Breaking News: The End Is Here!

Wasn't the Home Improvement "set" just something set up to replace the tour's bee scene from Honey I Shrunk the Kids? I didn't think that was really used in the show.

Re: "Making of the Haunted Mansion" attraction

What and where was this?

It was a set from the Haunted Mansion movie that you could gawk at for a minute before they played a DVD-esque featurette about the movie on some monitors. It was a neat set, but not anything to write home about. It was located where the 101 Dalmatians stuff at the end of Backstage Pass was.

Edit: http://allearsnet.com/tp/mgm/m_backstage.htm says that the Home Improvement set was a recreation. Oh, and there's some pictures here, if anyone's interested.

Aw, that's kind of sad. I worked the opening of the Home Improvement sets years ago. Spent much time on those sets. Still...meh. I thought they were out of date when they opened there. :p

Did they destroy the stuff in the Creature Shop too? That stuff was decomposing badly when they shut the place down.

Sometimes some set are replicas of the original sets (like Home Improvement, when they did the guide to TV special) sometimes are the original ones (HM, 101 Dalmatians and so on). Most of the important thing is to have the plans, sketchs, and detail pictures, so in a future they can be redone.

That happen with the movie 2001, the sets were destroyed by a fire at MGM and by plans, pictures and original set designers notes, they rebuild the sets.

Today March 29, 2005, the classic Home Improvement Sets and the sets from the "Making of the Haunted Mansion" attraction were destroyed to make the way for... nothing.

That's right folks. The one of a kind sets were completely demolished and in a dumpster behind the Special Effects Water Tank at the Studios.

All that was left from the Backstage Pass sets were two table saws. Most likely they will be relocated to the scenic shop.

I knew this day would come but just not so soon!

It was so sad to see all of it in wreckage. In case you are wondering nothing was salvagable, it was all completely destroyed.

Anyone who more or know why this happened?

OK... DISCUSS...

I'm not allowed to comment on such an action until I know how TDL/OLC would handle this situation. Then, and only then, can I make a "unbiased rant".

What a waste of space that whole area is. Who really wants a tram ride through a bunch of old garbage? The catastrophe canyon thing is dated as well, tear it down. Tear it all down I say! That would be an awesome place for a new playground and meet and greet. Or a new dumbo type ride featuring the characters from Aristocats.

Hey,
I'm a scenic design major at school (and plan to work for imagineering eventually! :) ) One of the worst things to do is after a show is done, take a sledge hammer to some beautiful pieces of scenery so it can fit in a dumpster. The deal is that that particular piece of scenery did what it was supposed to do, and it is more economically feasible to just get rid of it and make room for what is next. It stinks..believe me...I know!!! But it's something that has to be done! :(

Old sets and stuff like that eventually has to go, the only thing I don’t get is why Disney doesn’t realize that they have a gold mine on their hands. All they would need to do is list the stuff on eBay or set up their own auction site and people would pay them to take it off their hands. Lets be real they could list paper towel holders from a remolded bathroom at one of the parks and someone would buy it.

I keep hearing about materials from "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" coming to those soundstages and the backlot tour. Granted, all I hear is from the civil engineering side of things and not the creative folks. It could all be talk. But, there were pretty seroius rumblings going on about how they would have had a gold mine if they had kept the residential street and turned it into Wisteria Lane from "Desperate Housewives" (can you imagine that place during the SuperSoaps weekends?). In addition, after the success of the "Lost" stunt during the ESPN Exec. Weekend, there was some hot talk about something with Catastrophe Canyon and "Lost" but I'm not sure how that would fit. The benefit, of course, to both "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" is that they fit perfectly with the studio theme, and they are both produced by Touchstone Television, in addition, to being aired on ABC. That, alone, brings back the old rumor of the park's name change to the "Disney-ABC Studios" that made the rounds right after the ABC purchase. That would solve the MGM problem and eleminate the confusion with the "Walt Disney Studios" in Paris. Ehh.. something to think about.

Would it be worth it to Disney to list these products on eBay or something like that? While they may get a few bucks its probably just a drop in a huge lake. As a fan of a show, i would love to own parts of the show but i am sure its just trash. I am guessing they trashed it on purpose so people wouldnt go digging through the dumpster and pulling out stuff to keep?
