Hey all,

We're thinking about doing our first-ever road trip this summer. I remember doing this one as a kid, but require your recommendations as to accomodations. Specifically, any in Deadwood, around Rushmore and Yellowstone.

Thanks

Rushmore: There's plenty of accomodations/restaurants/etc in Rapid City, which is about a 30 minute drive away. Or, right at the base of the mountain is a town called Keystone with some cute motels and restaurants.

Yellowstone: I would DEFINITELY consider camping somewhere in the park itself. You better spend many days there. It's a natural wonder, obviously.

Where are you starting your trip? What's your route look like?

We'll be taking the I29 from the Manitoba border to Sioux Falls and then west on I90 into the Black Hills and Mount Rusmore area. We'll spend a few days there before heading towards Wind Cave, the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (via Wyoming). We're not campers, only because the ex took all the equipment in the divorce, although we do have a small tent. From Yellowstone, we plan on going up and following the Montana Dinosaur Trail eastward so we'll loop around back to North Dakota and home.

Hmm, okay. I don't know much about the Black Hills, but as far as Yellowstone is concerned, I know there are plenty of hotel/motels to stay at inside the park. They may be a little pricey, though. If you want to stay out of the park, Livingston, MT was known as the original "Gateway to Yellowstone" and is about 30ish(?) minutes north of the park on I-90. I stayed there one night. It's not a bad little town.

This sounds like a GREAT trip. If you can swing it, you should go to Glacier NP too, unless you've already been.

I've been to Glacier but my son, who is 8, has not. This will be our first road trip together (with the exception of going to the cabin in the summer which is 2.5 hours away). I remember going to Deadwood and seeing Crazy Horse, Boot Hill (Wild Bill) and the saloon. Close to there is Wind Cave and Jewel Cave, which are both open to the public.

As for Yellowstone, I would like to stay in the park, but when I checked it out, it says there is no tv, internet or cell phone service. Being a single woman traveling with my son, I'm not ready to ditch the safety of modern technology ... lol. I remember staying in a place called Jackson Hole ... but checking it out online makes me think it may be out of the budget :) I'll check out Livingston and Cody.

Wherever you end up staying, I'm sure it's going to be a GREAT little getaway. I wish I had the time and money to do something like that

We live about 3 hours from the Black Hills and are pretty familiar with the area. There are lots of places to stay from motel rooms to cabins. We've stayed different places and it just depends on what you're looking for and what price range. I'm glad to hear that you are going to Wind Cave. We've been through 4 or 5 caves in the Black Hills and Wind Cave is the most impressive. Your whole trip sounds like alot of fun.

Hey Dakota,

Thanks ... any specific hotels/cabins you remember that are worth checking out? My son is especially excited by Wind Cave!

Many moons ago I worked at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park so I am partial to that one. There are other nice lodges within the park (Blue Bell Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge to name a few). They all have cabins as well as lodge rooms. But with our children we found that Palmer Gulch Resort (very close to Mt. Rushmore) is a great place to stay because it offers a campground, lodge rooms and cabins to choose from. They also have many activities, a pool and pancake breakfast (hopefully they still do). Their website www.palmergulch.com would give you lots more info than I can. Happy Planning!

If you really wanted to stay in the park, you can rent a sat phone at pretty decent prices. $40 for a week or so - just don't use it unless it is an emergency. Just Google around, there a loads of places out there. Look for Iridium phones.

Here ya go - $30 a week
