I am building in WV. There aren't any issues here. I am building on some family property that spans about 110 acres. What issues would you have where you are at?

I live in Connecticut. The building process is somewhat draconian here. Before you start, you must appear before, and get approvals from a Planning and Zoning Commission, an Inland Wetlands Commission (even if you're nowhere near the water), the building department, health department and depending upon where it is, the historical commission. Then you have to get permits from various town agencies before you can even put a shovel in the ground. If at any point someone doesn't like your plans, (or they simply have a knot in their shorts), they can send you back to the drawing board.
It often takes up to a year just to get all the approvals to build. Then there are periodic inspections during the build by all these agencies (at their leisure, of course).

As an example, friends of ours that were building a fairly simple house had to have all their plans redone and the site re-surveyed because the height of the two-story house was going to exceed the zoning rules by about 24 inches. They had to move the house back on the lot in order to comply, which then threw off the septic system plan, well location, driveway cut, etc. It set them back nearly a year.

Not old, just vintage.

Sounds like we live in the same town. Good friends of mine tried to build a house here and encountered pretty much everything you mentioned. The historical commission was the worst. They threw a fit over window style, color of the bricks, location of the chimney, and roofing material. My friends eventually gave up and just gutted an existing house in town and didn't have nearly as much trouble.

To the OP, you are lucky you are able to build your dream home in a place where you can do pretty much anything. I can't wait to see pics of the construction progress. Of course we will require a grand tour of the premises once it is completed and decorated.
