Bridge to No Where?

Is there any excitement for the Bridge to Teribithia (sp?).

My kids really like the preview and want to see it. Looks a bit Narnia-ish as far as special effects go.

The special effects look out of control.

I read that book when I was a kid and I definately do not remember reading any of the stuff that is in the previews.

Both my girls are looking forward to seeing it and one is 18 and the other 12, they each read the book in Middle School and loved the story.

How old are your kids, maybe they would want to read the book first, its not that big.

There's one major problem though. Its opening in Fubruary. Movies that open in February are usually sent there to die. Movies do horrible then.

The girls are 8 and 11. Sarah, the 11 year old is just finishing the Potter books and wants to read this one. I am pushing Watership Down to her. One of my favorites growing up and one I would love to see made into a movie with current effects.

The book is very sad towards the end. However, when I read it, I nevered remembered there being all the things shown in the previews either. I guess it is because it is a rather small book and they needed to add in some scenes so that the movie will be a good length and so that it will keep kids interested!

Let her read Bridge, don't push Watership though thats a sure way of turning her off.

Both of my girls started Watership, but didn't care for it. They didn't like the Narnia books either, but have both finished the Potter books a few times.

If people want to see a movie, they'll go regardless of what the calendar says. I don't think anybody is going to get worked up over a trailer and then go "crap...it's February. Well, so much for that."

Passion of the Christ? Hannibal? Hitch? Daredevil? 50 First Dates? Scream 3? Madea's Family Reunion/Diary of a Mad Black Woman? Constantine? February is not a dumping ground like January and September.

That being said, unless BV steps up the marketing I think this could have some trouble.

Haha.

Most of those are some pretty bad films. None of them have any franchise behind them (Scream 3... That's just part of a franchise). Madea/Diary made good profits, but cost nothing to make.

The Passion of the Christ can't be compared to this Disney release. Roughly $40 mil came from Mel Gibson; he paid for both production and advertising. No major studio would support it, thus he chose to open it during a "down time." But not just any downtime... it opened on ASH WEDNESDAY!

Anyway... I totally agree with Kyle. I don't see much commercial/franchise hope for this film. I study the entertainment industry. I can assure you that Feb. is where mediocre romantic comedies thrive, not epic studio films... and it doesn't take a film BA to know that.

...however, this summer's box office will have the toughest competition in years. Perhaps Disney is smarter than we think and they have a franchise on their hands afterall. :)

That's not necessarily true. Some movies do well in the slower months.

Daredevil broke records for that month, which I liked, and Ghost Rider is coming out in Feb. which I am looking foward to seeing.

As for Teribithia, I have not heard of the book, but that won't really matter. I never heard of Chronicles of Narnia either and really enjoyed that movie.

I am looking foward to seeing Teribithia. :)

I did find it strange that I never even heard any rumors of this film before I saw the previews for it a few weeks ago.

But I think Disney is trying to feel this one out.

Scar Junior is right, being that this summer is going to be HUGEwhat with:

Spider-man 3, Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Ratatouille, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix all opening up within a few weeks of each other (I heard that they were rereleasing all the Star Wars movies in 3-D for the 30th Anniversary this summer too, anyone else hear that too?) :)

I've heard the Star Wars rumor as well, but beyond that I don't know anything. This summer is gonna be fun for me..I'll see most of the movies mentioned and then I'll see the Bourne Supremacy (sp?) and I think Aliens vs. Predator 2 comes out in August as well.

As for Terebithia...I'll be passing on it. I wasn't fond of Narnia and Terebithia doesn't even remotely interest me. Narnia and Terebithia are way too close (style wise and scope wise) to Lord of the Rings. They are shot the same way as well, that was actually the first thing I noticed about the Narnia trailer...it felt too much like a LOTR rehash. I did eventually see it at a discount theatre and wasn't that impressed. It was kinda interesting, but the parts I enjoyed the most involved the beavers.

I say bring on "Star Wars 3D"....what else does a summer need? Oh, that's right....I forgot about "Empire Strikes Back 3D". Nothing else matters. I do know that they are working on turning all the Star Wars's into 3D, just not sure when they were planning on releasing them. This summer would be nice though....

Isn't the movie you are talking about called the Bourne Ultimatum?

Hopefully Star Wars will come out in 3D, :D but maybe it isn't being advertised like a normal movie because maybe they'll only release it in IMAX theaters (just a thought.) :)

Although the spring time is generally not known for its big box office I would have to disagree with your statement. Movies that open in February aren't sent there to die but I would say quite the opposite they are sent there to hopefully thrive or atleast survive. Some movies open in February because its a less competitive time of year which makes it easier for films to find audiences. Movies that are good will find an audience anytime of the year, but movies that are less good will be more likely to find an audience when there is less competition. An average movie that does well at the box office will look more like a big hit in the spring, then an average movie that opens during the summer and does the same amount of business.

In regards to this particular movie, I think it might do better during late summer or the holiday season since it seems to be going for more of a young adult audience. I too read this book when I was younger and also saw a tv movie version of it. The only part of the book I remember is how it ends, I won't ruin the ending here for anyone who hasn't read it, but it is not very kid friendly. If the movie does not change the ending of the book, I'm guessing there may be a few unhappy parents who take their kids to this movie thinking its going to be all fantasy and Narnia like, when instead it may be more "Terms of Endearment" for children.

The thing about February is that its not a popular movie going season. People would rather stay home in their warm houses than brave the cold weather to go out and do something. Not to mention that its a time when most people are working or at school. There are a few exceptions to movies opening in February ( like the ones NemoRocks mentioned ) but for the most part, February is just not a very good movie going month.

Whoops...sorry....Bourne Ultimatum...that's what I get for watching Bourne Supremacy the before making that last post....ugh.

I've been trying to think of really good movies that I've seen in Febuary....I can't recall though. I can tell you though that I'm willing to go to the movies any day of the week and any month of the year. I love movies, they are a bit expensive sometimes, but I've discovered a discount theatre with weekday admission at $1.50 and weekends at $2. The local Loews/AMC theatre has lowered it's prices to $6 for Sun-Thurs and then $8 for Fri and Sat.

Note: I do not pay for outrageously priced concessions....I kinda smuggle in my own. Which reminds me...I went to this discount theatre this one time and was sitting there watching the movie when I started to smell Fried Chicken. Don't ask me how the lady got hot fried chicken into this place (they do not serve that type of food there), but apparently none of the employees could smell the chicken as she walked in...which was something I noticed as soon as she sat down. HAHA....it stills makes me chuckle when I think about it.
