Bus driver avoided disaster

Today on the first trip from TTC to Hollywood Studios my Bus stopped suddenly enough that I was tossed into the lady two seats over and two little kids got tossed around. Everyone was OK, and the bus driver pulled over by the service center to check out one of the kids who hit the floor. A guy at the back who saw it all said that a car had approached a stop sign like he wasn't going to stop. The bus driver began to brake, the car slowed down some, then blew through the stop sign and the bus driver jammed the brakes stopping just short of the car saving a bad accident.

I have always liked Disney Bus drivers, now more than ever.:sohappy::sohappy:

Ran into the same problem coming from EPCOT after EMH in an overloaded bus; a pickup ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed. The driver was very adept at evasive maneuvers and received a big round of applause. :king:

Gee, what is going on with the bad drivers at Disney? Thank goodness the bus driver was paying attention to what was going on around him. I'm sure they see all kinds of crazy things.

When we are there and driving around we always take it easy, mainly to take it all in and make sure we don't miss a turn but there have been two fatal accidents there in the past few months. Are people just not paying attention? I also don't remember seeing police cars there. Do they have Disney police to monitor everyone?

We're not going to make that turn!

Yes we will!

No, it's too sharp, we're gonna flip.

You're right, we're not gonna make that turn.

Ok, everybody listen up...I need everybody on this side of the bus...

This is why I love using Disney transportation. I let the bus drivers, boat captains and monorail pilots get me around safely. Nothing could mess up a vacation more than getting crashed into while driving your rental car.

These are public roads, not Disney owned, that just happen to cut thru WDW. People are racing to & from work, coming home after a night out, tourists unfamiliar with the roads, etc. The local police (not sure which agency ) patrol those roads, but we have seen police cars out time & time again.

They aren't all public roads. Several of them are roads specifically under the jurisdiction of the RCID. Regardless, most of the traffic on the internal roads ("inside" Disney property) are people visiting or affiliated with WDW.
If I remember correctly, OCSD patrols as requested by WDW - there was a big to-do (last year ?) about Disney requesting a large number of additional full-time enforcement on-property.

I have never been on an internal WDW road where people were traveling fast enough to cause these types of problems. The incident I posted about earlier was not a WDW road...but then again, maybe we've been lucky enough to avoid those ...less than perfect...drivers who manage to screw everything up.

The same thing happened to us on our trip in 2007. We were taking a bus from the Yacht Club to the Magic Kingdom to transfer to a launch to catch Hoop Dee Doo at Fort Wilderness. I was sitting very near the front of the bus and I was watching out the front window.

As our bus was traveling north on World Dr. getting close to the MK I could see the road up ahead. There was a line of traffic crossing the road in front of us, barely stopping at the posted stop sign. As our bus got closer to the intersection (we're weren't supposed to stop) I was counting the cars rolling through the stop sign. I had an uneasy feeling that there was going to be an incident judging by the aggressiveness of the drivers of those cars, it was like they were all on their way to a fire or something. Just as our bus entered the intersection an idiot in a red car blew the stop sign and crossed directly in front of us, I call the guy an idiot because anyone smart driving a compact car would never play chicken with a bus bearing down on them going 40 miles an hour. Our bus driver must have anticipated this happening because he had slowed down a bit before. Our driver slammed on the brakes hard, all the passengers were shoved forward. Luckily there wasn't anyone standing at the time our bus wasn't too full.

A couple of small children, including a baby rolled off their parents lap and fell to the floor of the bus. One lady banged her head on a steel rail attached to her seat. She had been dozing off at the time, she said later.
Luckily we avoided a collision and the red car sped off and never stopped, the angle of my line of sight was poor and I was unable to get a plate number of the car.

Our bus driver continued on he asked if everyone was ok, some people said yes some said no, kids were crying, the bus driver looked shaken up. The bus driver called in the incident on his radio, by this time we were turning into the MK bus area. Instead of parking at the YC/BC slot we continued on to a more deserted area and parked. Several Disney management and security types swarmed our bus. As the bus driver was being debriefed security people were going to each passenger asking how they were. My family and I were fine, as were most everyone on the bus. Only the lady who bumped her head wasn't doing so good, but she turned out to fine as well.

I was able to speak with the bus driver a little, a young guy in his 20's. he said he was new, and had been driving the bus for less than 6 months. He was worried about getting fired. I told him I saw the whole thing as it happened and there was nothing more he could have done, it would be BS to get fired for something that wasn't his fault. Yeah, a few passengers got knocked around a bit but nothing serious, he avoided a collision, which I assumed wasn't easy to do, handling a big machine like that.

Someone, I assume was the bus drivers supervisor overheard our conversation and asked me if I would fill out an incident report giving my account of what I saw. I was at first worried about making it on time to our dinner show reservations, but we still had time, so I abliged.

I gave them my personal information, cell phone, address and such and I told the driver in front of his boss that I appreciated all that he did.

A different manager offered to drive us in her car to Fort Wilderness, but I declined and said we would be happy to take the launch. So she at least escorted us to the gangway. She gave our kids some stickers and we were off.

Both Orange/Osceola County Sheriff's Office and FHP have jurisdiction. (Orange in Orange, Osceola in Osceola, etc)

When i worked at Disney I was on cast member bus to go to MK, we were in a backstage area and came to an intersection where we had no stop sign but the other directions did.

A small car went through the stop sign without even slowing down and slammed into the side of the bus. Honestly it was a minor bump and I thought we ran up over the curb until the bus driver stopped and ran off the bus.

The front end of the car was totaled and we couldn't see anyone in the car...there were only a couple of us on the bus and we all got off to see if we could help.

We found a girl crumpled under the steering wheel. There was no way she had a seatbelt on. She was concious and talking and kept saying she was on her way to work. One girl recognized her costume as a main street vendor and while the driver contact an ambulance, she called MK CM services and told them about the accident.

I checked in with another vendor at MK a few weeks later and was told the girl was OK but had been in the hospital for a few days.

She was a lucky girl...it could have been much worse
