Breaking: Star Wars Ep VII Release Date Out

Exactly. It's not good. But it's Oscar-worthy compared to Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. I managed to sit through it and enjoy it at the theater. Some of the continuity issued annoyed me, but I put them out of my head. I watched it a second time on video and that was enough. No need to ever watch it again as I fear I would be openly laughing at it if I ever tried.

At best, look for an Easter egg thrown in here or there. The EU has always been an alternate universe and not a true extension of the movie canon. The movies will contradict it whenever they chose. It's not a consideration.

Exactly.

Lucas is in the spot where Roddenberry used to be for Star Trek. His name will be on all the Star Wars movies with some kind of producer or consultant credit until he dies. He can offer his opinion and maybe they will take it. But no one is under any obligation to listen to him any more. Hopefully, based on his post Jedi track record, no one takes his opinion too seriously.
Correction: Lucas did write the stories. He wrote them as outlines during the 70's and first bragged about having twelve stories, then changed his mind and consolidated it to nine, then he started saying there were never nine and always six, but then Bob Iger had lunch with him and begged him to allow him to read the story treatments for 7, 8, and 9. Hoping to use this as an opportunity to sell his company and retire, he hired Kathleen Kennedy as President and Michael Arndt to further develop the the stories. Once he completed the refined treatments for the trilogy, he was asked to write the screenplay for eps. 1. When Iger reviewed Lucas' original work, he lit up and loved it. Seeing Arndt refining that work clinched the deal and the rest is history. This is the Cliff Notes version of the story of what happened, by the way.

Dude, that's a fantasy.

He had some incredibly sketchy outline where Han Solo was an alien and Luke's last name was Starkiller. Vader wasn't even Luke's dad in those early outlines.

There have been a bunch of drafts and reworks. There's volumes and volumes of nonsense. But Lucas doesn't have some grand mapped-out strategy for the series. Heck, he completely reworked Revenge of the Sith during editing because he changed his mind about why Anakin turned to the Dark Side after filming was completed.

The Secret History of Star Wars is essential reading if you are interested in how Star Wars evolved. For all of George's boasting about having planned out an epic story in the seventies, it's truly frightening how little was actually thought out in advance. One of the reasons the prequels are so awful is that he was basically winging it. He said his approach was inspired by jazz, but really he was just too lazy to write the scripts in advance.

Join me, together we can rule the galaxy.
And think about all the toys that will be rolled out for Christmas 2015!

Kidding aside, looking forward to seeing what J.J. Abrams brings to the franchise and especially after his work on the Star Trek movies.

Interesting timing. It says to me that they want to sell toys before anyone actually sees it (which sends up all kinds of red flags).

I would think, if they think is going to a big hit with families, that they'd want it out there well before the Christmas season so little Jimmy would be asking for Star Wars toys under the tree. Putting it out the week of Christmas tells me they don't think kids are going to be too excited by it once they see it. Scary.

The toys and advertisements will hit store shelves and televisions long before the movie does. EP I, II, III had toys rollouts with midnight parties and more at least a month before the movies hit theaters.

Yep, its going to be a merchandise juggernaut irrespective of the release date.

It's the official company line. Which should be your first clue that it's utter horse e.

No, not really.

Again, you wanted attention and you now have it.

I'm not the one posting movie news in the parks news section because it is more heavily trafficked. Not to mention the fact there was already another thread in this section about the Star Wars release date when you posted yours.

For what it's worth, I wasn't seeking attention at all. Just pointing out a violation of the forum rules. The mods don't seem to care when Star Wars is concerned. So I guess I don't either.

Oh hmmm. Looks like I'm not the only one who has played forum cop:

If only there was a Chit-Chat section... beyond News & Rumors and this one specific thread.... Hmmmm....

Guess it's only cool when you do it.

It is a good strategy though. I always try and make my trip reports their own sub-forum.

Plus you have the defense of "Screw off " at the ready should someone ever think to question your thread placement. It's fool proof!

Yep. When I was a grocery stock boy I would put the raw hamburger in with the bread, stick bags of charcoal in the freezers, and jars of peanut butter would festoon the produce section. Any attempt by customers or management to correct was met with a forceful "Screw Off!" It was a beautiful strategy.

I assume you naturally followed it with accusations of being starved for attention. Here you are minding your own business festooning peanut butter (we as a society do not use the word "festoon" nearly enough, btw) and these dare I say Trolls come along and make a spectacle about it. I'm glad you handled this situation appropriately.

Did you actually even read the post?! I'll try to put it in simple terms for you (since you didn't understand the first time).

If they put out the movie at the end of November, and it duds or children don't like it, then sales die for Christmas (and it's a likelyhood that parents return the merch before Christmas). By putting it out the week of Christmas, they get all of the "hype" buying (that you're referring to) and it's too close to Christmas for the negative backlash to have an effect.

If they truly thought this thing would have merchandising "legs", they'd more than likely put it out a few weeks earlier to maximize a Christmas buying frenzy. The late release date sends up red flags that they're expecting a major drop off in sales after the movie is actually released.

This is very much like what happened with Episode 1 when merch was in high demand until the movie came out and then dropped off drastically after people actually saw the flaming dung heap. The late release date shows that Disney might not have much faith in what they've seen so far.

Chill out lebeau. I'd rather see this thread here in the WDW News section than read about the 200th "update" with very little updated on the SWMT, finding out that the bathrooms in Tomorrowland are getting their toilet seat bumpers replaced on December 10th, or hearing "insiders" tell us that projects have been killed that are going on in full-force behind the scenes (or that half of a park may or may not be getting demolished in 2027 to make room for a new addition that may or may not be coming).

So lebeau can relax,
How about that release date? Think it'll have an effect on merchandise in the parks? Do you think TDO will plan any kind of special events around the parks for it?

There. All better now? OP, feel free to copy those questions into your original post (sarcastically, of course).
