Broken light bulb watch

When I spend top dollar, I expect a top-class product. If I spent $40,000 on a new car, it better be a damn good car. So, if I'm spending thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation and am grossly-overpaying for room, food, and park admission, I should expect that everything be in the best shape it could be. That means that parks are clean and maintained.

If you were a hosting your family for a birthday at your house, what kind of shape would you have your house in? Would you have burnt out lightbulbs in your lamps and lights? Chipped paint in the rooms? If we are guests like Disney insists we are, don't we deserve to be treated like such? Indeed, I am on vacation and I am paying a lot of money to be at WDW. Thus, I think it's fair for me to expect the parks in good shape, because it is entirely within Disney's ability for there not to be burnt out light bulbs or chipped paint or dirty sidewalks.

If you spend 5k on a vacation, why do you actually care about a few burned out light bulbs? Wouldn't you be more inclined to actually experience what the parks have to offer, or try to get your moneys worth of entertainment than scrounge around the park looking for burned out light bulbs, chipped paint of dirty sidewalks?

When I visit, I really don't care about such meaningless stuff, Iam more worried about having a good time.

But then again, thats just me.

Jimmy Thick- Contradicting myself...

Pfft, hardly.

I have never been in a situation where there were so many "burned" out light bulbs that it was so dark you could not see. In fact, I would love to see this personally, but it will NEVER happen.

But I have been in a situation where I broke someone nose due to the fact they were not watching where they were going. People not paying attention is more of a problem that will effect you than burned out light bulbs.

People who actually visit Disney World know to which Iam writing about.

If you go to Disney World and spend top dollar, why on earth are you worried about broken or burned out light bulbs?

1-Your on vacation.

2-The burned out bulbs have nothing to do with your enjoyment, as I have never seem them close down parks due to broken light bulbs.

3-Your on vacation.

4-Can you not find anything to do with your time thats just a little bit more valuable?

5-Did I mention your on vacation?

I think people should spend more time being aware of their surrounding than worrying about burned out light bulbs.

Heck, even the pink neon and screen lights in Cranium Command are still on!

That would be the overhead lights in the room behind the screen, not the screen lighting itself. The neon is barely on due to static electricity still reaching the line.

who is supposed to put in the work orders?

Operations management that care enought to notice a bulb is out. If they don't report it, it doesn't get changed. Too bad they just don't go around doing it themselves but that's not how most maintenence systems work.

Hello contradiction.

You answered your own question ... Why should you spend top dollar and get garbage liked chipped paint, overflowing trash, burnt bulbs, broken effects and dirty streets?

I spend top dollar on a vacation so I don't have to look at things like that.

Um, why would you even care about those things when you should be getting your monies worth? Why would you even let it bother you?

If you feel the need to waste time going out of your way to look for chipped paint, heh, overflowing trash ( Never seen THAT personally ), burnt bulbs. broken effects and dirty streets, then chances are you have no clue what a VACATION is all about.

I don't let those things bother me, Iam trying to have a good time.

Because I am spending the money on what is a 'premium' product, at a place that prides itself on customer service and customer satisfaction, or they did at one time.

Disney prided itself on the details, from the big ones to the little ones. They set the bar, not me, I am only holding them to there own standards.

If you are happy spending 5K or more on a vacation and getting a product that is average, but not above the average, then I question your financial prowess.

I care about the lightbulbs because I am spending thousands of dollars to be at WDW and I deserve a bit better than to see the parks in a shape like that. It's insulting to have bad maintenance in a theme park when you're spending a small fortune to be there.

If I really did have to go out of my way to find stuff to complain about, I wouldn't be in this thread, would I? These things are obvious to anyone who sees them. You don't always have to look for bad maintenance to see it.

How about this burst rainspout outside of the Mad Tea Party?

5822611031_06f61e82b5.jpg

Or the chipped paint in the queue of Peter Pan's Flight? (Seen by thousands of guests each day.)

5823174140_5fd23802e2.jpg

Or the rusted-out smokestack of the Liberty Belle riverboat?

These aren't out-of-the-way locales. I stumbled across these in plain sight on my last WDW visit in August 2010.

They still do, its still a "premium" product and they still offer excellent customer service, and compared to other vacation destinations, they are still above and beyond better than everyone else. If a burnt out blub offend you so much, simply stop going, it might make you happier.

Now how does a burnt out light bulb affect people vacation experience?

Disney prided itself on the details, from the big ones to the little ones. They set the bar, not me, I am only holding them to there own standards.

The details are still fantastic, I don't tend to notice simple things to complain about because Iam having a good time. If you spent some time trying to have a good time, you would still see how high Disney has kept the bar they set.

