I'm a Nikon person myself, but I have to say- I absolutely adore my Olympus Stylus 1010. That particular model isn't made anymore, but I'm sure there's something compatible. The greatest thing about it is it's "available light" feature--takes AMAZING photos (without flash) even in extremely low light! It's 7x zoom is nice as well considering its compact size.

I did just buy the new Nikon S9100 the other day-- hasn't arrived yet, but I'll let you know how it is (i'm stoked about it's 18x zoom!), then there's my Nikon DSLR and it's arsnel of lenses. Yeah- I walk around WDW like a packrat...lol

congrats, what did you go with?

My plan is to get something like the Fuji X100 for smaller projects. I have an older body, Nikon D80 but its a pretty solid body. I only use two lenses, they are so damn expensive.

Nikon 50mm f1.8 : cheap, one of the best bangs for your buck around. sharp and fast

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8: This ran me 600 USD and its a pretty awesome lens for the price. Similar Nikons run well above that price tag. Super wide lens, sharp but not the sharpest out there, pretty fast.

I know VERY little about all of this stuff...still trying to figure it all out a little at a time. We have a small home cake business and wanted to to try to get better pictures to post on facebook with out breaking the bank. I was told what i got is the end of the model year....anyways I got a Canon 10.1 EOS Rebel XS. In the next year i would like to get a additional lense but have no clue what i would need or want. All in time i guess. I think i better learn how to use out of the AUTO mode before I spend more money on more lenses

If you're looking to take pictures of products- I'd suggest a prime lens with a wide aperture (somewhere in the 1.4-2.8 range) so you can great depth of field, and be able to get a crisp shot without using the flash-- nothing ruins a product picture like a harsh flash!
Good luck with your business!

For a Canon..what would one of these run me??? Just a round about #?? and where is the best place to look for one?? I got my camera at Sears...they had the best deal within my $$$ range. But they dont offer too much in the way of additional stuff for it. I agree about the flash. We steam the cakes and when they are wet the flash will make the wet part have a glare. Thanks very much for the imput...so much for me to learn!! :)

That's a loaded question! Lol
I use Nikon, so I don't know much about Canon- but I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say anywhere from $200-$400 depending on what the max aperture is, what the focal length is and whether you get an actual Canon lens or third party (Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, etc).
I usually check B&H and Adorama to see what lenses are running, then I go on eBay to look for my best deal. If you have a local camera store like I do, they may sell refurbished/used/demo lenses at a discount. Ritz camera and Adorama both have an awesome selection of used/refurbished lenses on their website. Since you're just doing this for your own product, I'd say go with that rather then new-- but that's just me talking- I'm a broke, recently out of college student who's always looking to save a few bucks. Others (who may be professionals) on here may tell you otherwise!

I really miss my local Ritz...we had 2 locations and they both closed. Now I have to go 30 minutes south and on the weekends that really an hour trip with traffic. Thanks very much for the info. This give me a really good starting point!!!

Yeah- both of my local Ritz's closed as well. I don't even know of any left in my area at all--- the used section I was talking about is online- google "Ritz used camera". I think the site is called usedcamerasonly.com

adorama has a solid used selection...

I agree with the prime lenses. As amazing as my SWA (super wide angle) is my 50mm f/1.8 is a better lense in terms of sharpness and clarity.

Get a 50mm and learn to use your camera, plain and simple. You should be able to get a used canon 50mm for well under $200. After that, try and figure out what type of photography you like and what you will be doing more of. If it's product (cake) photography a 50mm may be the only lens you ever need. I like shooting wide angle shots so I have more wide lenses and only one telephoto.

All of that being said, the lens matters FAR more than the camera its attached to so when the time comes to go out and buy a new lens, don't cheap out. Do research too, it helps!

Have fun. There are a lot of people who know what they're talking about on here, so don't be afraid to ask questions...no matter how dumb you think they are! We've all been new at this at one point before :)

**Also worth noting is that your new Canon has a crop sensor. What that means is that if you put a 50mm lens on that camera it will essentially shoot like a 75mm lens (give or take a little the, crop factor is x1.6 on canons I think). So keep that in mind when you're thinking about focal lengths. I liked the look/feel of a 50mm, but I'm on a crop sensor too so I bought a 35mm which is very close to the same.

yeah, there is NO dumb question. Practice, practice, practice.... you can easily learn technical aspects, but you cant learn how to have the "eye" overnight.

Just picked up one of these (Sony NEX-3) for an upcoming Disney trip. The DSLR I have is a pain to carry around. I'm anxious to try it out.
