Does anyone know if the principle people working on Eps. 7 are well-versed with the Extended Universe. If so, I would expect the films to at least make a partial attempt to be faithful and not step all over it with conflicting story lines.

If not, I would expect the new trilogy to make the Extended Universe turn into an Alternative Universe.

Theres no way they could do a Studios makeover in 15 months; assuming they decided to start October 1, 2014. Not the way we want it.

I feel your pain. What I meant was if the principle people working on the new movies haven't read the Zahn trilogy and all the stuff that came after that, there is a real possibility of storyline conflicts. Maybe they have people who have read all that material giving them script editing advise so that it doesn't.

Maybe that's Lucas' job as creative advisor. I'm not even sure if Lucas himself has read all the material out there!

These stories are not written by Lucas. He is giving his opinions on how they should be done, but the movies are being written by others. That being said, I have heard elsewhere as well that the movie will have little to do with the EU.

Damn, I was hoping for the Thrawn Trilogy series ... Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. The books were great.

WOW!....so this gives the Star Wars community over a year to froth at the mouth. Talk about hype. I hope it is fantastic.....a rebirth of the franchise. As we here on the blue pages like to say.....they better go big.....or go home. If they hit it out of the park with the SW faithful.....Disney could become the new Fed.....they can start printing their own money.

Perhaps they just intend to announce details of whats coming in the park expansions at the time of the films release.

I'm excited to see what Disney does without Lucas. Much respect for the man since I doubt I would have had the drive and determination to go through what he did to make the "Empire" of Lucasfilms what it is today, but he effed the franchise up as a director.

Lucas has and always will be involved in the making of the films. While he was a co-writer and executive producer for all six, he was only the director for four of them (Episodes IV, I, II, and III). When Disney made the purchase, and subsequently announced their plans for new films, it was also stated that Lucas would still be involved as a creative mind and will still be very much hands on in processes dealing with Star Wars. I believe Abrams backed up that sentiment, for what it's worth

I understand what you're saying. However, the fact remains that he will be a "creative mind" and not a director. Abrams does not have to do anything Lucas wants to do if he doesn't feel the need. As a director of episodes 1, 2, and 3 Lucas sucked. There are no two ways about that.

Just a few weeks earlier would have said a lot as far as merchandising goes. I'm sure they worked hard to calculate what date would be the best for company-wide sales. Coming out the week of Christmas is really bad if they think it'll be a home run with kids.

This sound like a Trojan Horse to me. Get everyone to get excited about it, have parents purchase a ton of merch for under the tree, then put the movie out at a time when it's too late to come up with plan B because little Jimmy didn't like the movie (or probably hadn't had a chance to see it yet) and doesn't want SW toys after all.

It makes me wonder if Luke dies in the first one to set up the events in VIII and IX and they're worried people are going to be upset about it.

I honestly doubt they have any idea how good or bad it will be at this time. There is probably a lot to figure out or they wouldn't have moved the date.

This release date is a foolish compromise between the studio and the producers and even a late 2015 release date is far too aggressive for a film of this magnitude with no finished script and no official cast. Dating films far into the future with no evidence that it will make the date has become a habit of all the major studios lately. It's turned into a meaningless game of planting a flag in the ground and announcing, "this date is mine." Disney is by far the worst offender. Anyone have plans for November 21st, 2018? Well mark your calendars and change your dinner plans because Walt Disney Pictures has officially slated, "Untitled Disney Animation Project" to be released on that exact date. They don't know the plot, the characters, the budget, the title, the director, the actors, or the writers but the studio decided that was a good release date for a film so they arbitrarily put out a press release about it. Mark my words, Episode VII won't make this release date.

Pretty much agree with everything you said. The one thing I'm not sure about is the last sentence. They may force (no punintended - I swear) the movie out come hell or high water. And maybe by some miracle it will even be halfway decent.

Exactly. It's not good. But it's Oscar-worthy compared to Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. I managed to sit through it and enjoy it at the theater. Some of the continuity issued annoyed me, but I put them out of my head. I watched it a second time on video and that was enough. No need to ever watch it again as I fear I would be openly laughing at it if I ever tried.

At best, look for an Easter egg thrown in here or there. The EU has always been an alternate universe and not a true extension of the movie canon. The movies will contradict it whenever they chose. It's not a consideration.

Lucas is in the spot where Roddenberry used to be for Star Trek. His name will be on all the Star Wars movies with some kind of producer or consultant credit until he dies. He can offer his opinion and maybe they will take it. But no one is under any obligation to listen to him any more. Hopefully, based on his post Jedi track record, no one takes his opinion too seriously.

As much as I would love this to be true it just doesn't seem feasible. Hamill, Fisher and Ford are simply WAY too old to fit into the chronology of those books. Leia is pregrant with twins in that storyline - and I don't think a pregnant Carrie Fisher would look right.

As he has done. He does respect the EU, but he does not let it dictate his moves with the movies. Also, he is not writing these movies. He is only a creative consultant. That's it.
