Be Aware: Traffic Enforcement

Speeding remains a significant problem on Walt Disney World Resort property and impacts the safety of our Cast Members and Guests. During the past year, Florida Highway Patrol has had an increased presence to help reduce the number of Cast Members, Guests and others who speed while traveling on our property. In addition, the cities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, which provide municipal services to the Walt Disney World Resort, have recently signed a services agreement with the Orange County Sheriff's Office to provide an increased law enforcement presence, including traffic enforcement 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Florida Highway Patrol has issued almost 1,000 citations on our property, some as much as $540. For most of us, this would be a huge financial burden. Unfortunately, Cast Members continue to constitute the majority of citations that have been written. A combined speed-control effort -- a partnership between the Orange County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol -- will be ongoing. I strongly encourage voluntary compliance of posted speed limits.

In future Eyes & Ears issues, you will see information about the physical and financial risks of speeding. Some of these risks include harm to yourself and others, premium increases in your car insurance and points against your driving record.

The Walt Disney World Resort has more people in a concentrated area than downtown Orlando. Because of this, the risk of accidents is greater, and speeding increases this risk factor. Please pay attention to and comply with posted speed limits. Voluntary compliance of posted speed limits helps create a safe environment for all who work and play at the Walt Disney World Resort, and in turn, enhances the Cast and Guest experience.
What else is new!...

One of the biggest traps they have set up is approaching the Magic Kingdom toll plaza. Just after the Mission: Space sign, the speed limit goes from 50 down to 35. I know many people who were given tickets for not slowing down for the speed change.

Thats where I saw about two of the probably 9 or 10 people pulled over.

I've been known to hit the 70MPH mark on World Drive (I'm just excited to get there), but at least it's during the day and on that loooong stretch of roadway where it's safe.

I never see police on Disney property so never felt paranoid about exceeding the speed limit.

Guess I'll have to re-consider.
Future advice... THEY are back... :D

Although at first I thought that this isn't a good idea on Disney's part, but my father reminded me that disney could say that "It wasn't us, It was the police" therefore they could not be blamed.

Disney is the one that requested and is paying for the extra enforcement to property.

Personally, I think its a GREAT idea. Why? There are FAR too many speed related accidents on property, and some of them are starting to get pretty major. And quite frankly, if you don't violate the traffic laws, you don't have to worry! Let's not forget, speeding is illegal, and dangerous.

I say KUDOS to Disney for caring about the safety of thier roads. Disney is paying for this, and yet they get no monetary return... They didn't have to, but I'm glad they did.

It really doesnt suprise me that alot of them go to cm, especially ones at MK. The road to the Magic Kingdom Cast Parking/Disney university is so hard no to speed on. Its a small little rode with a speed of 55 with nothing around. U want to go about 80. Plus alot of people might be alittle heated when they come home to work, or about to be late for work.

At night I keep my speed in check. I see "Bambi" and his friends on the sides of the disney property roads and get wary. I've hit two deer in my 21 years of driving and destroyed both vehicles. How much road kill do you get at the world?

If there ever is any, you never see it. They have vehicles driving the roads all the time checking for things like that, and I have never seen anything. I've seen a shirt or something on the side of the road getting on I4, but it's rare to see ANYTHING on Disney roads.

actually you aare very close...JEB (Bush) says we have to give everyone six. i give everyone (as do most deputies... not officers) at least 15. but then you get stroked.
Well, that must apply to troopers only and not the local police, as my cousin over in Melbourne Beach got a ticket for going ONE mile over the limit! (46 in a 45)

Needless to say, I really watch the needle when visiting them!

Just a peice of advise. arriving at a toll booth like on the toll roads or any other booth be careful because they will clock you and ticket you when you stop. happened to me once at a toll booth, it really sucks.
One thing I'm surprised is that they don't use the time stamped on the toll tickets to figure out how fast you were going, and write you a ticket on the spot! At least, this would work on the stretches where they use a metered ticket versus a coin-catcher every few miles.

"Son, this here metered ticket says you entered at MP 193 (Yeehaw Junction) at 8:00 AM, and here you are at MP 236, and now it is only 8:27 AM? Sign here for your ticket for exceeding the limit by at least 25 MPH (95 or more in a 70.) Oh, and park your car over there, you're getting a free ride from here in the back of a cruiser!"

Not to say I've ever gone fast enough on the Turnpike to need to consider if there are such ways of catching speders... :lookaroun

I remember my father telling me that this was tried by one of the Northeastern States many years ago (Pennsylvania, New Jersey?). There was a public uproar and the courts ordered the practiced stopped.
