Bag for the Park

I am trying to decide what bag to carry into the park with us. It's just me and my husband and we have the Free Dining plan so we will not be needing a ton of snacks or water, etc.

My dilemma comes from the fact that I have a DSLR camera that I want to take into the parks at least some of the days we are there (at least one day in each park). For the days that I don't want to carry it, I will probably just carry a small cross-body bag with our essentials. But for days I want to carry it I can't decide!

I want something that my husband won't mind carrying part of the time. Any suggestions or personal stories of what to bring/not to bring?

The Only bag me and my wife bring to the parks is my Camelbak Backpack. Its pricey to buy but, It carries everything and we always have water. Both Cameras fit in the bag, along with wallets, and whatever small souvenirs we buy. It can go on every ride, and if you do want to carry snacks you have the availability. You can pick one up between 50-120, and it serves dual purposes if you go outdoors, camping, hiking, beach, ect...

That is the exact one we have

Okay about the water question- here's our favorite solution. We bought one of these water bottles with the built in filter- www.fit-fresh.com/products/livpure. We carry it in a ziploc baggy to prevent leaks. You can fill it up at any water fountain and get cool, fresh water- without the nasty taste. I know there are a lot of other brands too- but we were pretty happy with it (it's been to WDW twice so far!)! You can also fill it up, and squirt it back out into other waterbottles (or cups in the hotel room!) and use it like a brita! :-)

Good tips! Do you think a water bottle is necessary or is getting water (free) at food places good enough. Also - any thoughts on how the water tastes in the park? My grandma was there 20+ years ago and is still talking about how bad the water tasted. I assumed it would taste fine though? When we do Hersheypark (our hometown park), we do free tap water from the stands - although I do feel bad about the waste!

The water is gross. :) We use the filter bottle b/c it is easy. Usually we fill it, drink it, and toss it empty in the bag. So its not that bad to carry it around.

I always say I'm not taking my DSLR but I usually end up taking it anyway. I got tired of lugging my camera bag around on my shoulder so I recently switched to a kids sized backpack. I got one by Kelty so it's really sturdy, has padded shoulder straps, and smaller than a normal backpack. I'm not taking toddler size, I'm talking about the size that early elementary kids would use. It was hard to find one that didn't look like it was made for a little kid but my Kelty one is a nice blue with nothing else. I really like it. I use a camera insert to store my actual camera with the smaller lens on it and I found an insert made specifically for lenses for my bigger one. Both fit side by side on the bottom of my backpack which I lined with a think piece of foam. Everything is padded and I still have room for a light jacket and small essentials I need. There is also a spot for water bottles on either side and a front pocket where I normally store things I need to get to easier. I love that I no longer have a camera bag that never seems to stay put and was always sliding forward. The backpack is light and comfortable and is small enough that I can easily take it everywhere but not so big that it becomes cumbersome.

I have the Lowepro Passport Sling - http://www.lowepro.com/passportsling - and it holds my DSLR, extra equipment, filters, etc. plus it has pockets for little items like cell, a place to put a water bottle and it even has a zipper part that extends out if you need more space. (Good to put small things in that you buy as you go about your day.) It's not girly so Love will carry it for me part of the day too. I like it. Got it at Walmart for around $50ish I think.

A backpack, not a camera bag for sure --- just put some padding inside the backpack and you are good to go (camera stores sell the foam inserts you find in camera bags -- get a two-compartment foam insert and you are good to go with your camera plus one extra lens)....Whenever possible I carry nothing -- I stopped bringing a dSLR to WDW years ago, its too heavy and burdensome for the types of shots you take at WDW...I bring a top of the line compact camera that fits in a cargo pants pocket. In case of rain, I bring a small disney messenger bag with my folded up WDW windbreaker, and umbrella, and some plastic baggies for belongings when it starts to rain. Otherwise -- its cargo pants pockets and go....

Thanks for the tips! I'd leave the DSLR at home, but its our first trip in more than a decade (18 years for me) so I'd like to get a few shots. As of now we will have 3 cameras with us (2 point and shoot -- his is a "rugged cam" min is a normal with high res -- and one DSLR in addition to two camera phones and possibly purchasing a video camera. I know it sounds overboard, but I'm a tech junkie and I can fit everything into my current camera bag so it works for us, haha.

I have a dslr as well. I carry the camera case with the extra lens. It has pockets that will hold my cell and sunscreen. It has a zippered compartment that will hold credit cards, ID and my KTTK card. Last trip my hubby carried the case while I had the camera. This upcoming trip I'm just gonna buy a p&s. I just don't feel like carrying the heavy camera anymore.

I have a Tamrac Backpack for my DLSR. As I will be carrying a few extra lenses with me a compact bag will not work. I do plan to take all nonessentials out of the bag like chargers, flashes, cables and battery grip. This should save me some space to put things like snacks and water bottles if we want.

Really love the protection the Tamrac gives my camera. Can bang the pack around and not worry about the camera inside. Lots of padding.

I always bring a Disney tote (over the shoulder) because we seem to bring snacks or food back to our resort. One thing we must, must, must pack, is hand sanitizer. That's as important as the camera in my opinion. We also bring bandaids. Nothing worse than when your shoes or sandals fight against your feet!!!

I have the all black Disney Camera case with an imprint of a mickey head on it. I got it at WDW a few years ago. It has two sides - one for the camera and an extra lens and another side for misc little items for the camera. Its really nice and not heavy and totally fits in at WDW. :)
