And this is exactly as predicted, if for any reason Iger needed to retake control he would. This is the very reason he didn’t just leave the company altogether.

BTW, Chapek so far appears to have not left the company or vacate the title. So who knows how long Iger will retain control of the company.
The CEO, who was supposed to focus on operations, not being entrusted to do his job is expected? If the CEO cannot do the job then the CEO should not have the job.

Did I say expected? No, I said predicted. As in I predicted that if Iger needed to re-assume the responsibilities of CEO again he would. Its the very reason he didn't just leave the company, which he could have. Who knows the exact reason why Iger decided to re-assume the responsibilities of CEO, I'm sure it'll come out in time.

As for if Chapek can do the job of CEO, well he never really got a chance, so we couldn't see. As for if Chapek should be CEO, that is another conversation all together. The role of CEO in today's world given what TWDC is is completely different then the role of CEO during Walt's time. Look at other media conglomerates, most CEOs don't get that involved in the operations of the individual divisions, they have division heads that do that. In my opinion Chapek is way more suited to being a CEO than to be the Chairman of DPEP. He just needs more creative generals (division heads) below him that will run the actual individual divisions. That is why it was interesting to see who he would have picked as the next Chairman of DPEP.

We'll have to see what happens. Will he leave or be forced out of the company or will he stay and Iger hands the reigns back over to him after the crisis is over. Only time will tell....

Iger just wants to look like the hero for saving the company one last time. He might as well left the company to Mickey Mouse.

I'm really perplexed by this. As CEO, Bob C. should be angry that Bob I. is getting the press and taking the interviews. That should be Chapek's job. This is his chance to go on the offensive and show what he can do as CEO. Instead, someone said he declined interviews. Really? What on earth is going on over there? If Bob C. is that inept (maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but this situation doesn't look good!), why on Earth did they install him as CEO?

Chapek's lifeline will be short but not without leaving with some 💰💰.

With the confusion stemming from the article over at the-site-that-shall-not-be-named, I thought it'd be a good idea to shine some light on this comment posted to /r/WaltDisneyWorld.

tl;dr: Nothing's changed. Iger is still Exec. Chairman and Chapek is still CEO (albeit a ghost CEO).

This is poor reporting by the Disney blogs on a NYT article with one poor line.

When Iger stepped down as CEO, he assigned himself the new role of Executive Chairman. This position is different from Chairman of the Board, as it's still an executive position. This means that from the day Chapek started as CEO, he reported directly to Bob Iger, who had more authority than Chapek when it came to running the company.

The announced plan from that very day was for Iger to continue to steer the ship for the next two years while Chapek got up to speed with CEO duties, so that at the end of 2021 Iger could resign from Exec Chairman and let Chapek truly run things, answering only to the board in the way any CEO has to answer to a board.

In other words, the powers Iger has today are the same powers he had a week ago and the first day he wasn't CEO. More importantly, he's literally not taking back the position as CEO.

The NYT article has one line in it that implies he's "effectively" running the company, even though that was his stated intention from day one. The longer and more accurate takeaway should be "Iger filling the exact role he outlined when he stepped down as CEO, it's just more important now than before because the company is financially struggling from the pandemic".

Thank you. This makes much more sense.

As usual this is much ado about nothing. Iger promoted himself to Executive Chairman, which is an operational role, when Bob C. got promoted to CEO. Everyone got hung up on the announcement of his tenure ending in 2021 but ignored the fine print: he's still steering the ship at Disney and has been all along.

So all the stuff about Iger focusing on creative was just made up?
