starting and then the summer crowds. I don't think WDW has slow times anymore.

Stop putting words in people's mouths. Nobody here or anywhere predicted that there would be rolling park closures. You know the story. Stop making up hog slop.

Wow, the numbers I see and hear for most of the weekdays during the last 2 weeks in January and 2 weeks in February sure make it seem like the parks are hurting.

5 months ago, Kevin Yee posted an article outlining a Disney Contingency plan for decreased attendance, one which included ultimately rolling park closures. http://miceage.micechat.com/kevinyee/ky061008a.htm

He was pretty much lambasted on all fronts both on his home forum and here http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthrea...ight=Kevin+Yee .

I'm wondering, does the idea seem so far-fetched now? How many of us would rather see this than the across the board entertainment/dining/quality cuts we're seeing now? If this is an actual contingency plan, at what stage are we now in relation to the level that would prompt this?

I don't know if it will happen, but it seems a lot more realistic now than it did 5 months ago.

I understand your point, but it has been suggested and to say that it wasn't is semantics.

I was referring to your post more than the other, though, but I understand your point.

It is somewhere between jt04 and Yee, I'm sure.

They may be doing better than they thought, but I think that the long term still has a degree of uncertainty that Disney is not willing to bet on.

From between Super Bowl weekend and Presidents Day weekend Orlando experienced some of its lowest park attendance EVER (relative to having seven theme parks at least). Since then not so much. Combine the one-two punch of Daytona 500 and Presidents Day weekend and you have a very healthy holiday event season. A lot of New England schools are on winter break this week as well. Everyone is seeing business tick up a bit right now.

Spring Break should be sufficiently busy. The past couple of years day to day park numbers have been higher than the summer season even though Spring Break doesn't last for nearly as long.

After Spring Break there a lot of questions that need answering. If trends hold May is going to be one hell of a time to visit Orlando if you don't want to bump into any people in the parks...

WDW, Disneyland and WDI started 2 weeks of major lay-offs today. In the coming weeks hundreds of people will lose their jobs. I think the "doom and gloomers," as they are being called, may have gotten it right.

The parks are busy because discount packages are being offered. Since discount packages are being offered, guest spending is way down. Corporate Disney has decided to choose lower guest spening over lower attendance, because it might soften the blow--profit wise, and because it looks better to have a busy park. Make no mistake about it, Disney is hurting financially even if the parks have guests in them.

If those guests are speing 10% less (for example) than the guests who came this time last year, Disney is making 10% less revenue. Considering all of the fixed costs associated with running WDW, 10% less revenue translates to significantly lower profit.

Disney is in bad shape. Today, many long-time salaried Cast Members were escorted from their desks by security after being told they were laid off. Gloom and Doom is right.

I was at MK Wednesday (just got home a few hours ago) to celebrate Love's birthday. I was really surprised at how crowded it was for a Wednesday afternoon. We left just before the 9pm Wishes showing (Love's gotta go to work in the morning) so we avoided the heavy exit crowds. But it was busy. And we went to World of Disney in Downtown Disney to pick up a monorail with Love's Bday Fun Card (the only place that had them in stock) and the store was PACKED with people.

It just seems like it's been solid crowds every time we've been the last few months. Busy in early December, busy in mid December, busy in January when we normally expect it to be slow and busy the 8th and the 18th of February. It's just...weird.

Shrewd management or a chance to be cheap under the camouflage of the economy. take your pick.

Not to be adversarial or side with the pessimists, but...
It is president's week when most of the schools in America are closed. Traditionally a very, very busy time @WDW so you'd really expect there to be crowds.

What schools in the US are closed during "presidents week"? In Georgia, my child was not even off for the day!!

I'm going during to WDW this year during Spring Break (and have never been before) and expect it to be crowded beyond belief. I'm not worried, would rather be at a busy park than back in the world behind my desk!!

I disagree with your logic, it goes against human nature.

"Look, I can go for 7 nights for the same price as 4 nights, lets do it!" - thereby adding 3 days worth of meals and other purchases that wouldn't normally be there

"Wow, with this Buy 4 Get 3 Free Deal, for the same amount of money that I was spending for 7 nights at a value resort, I can now upgrade to a moderate resort" - guest is spending the same amount of money and getting more value, are now exposed to a higher level of resort, and may return there in the future instead of a value....

"Hey, look, we saved $300 with that 7 for 4 deal, lets splurge and treat ourselves to a character breakfast or two."

It is the rare individual or family that pockets the money they save from a discount package.

Presisdents week is not a good week to apply the fact that Disney's attendance is up and doing well. This is one of the busiest weeks of the year just like Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These times are always busy during good eceonomy or bad. It is during the intermediate times where just 5% decline (which is hardly noticeable by a guest) adds up to a reduction in profits. When overhead remains the same and income is reduced that 5% then cuts will have to be made.

Below was cut from the google article:
Parks and resorts revenue fell 4 percent during the period to $2.67 billion as attendance at the company's U.S. theme parks and hotel occupancy at its domestic resorts declined. The company said it saw a 5 percent dip in quarterly attendance at its U.S. Walt Disney World and Disneyland parks.

Last year WDW saw 46,990,000 guests through the turnstiles at its 4 major parks. If you take away that 5% that is a loss of 2,349,500 guests. That is pretty substantial and this may only be the begining. Take this with advanced booking way down and we may have not even scratched the surface. WDC's domestic parks could well see a 15% decline in 09' attendance. Lets hope not.
