Brad Rex V.P. of Epcot/Update

Brad Rex is a decent guy. Not the greatest person to ever run a Disney park, but by far the best of the current crop of executives running things at WDW.

Meg Crofton is a figurehead, and a useless one at that. She'll be gone whenever Jay Rasulo is shown the door.

Gutted!

He says that no big celebration is planned for Epcot's 25th...

:zipit:

My stomach sank through the floor when I read that part, too.

How could they just ignore a milestone like a 25th anniversary? :hammer:

EPCOT is the best, and it just drives me absolutely crazy to think that the best that can be done to celebrate would be a pin or a t-shirt! They might as well turn Space Ship Earth into a dang pink cupcake! :brick:

Guffaw!

Now I will need to go and breathe into a paper bag after that whirlwind....

From personal experience, Brad is an extremely nice guy, and one that cares about the park. In the end, I doubt it was his call whether or not Epcot's 25th would be heavily celebrated.

This whole Epcot's 25th soap opera affair, and indeed Epcot's entire direction as of late, reminds me of a certain number from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas:

Poor Jack
Lyrics by Danny Elfman

Jack: And nobody really understood, well how could they?
That all I ever wanted was to bring them something great
Why does nothing ever turn out like it should?

Well, what the heck, I went and did my best
And, by god, I really tasted something swell
And for a moment, why, I even touched the sky
And at least I left some stories they can tell, I did!

(Substitute "Epcot" for "Jack")
:sohappy:!!

I like what has been done in the park. But I feel for Brad, look when he started his as it was said, Tenure. Even with that he was able to keep things moving. That's determination.

No retro 25th shirts?

I don't want a pin. I want commemorative T-shirts and hats with the retro Epcot logos and such. I can't believe they aren't at least seizing the merchandise opportunities that could be had with a 25th anniversary. Oh, Disney where is the Epcot luv?

I am sure that the cast will be wearing some commemorative buttons on Epcot's 25th. There ya go.

Thanks :p

I am sure that B Rex is a very nice guy, and there have been some good things happening at EPCOT. But still...

All in all the changes and updates seem good, and I am excited to see things happen. I can't wait to see the 3 Caballeros.

I would say Epcot has received the best treatment of the 4 parks in recent years...hundreds of millions in spending there, which puts the MK and MGM to shame. AK has done OK for itself, but it's also new...of the developed parks, I have been very pleased with the work they have been putting into Epcot. They have revitalized all of Future World (like or hate the changes, in the last 10 years, they have redone almost everything). And Mission: SPACE? Sure, people have died, but I think the ride itself is brilliant...classic Epcot area music outside, an aesthetically gorgeous entrance, very cool (or cold) theming, and it's one of my favorite rides ever. Compare that to...Stitch? The Narnia joke? If they treated MGM similar to Epcot, I would be ecstatic. Perhaps MK and MGM need new VPs.....

About a year ago, folks were considering marketing Epcot's 25th from a retro/futuristic angle.

We'll have to wait to see whether or not anything actually comes of those plans; you know how often things change with Disney!

Very true. In actuality, he doesn't have THAT much power in the company. And, I, too, am very sad to hear nothing is planned/coming. But, the silver lining is that I now feel no pressing need to redo my schedule to go this coming year. And, I'll be glad to tell Disney so.

Its not really Brad Rex's fault that nothing could get accomplished for Epcot's 25th anniversary. I know that there was a group of imagineers and show designers that were dead set on having a new Illuminations this year, as well as some other new entertainment offerings. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that the people running WDW don't really have that much power to speak of (Meg Crofton), or those that do are total idiots (Erin Wallace).

I'm still holding out for a new Illuminations. With the advances in programming and show design, it only takes a span of a few months to create a new nighttime spectacular. Compare that to the 3+ years it took to create RoE.

I was a little surprised when the topic of the wand didn't come up. I don't know about others, but if I got to interview the VP of Epcot, I would definitely say "what's up with the wand anyway?"

All you'd get would be the same old rehashed corporate answer:

"Sorcerer Mickey's Wand is a proud and magical symbol of making your wishes and dreams a reality. During this Year of a Million Dreams®, it serves as a reminder of the power to believe in shaping a better world, a dream which started with Walt Disney and was realized in Epcot® Park."

LOL... seriously, I think it's only on fan boards that these kinds of questions seem pressing.

And I'm fairly sure the real answer is: "We want to keep reminding people they're at Disney." It's about brand recognition. In an age when many people get confused, thinking WDW = MK, that Epcot is a separate entity, or that Universal is included on their park hopper ticket, it behooves Disney to keep reminding people they're at a Disney park. Thus, a giant Mickey hand on Epcot's main landmark, and a giant Mickey hat in the middle of MGM. I don't know if the lack of similar treatment at AK is because people don't get confused about it or simply because there isn't any way to make it fit with the theming. Either way, I doubt any of the higher-ups are primarily concerned with removing the hat or the wand anytime soon.
