Be Aware: Traffic Enforcement

One thing I'm surprised is that they don't use the time stamped on the toll tickets to figure out how fast you were going, and write you a ticket on the spot! At least, this would work on the stretches where they use a metered ticket versus a coin-catcher every few miles.

"Son, this here metered ticket says you entered at MP 193 (Yeehaw Junction) at 8:00 AM, and here you are at MP 236, and now it is only 8:27 AM? Sign here for your ticket for exceeding the limit by at least 25 MPH (95 or more in a 70.) Oh, and park your car over there, you're getting a free ride from here in the back of a cruiser!"

Not to say I've ever gone fast enough on the Turnpike to need to consider if there are such ways of catching speders... :lookaroun

They don't do it for a few reasons:

1) Once word got out, people wouldn't speed so no more speeding ticket revenue (which is the real reason for speeding enforcement on highways that were designed to handle traffic in excess of 95 MPH).

2) People who were speeding would just "lose" the ticket and then they couldn't be clocked. If you go the ticket at one of the exteme plazas you pay the same anyway.

3) If they did it with Sunpass, people would stop wanting to use sunpass. Since the turnpike wants you to use it, they won't use it to catch speeders.

I remember 10 or even 5 years ago how few police officers were on property. I guess its for the good of the public but i sure miss driving on property knowing there were no speed traps. I REALLY try to limit my drinking when driving on property,I don't feel "safe" anymore. I know, I know,-no lectures please.I didn't always follow the law- but I do now.

You don't feel safe? Well, I feel a heck of a lot safer knowing that the sherriffs are waiting just outside PI to catch all the drunk drivers before they hit me. I feel a lot safer knowing that they are keeping the speeds down, so that people don't loose control of thier vehicle and hit me head on, while doing 55 in a 35.

But that's just me.

So is Reams Road still one of the most deadly roads in the county? At one point, I think it was pretty highly ranked as far as the number of catastrophic collisions per year.

They've done some massive road work to both 535 and Reams Road to help alleviate the tight and blind corners. Speed limits have been reduced from 55 to 45 in some areas. It's become much better.

As unmagical as seeing people pulled over everywhere may be, thank goodness they are finally doing something about people who believe them getting to a theme park sixty seconds earlier is more important than other people's lives. Glad to see them confronting what is a huge, needless safety concern.

And I'm right there with you, Tyler.

I've seen way too many needless car accidents that have cost limbs, brain function, even lives - unfortunately, some people don't see the reality of this and like to think it will never happen to them. Somehow they are special, or invulnerable to the rules of physics.

So while increased police presence isn't terribly magical, I welcome it with open arms if it prevents those people from taking my life in their hands...all to rush around a bunch of themeparks :veryconfu because they think they are .

I too am happy to see the enforcement! I hate it when people think the roads at the world are a distant part of I 95!

I was there tonight (9-17-05) and didn't notice any lights or hidden radar gun watchers... Must of had the night off for the UF/UT Game.

Well, I have nothing against them pulling over extreme speeders. And that is true even though I usually get one of those tickets every year or two, as I think using a radar detector removes the need to be paranoid enough to avoid speed traps, and the other idiots on the road. :lookaroun

However, it would be nice if I saw them pulling over more of the slow-moving erratic lane-weavers. :hammer:

Anywhere around WDW, I absolutely do not believe that a turn signal means the driver is going to turn in the indicated direction, as more often than not they go the other way! And usually while cutting across 2 or more lanes of traffic!

Anyone who drives dangerously should be pulled over - too fast, too slow, whatever. Unfortunately, that's the only "wake up call" to many.

Personally, never had a need for a radar detector as I don't avoid cops - since I don't speed nor drive in an erratic manner they never seem to bother me. ;)

So did they get rid of that nasty curve in the road almost to the 535/Apopka Vineland Rd junction? I hated that curve and I didn't feel that it was very well marked. A tree was blocking the warning sign and I hit that thing at around the 55mph speed limit once and was lucky there wasn't anything coming toward me. Never made that mistake again once I knew it was there. There were always wrecks there.

Yeah, "deadman's corner" has been gone for about a year now. They're actually widening the road, so that eventually, it will be a divided highway, with 2 lanes each way, just like it is further down by the DC's.

Good. It's something that so badly needed to be done. Hopefully it will save some lives.