Seeing some chipped paint, does that completely ruin a vacation?

If you are happy spending 5K or more on a vacation and getting a product that is average, but not above the average, then I question your financial prowess.

I don't go to Disney World looking for minute details to complain about, I go there to spend time with my family, go on some rides and eat good food, with spending time with my family the most important part. Disney World is a world in itself and away from the real one enough that I can be a kid again and just relax. Maybe if others had the same realm of thought, there would not be people complaining about, well really nothing.

Should I ask for a refund if that didn't power wash a inch of sidewalk?

And did this ruin your vacation? Did anyone else throw up their hands in disgust and demand their money back? Or is it something to complain about for the sake of complaining?

I have to side with Mr. Thick on this one. Life is far too short to gripe about things like this. Now, if I had seen Cinderella shouting obscenities and racial slurs while in a drunken stupor, THAT would be worth griping about. Otherwise, don't sweat the small stuff. We're all here temporarily anyway.

The issue here is that they are charging more every year, and the overall quality of maintenance seems to be getting worse every year. As the guest, people are allowed to criticize WHATEVER they want and should not have to stand for being told to shut up and "enjoy themselves". That's stifling to free speech and only plays into corporate pockets. Especially since this is more than just broken lightbulbs, it can be anything that down-scales the experience. This also includes chipped paint everywhere, or broken effects/figures on rides, or trash scattered around. Or heck, even the closing or ruining of rides because they didn't perform proper maintenance when they had the chance.

It's also generally not just a single thing that makes the experience degrade. It's a multitude of things, all working together to make the experience a good deal less magical and more half-assed. A person might not notice a single bulb burned out if they didn't pay attention. But i think most everyone would notice if half or more of them were out. You'd probably be a bit irked, especially if this wasn't the only thing in need of help. Disney would gladly do anything they could to cut corners if they were allowed to and people just kept quiet. They're a corporation after profit first and foremost. If everyone really WAS happy with more than half the lightbulbs on Main Street burned out, most of the animatronics on the rides stationary, and other random things not working everywhere, Disney would just keep things broken and never fix a thing. This is happening right now and most people don't even care.

For all the money people spend lining the pockets of the Disney corporates, they should expect and receive the best experience possible. That's not a personal entitlement, i include EVERYONE in this statement. We've already seen what the indifferent attitude breeds, with all the maintenance issues and broken effects on rides. Given time, it will only get worse if people allow it to continue without speaking out. If Disney thought everyone thought everyone shared Jimmy Thick's ideals, they'd ruin the place. They're already gradually adapting people into not noticing cutbacks, while still charging people more than ever for the experience. If they do this gradually enough, and people still pay without complaining, they'll easily get by with this.

So after that wall of text, the real question is- how much would you actually take before it gets so cheaply maintained that it's impossible to enjoy yourself due to the distractions? The more people that just sit back and take it, the worse it's going to get. Attacking other people for complaining just feeds their greed and will make it worse and worse.

Should note that it doesn't ruin my vacation to see this stuff. It IS there and should indeed be talked about to give Disney a kick in the rear and get their act in gear. It's especially bad when i count the fact that i have only recently visited the park after having not gone since the mid-90's. Having not gone for so long really makes it all the more obvious all the stuff they've cut back on. While the frequent park goer may not have noticed the downgrades in maintenance due to how they've been introduced to them gradually, someone who hasn't had this done to them gradually (myself) can really see the effects clearly. Feel free to call me a whining complainer, but i'm just saying guests should have standards that were once in place. Especially since not caring will only make it worse.

While there are some good laughs in this thread, what concerns me after seeing those photos is not so much that something needs to be repaired, but that the next logical thought to a future park guest now should be: "how well are they maintaining the function and safety of the rides, if the exterior parts of the park and attractions are left in a state of disrepair?

So, you like to brag about breaking people's noses and how it is their fault???

If I were ever in a situation where I had been part of something that caused another as much pain as a broken nose, I would be ashamed and feel nothing but apologetic towards the person.

Instead, it is a situation where you put others down due to an accident.

Is it fun being a bully?

You are clearly self important with your "I am the undisputed champion" posts.

Maintenence at the parks has been slipping. Now you want to bully others for noticing? This is not a new topic.

I really miss Roy's savedisney.com website for items like this. The photo essays on that site were legendary. They detailed items just like this. A series of burned out light bulbs that hadn't been fixed for weeks. And it wasn't from idiot guests. It was a site from the "idiot nephew." He understood that there was no excuse for these kinds of problems and DL stand today as a higher quality standard today because of it.

WDW, not so much.

Could this be easily fixed? With 1-2 extra roaming workers a day at each park, yes.
