BBB - take your own comb?

Last year I took 3 of my girls to the BBB. The reservationist told me that each girl should bring her own comb. I bought each of them a nice, new one to take (very sturdy). But fairy godmothers-in-training didn't use them. They used their own little cheap flimsy comb (which is fine) and sent it home with them.

I figured for the price, they decided they could afford to use a new comb for each girl, and save the guests the trouble. But I called today to make reservations for my girls again this Fall, and I was told again that they each needed to bring their own comb.

What's the deal? Do you take one?

To clarify...

I did not mean to imply that the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique can or does run out of combs on a regular basis, but simply they don't provide every possible type of comb that may be uniquely required by the child. It's always better to surprise a child with a free "magical" Disney comb as an unexpected gift at the end of the experience then disappoint them with the fact we only have one standard style comb available that may or may not meet the individual needs of your child.

Well..I just called BBB and asked why they ask you to bring a comb..and she said because they do not have the cleaning "blue" solution remover to keep all combs clean..They are not like the normal barber shop/salons.

They also do not have polish or makeup remover there also.

She said they will give out a "souveneir magical" comb but because of different hair types and sanitary reasons they ask that you bring your own..

Thank you so much! That is what I was trying to say. Not all little girls have smooth, silky hair that can be combed with one style standard plastic comb, but it would be difficult to keep all of the different styles in stock if a new one had to be used every time.

Edited to add:

I have never been to BBB, but are all of the Fairy Godmothers-in-Training licensed hairdressers? This may be a factor in why they have to use either new combs every time, or have a client bring his/her own. Sterilized, reused combs might only be used by a licensed operator? You would know, because it's state law (in FL) that the license be displayed.

I know that there are all sorts of licensing/legal health laws that don't make sense on the surface, but either had/have a reason behind them.

Now you know better than to bring logic and reason into a thread like this!

It is all a big conspiracy. Disney is a majority stock holder in several hair comb manufactures and they do this to force you to buy more combs. In fact it is the only reason Disney set up the BBB in the first place....to sell more combs! Open your eyes people! The mouse is forcing you to buy combs!

even in our own home, there was only one comb that she "liked" when she would let me use one; most of the time I only brushed her hair.
 Never, not an "insecure" child? I hear ya... a dozen combs in the house and they always want a certain one. Of course, since mommy usually does the hair, I get "silly daddy, that's not the comb I like. The purple one is my favorite."

Based on how the Fairy Godmother (in training ) asked the question, I bet they get the whole "favorite" comb thing more often than we'd think.

I don't think MOST people thought you implied that. ;) But, thanks for taking the time to clarify.

:lookaroun Shhhh... don't you know that's a corporate secret. They are trying to keep that under wraps.

Now, for all those that haven't tried BBB yet, if you have a little girl... go for it! It's a dream come true for those princesses (in training) :D

Just a tip, hit the Disney Store up for the dresses (especially the after Halloween sales) and bring it with you... will save you a LOT of $$$. (hmm... is this like bringing your own bun?!?!)

Thank you for calling! I was hoping someone would.

But I think it's silly that they don't have standard "hair salon" items. Oh well.

I couldn't find the exact requirements for a cosmetology license in FL (which is apparently what a hairdresser needs) but the renewal does involve 2 hours of sanitation training, which might be the answer to why they don't reuse combs.

Unless everyone doing the hairdos at the BBB is a licensed hairdresser, they may not be able to legally "sterilize" combs, so would have to have a supply of disposable combs in a wide variety of styles. And, many people do not trust that sterilizing solution; I have a regular hairdresser, and she has a box with my combs and brushes. Same thing with my manicurist; I have my own box with files, clippers, buffers, etc, along with my own polish. I also bring my own supplies for my pedicure, and facial/massage. I'm so particular, I bring my own relaxing music, along with my own blanket and wrap. I do use her towels, as I know she tosses them right into the laundry, and bleaches them in hot water.

I can tell you that they are not. I have no idea if they are or are not allowed to sterilize equipment or not but the CM's at BBB are not required to have a hairdresser licence.

One other thing to consider is that BBB is no typical beauty shop. The might have a girl for New Jersey in the chair one minute and a girl from New Zealand in it the next. This fact has to come into play when you think of the health aspects of BBB. More than likely a bunch of lawers sat around a table and decided that all the equipment would be disposable and used on one child and one child only. I am sure we all know how quick someone would sue Disney if their little angel got lice from BBB.

Well everyone was going back and forth and I was like..*LIGHT BULB*.well I could CALL them and ASK them..;)

They are not licensed..she said that on the phone..that is why no steriliziation and all that stuff..:D

I dunno...I'm with Merf on this one. Can you imagine if anytime you went to the salon you had to bring your own comb? A place that specializes in hair design should have hundreds of combs in every shape and style available.

If your child has some weird issues where they are afraid of other people's combs or get "attached" to whatever comb someone brushes their hair with (never heard of a kid having either of those problems before) then their parents should be carrying around special combs in their purses anyway.

I find this all very odd.
Ah...but that's b/c you don't have hair that needs a special comb. I do.

I have incredibly curly hair...and a regular comb simply wouldn't do. It would get stuck in my hair and then you'd have trouble getting it out. And most of those combs are flimsy, so it would have the probability of breaking in my hair too. Trust me...it's all been done before. I actually have to use a hair pick on my hair b/c it's got wider teeth.

You would be surprised, but I could imagine that asking for you to bring a comb could be for this reason. (Now, that might not be the ONLY reason, but it makes 100% sense to me.)

Oh and Disney probably only buys one kind of comb b/c it's cheaper...especially since they're giving away the combs. It costs less to buy those combs in bulk then to keep buying specialty combs which are only for those who need it.

I get that. And I would agree, except that 2 of my girls have thick, curly hair. I took combs for each of them, but they still used their flimsy ones and sent them home with them. It just didn't make sense to me.

I have a ? about the BBB? Does any one have a link to more info about it? Like the cost and how long it takes? What they offer?

this might be really cute for my 8 yr old as a bday gift when we go. she will turn 9 about 2 week before.

You can do a search on these boards and get a lot of info. You can get a little overview on disneyworld.com. I'm pretty sure AllEars.net has some pricing info specifics.

The smallest package (hair & make-up) is $45. If you add the nails it's $50. At that level, there are 3 choices of hairstyle. They get pretty expensive (in my book) after that - up to $225 - and include a princess outfit and photo. There's also a Hannah Montana package (around $130, maybe?). It didn't seem to take that long (they book appts in 20 min increments). They use so much product on their hair, that the style can last a few days!

I took my (then) 6, 7, & 8 year olds last Fall and it was totally worth it. We are going again this October.

I had to read this one...and reading people's posts really made me think...

My solution. BBB SHOULD provide combs...period. You're paying a high premium to get your little girl's hair done, and you'd think that it would be assumed at a salon that bringing your own comb would be unnecessary.

BUT if your child has thick/thin/hard to manage hair, then it seems natural to come prepared. My hair is thick and curly, so using a standard comb would hurt like a...well...hurting...thing.
