When have sequels been expected to make less than the film before it? I need to see some evidence of this.

You don’t get participation trophies when you’re a tent pole film with a budget around $200M plus another $100M marketing cost. To wit: https://variety.com/2023/film/news/ant-man-3-box-office-flop-marvel-disney-1235564875/
Most semi-coherent Hollywood tentpoles sequels make more…
Cause prices go up and more casual buzz pulls people in that may not have been interesting in a sci fi or comic book flick prior…

Exactly. By the time the sequel hits theaters, there is a lot of support from fandom who picked up on it from not just the first theaterical run but opportunities on home vide/streaming/spin offs.

So if they have fired their Meta division wouldn't they need to file a WARN letter? I can't find anything for California or florida.

You’re comparing the media market in 1977-80 to today?

Why stop there? They showed gone with the wind for like 12 years…

All must KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!

Now I had to suffer this nonsense when Disney pooched the sequels…so let’s just clarify the ESB thing…
Star Wars was a first of its kind that ran for 2 years…so empire was speculated as a “letdown” by some and has conveniently been brought up when it suits Disney defenders now…

But what it did was turn an event movie into an entire universe/phenomenon. It established the aesthetic/feel (along with Jedi) that’s sold bout $100,000,000,000 in stuff.

That’s what empire did.

So maybe a little apples to oranges?

I mean, kind of my point. I don't think ticket sales can be a standalone factor in determining success of a movie without considering other things. For example, comparing Captain Marvel to the new Marvel movie I think will be totally unfair considering it was sandwiched between 2 of the biggest ever movies, and Infinity Wars set up that that movie would be an important part of the next giant film. And honestly, the fact that Kang was promoted after announcing him as a major part of the next big Avengers should make Ant Man to be considered a bigger underperformer. There are a lot of factors in play with what I would deem over or under-performance. And honestly, I feel weird defending a movie coming out in a month and a half at all considering I can't stand any of the GotG movies and won't be going to this one. Again, I'm far from a Disney defender (and I agree with a lot here that I think Marvel has had some real issues), I just don't like the "underperform" wording thrown around without something tangible to measure it to, and I think that number changes based on a lot of factors.

SO, to put my money where my mouth is. I think it's tough to look worldwide right now with everything going on in Russia/China, so I'm going to focus on Domestic. Here's the hilarity of all this discussion. Based on this being the last one, the fact that 2 was considered by many to be so bad, that this should be a big build up after the kickoff to the new phase (I know Ant Man didn't do it well), and the fact they have a lot of it's IP throughout most of the parks at this point, I'd completely agree to be considered a success, it should outperform the other 2 Guardians. SO, in this case, I'd kind of agree with you that ticket sales need to be pretty similar. Just stating I don't like it as the measure in all situations.

Ike Perlmutter is out -

“Isaac Perlmutter, the famously frugal Marvel Entertainment chairman who unsuccessfully worked to shake up the Walt Disney Company’s board in the past year, has been laid off as part of a cost-cutting campaign.

Disney confirmed the move. Mr. Perlmutter, 80, was told by phone on Wednesday that Marvel Entertainment, a small division centered on consumer products and run separately from Marvel Studios, was redundant and would be folded into larger Disney business units, according to two Disney executives briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive personnel matter.”

A cost cutter was laid off to cut costs. ;) Mr. Perlmutter is overdue to spend rest of his life in leisure.

OK, after the last few pages, I think there is at least some consensus that SOMETHING has to be done. Lot of talk about getting rid of some specific people but much more about "fixing" what movies the company makes and how they decide such. But what I haven't heard, especially since we know everything, just exactly WHAT is supposed to change.

Is it the decision-making process to approve casting/dialogue/scripts/costuming/whatever? The vetting of what content for what audience? What are we talking about making them change SPECIFICALLY.

I don't have a dog in this hunt yet but I am curious just what they expect current or new employees to do to make the public go back to movie theaters.

Perlmutter should have been out a long time ago, but I guess now is as good a time as any to take away any power he had over Marvel.

The one layoff nobody will mourn.

On the other hand, this means Marvel as a standalone unit no longer exists. Feige and Buckley have total control now.
