Sounds like a construction nightmare! I am wondering how they will be able to keep the park open while some of this is going on. At the very least, will they need to create a temporary main entrance for some of the main entrance re-engineering?

On the bright side, sounds like lots to look forward to.

After reading this, I have tons of questions. First of which, I wonder if the Little Mermaid attraction will be anything like the one that was demo'd on the DVD? Second, some of the ideas sound like ideas I had heard mentioned for things in Florida. I wonder if several of these ideas may get copied to Florida. One Man's Dream would be great to update with a few of the ideas mentioned.

It also leaves hope that Animal Kingdom may get fixed too! I realize DAK doesn't need a huge amount of fixing, not like DCA does, but it still needs some necessary changes.

I think I am most impressed by the 9000 seat area for some Disney's World Of Color, if I'm not mistaken.

A temporary main entrance will debut later in 2008. The Millionaire Building will become the temporary entrance portal funneling people into the Hollywood section. Retail and Guest Services will set up in there as well. Imagine a temporay version of WDS Paris' entrance.

Here's the only piece of concept art released so far. Not sure how it compares to what was on the DVD. I have heard the DVD version was more similar to Peter Pan's ride system, whereas the concept art looks to be for an omnimover.

I think they mean 9,000 person capacity, not exactly 9,000 seats. Though I do think some sort of amphitheater will be worked into the design....

Wow, those ride vehicles sure look familiar...

Where's Nemo?

Looks like the picture on the DVD....wonder if that sparked anything. I would love to see it in WDW too.
Does anyone know know the time line of when this is supposed to start end end?

I am so excited for this. DH and I have been to DCA and it is a little underwhelming. The attractions are great, but too few. I will be planning a 2012 trip to DCA for sure!

Hrmm...very interesting. My first trip is coming up in January -- I may have to plan another for when the "fix" is in.

I'm very excited about Carsland. It's one of my all time favorite animated films and I've always hoped that Radiator Springs would be recreated in a park. And the ride should be the E-ticket that the park needs so badly. I also think the Little Mermaid dark ride finally coming to reality is wonderful. And the World of Color has been getting great publicity for a long time.

I, though, differ from the general public in that I LOVE the entrance plaza and Paradise Pier, the two areas that will be changing the most. I love the "CALIFORNIA" sign out front and the postcard look of the entrance. And Paradise Pier was one of my favorite parts of the park. The music and the themeing worked perfectly for me and I will really hate to lose the Maliboomer. Also losing Golden Dreams is a big blow to me because I think that attraction sets the tone of the park better than anything else. I really wish I could have been in the park in 2001 when the "California" theme was more evident that it will be in a few years and even the way it is now.

Overall, I can't complain about any of this though. These changes are needed and I guess I can sacrafice those few things in order to get so much more in return. Good luck WDI!

I agree with you on much of this. I don't have a problem with the entrance as is, so changing it doesn't feel necessary to me. Spend that money making Grizzly River Rapids something worth riding! I also don't want to lose Golden Dreams, because it is such a well-made film. There was talk at one time of it being moved to a new, smaller theater behind Sunshine Plaza. I hope this is the case. Interestingly, though, the press release didn't mention that The Little Mermaid would be replacing it, even though that's the current rumor.
I do differ with you in that I definitely won't miss The Maliboomer or any of the other cheesy carnival rides in Paradise Pier that may be getting the boot (Animal Kingdom: Yours should be next!). I'm glad California Screamin' is staying, even if it has no great theming to it. It's about the only thing I ride with any frequency back there...and I'm at the Park about once a week.
I also hope they don't put in the Disney Studios Paris Cars attraction. We've already got that with Francis' Lady Bug Boogie...and we really don't need two of the same thing. The Park has few enough attractions. Do we need duplicates?
I was happy to read about The Walt Disney Story. I hope they bring back the "One Man's Dream" film, too. It was taken out far too quickly.
And finally, it wasn't mentioned in the press release, but I had also heard rumblings from people like Al Lutz (and for god's sakes, leave the man alone. He seems to know his stuff and genuinely seems to care about the Parks) that Muppet-Vision will be removed for Mickey's Philharmagic. I truly hope this is just a bad rumor. It is, in my mind, one of California Adventure's best attractions, and it would be a real shame to lose it to another 3-D movie which I feel is just a rip-off of every one that has come before it. Sorry, I've seen Philharmagic a number of times, and I don't think it's as great as other people seem to. If they do bring it to California Adventure, I hope it is put somewhere else in the Park. As mentioned, the Park has few enough attractions. Why kill something as wonderful as Muppet-Vision?
Overall, though, this is definitely a good thing for California Adventure. Heck, this kind of budget would be good for any of the Parks!

For some reason, when I read the description of the E-ticket ride in the new Cars land I thought of test track.

I just hope they explain the significance of the Carthay Circle Theater in the park, because they don't do anything here at MGM about it and I think people would be interested in knowing that it was the theater that held the premiere for Snow White. I had no idea until I had my park orientation as a CM. It isn't like the Chinese theater where everyone recognizes it and understands it.

Since DCA's new Carthay Circle Theater will be the home of an "Interactive Walt Disney Story" to replace the one that used to be at Disneyland, I'm sure the significance of the building will be fully explained during the show inside.

For those not in SoCal, you'd be surprised at what a huge story this has been here in the local media. This DCA expansion story was on the Front Page - Top Of The Fold of the Los Angeles Times today. All the local TV and news radio stations have been covering it all day, and the radio DJ's on talk radio have been referring to it all day. A huge city like LA with 15+ Million people and all sorts of crime and drama and intrigue to report on, and the DCA expansion plans have been the top story of the day. Odd.

Here's a link to a great map of the changes coming to DCA in the next five years. It is from the Thursday edition of the Orange County Register, which will dedicate its front page and follow up pages in the front section to the DCA news.

This map sums it all up nicely, and helps those familiar with DCA to picture how it will all plug in to the existing park over the next four years of construction. http://www.ocregister.com/newsimages/more_news/2007/10/18disney_gp.gif

Because it uses a next-generation version of that same ride system as Test Track. Except with dual tracks side by side, extended track sections through outdoor areas of Radiator Springs, and then an indoor show building with talking and moving characters from the movie Cars interacting with you and the car you are riding in.

And maybe they'll get Honda to sponsor it, since Honda is already a big Disneyland sponsor and very few people in California buy General Motors cars anymore.

Well, that map pretty much dashes any hopes I had of Golden Dreams being kept somewhere in the Park...sigh.

ed: I'm kind of worried about how long it will be before a big, dumb hat is placed in front of the Carthay Circle Theater...*

*(yes, I know, the Carthay isn't around anymore)

Didn't see anything about Philharmagic replacing the Muppets or the proposed expansion of the Hyperion. And I wonder what the plans are for the Millionaire building?
