My gosh what's the big deal? I mean why ask for it come out on DVD sooner than it's suppose to, Disney is right that it's in the best interest of the Theater owners as then it sticks around and allows more people to see it while in the theater, hence the theater makes more money, and then makes more people realize they really like it and want to buy it and hence increases DVD sales, and Disney makes more money, so everybody wins then...so I don't understand the Theater owners point of view on this matter...

yeaa, I heard about this... To me, its just so greedy by the studios. They want to get the theater run in really quick and push movies out on dvd fast. It creates a problem for the theaters because many people, especially in hard times like these, will say lets just wait for the dvd. That comment can be justified, because theater price are soooo high nowadays. Where will this end tho? In the future will studios be pushing for 10, 8, 3 week dvd releases? hey maybe all movies will be straight to dvd, those ones are always the best right??(JK)

The theater owners are protesting the fact that Disney plans to release the DVD 12 weeks after the theatrical opening. Disney is the one rushing this to DVD, with the result being that it will not stick around in theaters and that many people might skip the theater altogether, knowing they can get it on DVD in 3 months.

I'm with the theaters on this. Disney should cool its heels. They say they just want to do this a couple times a year, but if theaters don't draw a line in the sand, then every studio will think there's a "special" reason some movie should be treated differently, and before long everything will be rushed to DVD, like the article says.

Edit: I just saw your last reply. I'll leave this as an expression of my opinion, with the caveat that it's no longer aimed at you.

If they are griping this much about a 12 week window I wonder if their heads will explode if Iger ever decides to do a simultaneous theater/DVD release liked he talked about when he first got his current job?

I don't see an issue here. It's Disney's product, Disney can market it as they see fit.

The article gives no indication that Disney encouraged the theatres to invest in 3D technologies by giving any commitment regarding release dates for the DVD. In fact, in Disney felt it prudent, they could release the film direct-to-DVD.

Disney is not responsible for the investment decisions of theatre groups.

Disney doesn't own a movie theater chain, though. Part of their marketing plan is contingent on maintaining cordial business relationships with independently owned movie theaters. Thumbing your nose at the financial interests of a business partner seems like a poor operating model to me.
