thought you guys would get a good chuckle.

the bottle opener attached to my key chain (that has been in the parks dozens of times) got confiscated at AK this morning. its an old 308 shell casing with the bottle opening section cut out.
i get it no guns ect ect but an inert novelty? i elected not to return to my car because thats a hassle and its a 5 dollar bottle opener. thus i handed it over :arghh:
security had to call a supervisor to make the call and she didn't even know the policy they had to explain it to her.:cool::cool:

we always here about the security scares so i figured you all would enjoy mine.

edit for theatrics: the security gentleman compared it to brass knuckles...

So not at all surprised. I'm surprised you made it that long. You are dealing with people that work security at WDW. Decision making capability and good judgement not at all part of compensation justification.

If you call what they are paid compensation.

Well, it sounds like Disney is getting what they paid for.

I work as a security officer at one of the hotel casinos here in Detroit and i work with some people that are overly strict on the rules, we have a no weapons policy and i could probably point to a few that would not allow such an item, and a lot more that wouldnt look twice if they saw it. Some people in security can be overly strict and not use any discretion, just different styles or usually new officers worried about making a mistake. We have a "no outside food or drink" policy, however there are degrees if you are bringing a lunch to eat at a slot machine i cant help you, but if you are out and you have some leftovers from dinner some restaurant down town and your heaed to the parking garage or valet i am not going to stop you. Or if i see someone with their own alcohol in the casino we are supposed to contact state police and ban the person but its not really worth the hassle so some times i just tell them to throw it out while others act like the sky is falling

Adding this rather than creating a thread:

We went to Epcot Wednesday and got all the way to bag check when my sister's boyfriend asked me for the car keys because he realized he had a pocket knife on him. Security overheard and asked him 'How big is the knife?' (Cue Crocodile Dundee...) My sister's boyfriend pulls out and opened the knife which was must have been a 4" blade and the security guy closes it back up and just goes 'That'll be fine' and walks him up to bag check and tells the guard at the table to let it through.

I was pretty shocked to be honest. Maybe it would have been different if it was found during bag check as opposed to the guard overhearing him saying he needed to take it back to the car.

Whilst it seems kind of extreme they just said you couldn't take it in and gave you the option of putting it back in your car. Even though it couldn't be fired, not allowing it in probably eliminated any tiny chance of it causing panic? If somebody has something looking like a bullet and starts waving it around saying "You see this, I'm going to shoot you with this", it wouldn't look very good regardless of the fact that in reality it couldn't harm anyone.

We live in a world right now where people with bullets will kill complete strangers, the more public the setting the better. Whilst this 'shell case' of yours was harmless, not everyone seeing it would know that and not allowing it in just eliminates the chance of it causing any potential 'scares' later on if you were that way inclined.
Not sure what part of the world you live in but I know of no one that would be threatened by a bottle opener like this, nor they be threatened if it were a real bullet someone was waving around... they might go and lay the person out until someone from the local funny farm could come and cart the person away... but frightened? I just can't fathom that happening with a shell casing or even functional bullet.

It just prevents misunderstandings more than anything I guess. This post gives a better example than mine.

I completely agree that the item is harmless. My DH and I are both CPL carriers. We have even taken the time to properly teach my DS about how to properly and safely store, handle and shoot firearms. We would probably not give the keychain a second thought if we had seen it. However if (and this is a big if) you have the keychain in your pocket and you were in line for food or in a store and you grabbed money out of your pocket and your keys fell out and landed on the ground, notch side down, the person behind you just sees a bullet mixed with your keys. They have no way of knowing if you have one bullet or 20. Most people couldn't tell the difference between a .308, 22LR, or a 9mm round. To them a bullet is a bullet. So now you have a guest who seen the person in line in front of them conceal "bullets" in his pocket and they believe he may have a gun. They go from the store looking for security who then calls it in as a possible gun sighting and it all goes downhill from there.
Remember Disney guests can get CRAZY after 8+ hours in the hot sun and long lines. I can see the reason that one security guard said NO. Was he being a little overly cautious, probably. Is it because of the world we now live in, definitely!

I was really just trying to answer the ops question, he can take a decommissioned AK-47 into the parks as far as I'm concerned :D

As someone from the suburbs of NJ(which has the lowest gun ownership % in the US besides Hawaii), I have not run across many guns or bullets in my lifetime( I think I saw a .22 in boy scout camp). But I still would not be upset or scared if I saw the bottle opener, as most sane people would not. Although hypothetically if the item some how fell off the chain and it was left in a ride vehicle it could possible cause a disturbance. Or if the owner, for nefarious reasons ( or not) decided to show it to somebody while clutching the rest of the ring and someone saw it in a que, that may also cause a disturbance.

I understand these are hypotheticals with a .0000001 percent of occurrence. I think there is a rational counter argument.
