Best non-Disney Hotels to Stay At

I typically stay at the Best Western Park Place Inn & Mini Suites. It's directly across the street from Disneyland, nice sized and clean rooms, and has a pool (though on the smaller side). Their room rates have always been pretty reasonable for us. Another good place is the Fairfield Inn Anaheim Resort just down the street.

These are both excellent choices. Other hotels near BWPPI are the Tropicana Inn, the Carousel Inn and the Camelot Inn. I have stayed at the Tropicana and had a really good experience there. You can also get discounts at the Tropicana and Carousel (at least you did before Disney bought the Carousel, I don't know if they still have the offer) if you book a certain number of nights or more. I have heard mixed reviews on the Park Vue Inn which is also directly across the street. HoJo is nice but it is a bit more of a walk, but not too bad. The one that seems to get almost universal adoration is the Candy Cane Inn. It is a little farther away but they have their own shuttle to and from the parks. I would like to stay there someday myself but it is always booked up whenever I try to plan a trip.

I've always had a good experience at The Annabella Hotel. We even got a room upgrade and free breakfast for the week the last time we were there. We generally walk up to Grand California and go through DD to get to the main gates...not a bad walk.

^^^^ THIS. It includes a free hot breakfast buffet as well.

Just got back from staying at the Desert Palms at the corner of Katella and Harbor.
It's right after the Candy Cane, so it's a bit of a walk, around .6 of a mile. For reference, it's about as far a walk from the park gates as the Lowes Royal Pacific is from the entrance to Universal Studios Florida.

Very clean hotel and for prices similar to its neighbors you get included parking, wifi, and a very large breakfast buffet on the roof with views of the back of Tower of Terror and Racers.

Pool's a little small, but we never ended up using it.

I have had really great luck at the *Quality Inn & Suites at The Park* on W. Katella Ave.
This most recent visit to Anaheim was my 5th time rooming there, and it fits my simple needs like a glove.

It is small, but has a cozy feel. It is not fancy by any means, but it is also not a dump.
They have a small but nice outdoor garden you can have a meal in, and a small but clear pool and outdoor hot tub.
There is also a small play area for children surrounded by sand.

The staff have always been friendly and helpful when i have been there and the free breakfast offered every morning for guests is good and has a nice variety.
Not your typical *bread & water* breakfast either..(aka *Continental Breakfast* )...no, we are talking fresh waffles, eggs, sausage, toast, bagles, fruit, cereals, hot oatmeal, juices, coffee tea..etc.
If that is not enough, there is a 24 hour *Dennys* right next door which is handy for late breakfasts or late night inexpensive meals once the Parks close if that strikes your fancy.

The location of this particular Quality Inn is the best thing about it...it is removed far enough away from the chaos, crowds and *tourist scene* of Harbor Blvd, but close enough to the action so you can walk to the front gates of Disneyland in 8 to 12 minutes depending on your walking speed.
You can see DCAs California Screamin* and the Fun Wheel from the hotel*s small parking lot...as well as the Disneyland Hotel in the distance through the trees.
The walk to the Parks from here is very scenic and enjoyable...lined with huge palm trees and sweet smelling flowers, all lit up in the evening with tiny white lights on the main walkway to the Disney Hotels from Katella Ave.
It is also safe...i have never felt uncomfortable walking back and forth even late at night and i am always on my own.

The rooms are small, but tidy, clean, and have a microwave and small fridge as well as the usual medium sized flat screen tv and shower toiletries.
They do have suites available too that are likely larger in size, but i have not personally roomed in one here.
I tend to look for mid-range budget accommodations when traveling, so i don*t choose the higher priced options.
Their regular rooms - the price is right considering the location, and the fact it includes parking and breakfast.
Typical rates are $79 to $89 off season, $100 and over peak season.

I would recommend it for people rooming together ( friends traveling together, couples in town for a few days, etc ) and also for small families.
A suite room may be a better option in that case due to size.

If you want the basics and don*t want to blow the bank account...i recommend this hotel.
Clean, very comfy bed.
Nice hot shower.
Decent free full breakfast each morning.
Walking distance to the Park turnstiles.
Appealing environment ( tree lined streets, safe walking, etc. )

My go-to place when i am in town.
:)

One I would not recommend is the Super 8 on Katella. We stayed there in March because we wanted to save some money but it was dingy and loud. What was worse was that what was loud was the people working there rather than other guests. We were greeted one morning with the sound of a maid cleaning the room above us, blasting the rooms radio full blast. It is also not particularly convenient to the parks (at least compared to a lot of better options) and the ART line it is on (#6) only runs one bus so the waits were ridiculously long. We tried it once but from now on we will go ahead and spend a little more to stay across from the parks like we usually do.

I have had good experiences with the Fairfield Marriott. Clean, comfortable, room that was affordable and within easy walking distance to the parks. I'm staying there this summer as a matter of fact.

What did you think of the Camelot? We are probably going to be staying there in August for our trip. Any helpful hints?

Oooo i'm going back in August too!
:)

I walked by the Anabella ( one you highly recommend i check out ) and liked what i saw.
Sadly it seems to always be out of my price range, but i like the lush setting.
Thanks for the recommendation.

I've heard good things about the HoJo, and it's right next to the Fairfield, and about $50 cheaper per night. Might have to check it out.

Camelot features really big rooms, so it's nice to spread out. Housekeeping and upkeep in the rooms have never been an issue. Then only problem I had was one visit where the shower faucet selector dial broke and they fixed it while we were in the parks. The rooms have been quiet and the beds have been firm but comfortable. I spend a lot of late nights in the parks, so it's location next to the Pizza Press and McDonalds makes it easy to pick up something if I'm hungry. Our usual room has a view of Tomorrowland and the top of the Castle just outside the door.

If you need a place with a bit more size than average, it's a great value.

We're going back in August as well.

That sounds like it will be perfect! My husband and I are taking his 23 yr old son AND girlfriend and sharing a room at the Camelot, which will be an adventure in and of itself.

The upswing is the girlfriend hasn't been to DLR since she was 5, so this will be like she is seeing it new...I'm excited to watch her reactions to everything around her when we go. I think I'll even splurge and jump in for a Fantasmic dining package at Blue Bayou for the whole gang to celebrate... :D

We're at the Best Western Stovall's Inn right now. We're very happy with our choice. It's clean and was pretty cheap relatively speaking (104 a night). You can see the rollercoasters of DCA and the fireworks at DL from our balcony. It is a bit of walk to get to the actual entrance (maybe 10-15 mins), but my wife and I don't mind it considering the savings and we enjoy the walk.

We are currently booked at the HoJo for our upcoming trip. I know someone did a trip report a few years ago and stayed there. Said they really liked it from what I recall.

Certainly consider it. Time is the most valuable commodity while on vacation. View the Fantasmic package and its sisters over in DCA for WoC as some of the biggest ways to save time to get a "good" spot for the nighttime spectaculars.

WoC's experience in particular is highly dependent on getting a good view, so even with reservations at Carthay or Trattoria - I still encourage someone in your group to get their early to get a spot at the railing. From front and center, WoC is jaw dropping. Only when you are close can you appreciate the way the individual droplets of water catch and reflect the light. A few rows back and the illusion is gone.
