Bad Magical Express, Bad!

Alright, so I've read all the good things about Magical Express and the some bad things about them, but I can say right now I will never tell people to use it. I've discouraged quite a few already and heard many others while at the parks do the same. So let's get started on this BAD thing:

We arrived at Orlando Int'l Airport on Thursday, May 19 at 11:25 at night and went right to our "Magical Express" bus. There were two of the real Magical Express buses waiting outside and one of the old Mears buses. Of course, we got to be on the old one. They got us to our resort in a timely fashion, unfortunately our luggage didn't.

We figured we'd use ME since we had a late flight and not that many people would be coming in really late and our luggage wouldn't have to sit. So we checked in at Pop Century and asked if the bags were there yet. The CM told us we'd have to wait 2-3 hours max for them to get there. So we waited and called down to the front desk at 2am. They said the truck just arrived with our bags and they'd call us as soon as they were off. 3am came and still no call. I finally got sick of it since I couldn't sleep because of my contacts being in. We called the front desk again and they said that our bags had just arrived and they would bring them to us by 7am that day. PROBLEM: we were going to MK for early hours that day and we needed everything. So we walked down to the lobby at 3:30am to get our bags ourself.

There was the 4 of us in my party, along with one other couple and a younger gentleman. The gentleman had just gotten home from serving in the army in Iraq and was on vacation with his family and his 10 month old that he was seeing for the 2nd time. He was needing diapers (they landed at 7pm, so before us and still didn't have their bags) and they didn't have any his babies size. So we talked to him to pass time and felt so bad for him.

Finally, the security guy came over, got all of our names and went and got our bags personally from the truck to give to us. So by 4am we had our bags and were able to get in about an hour and a half sleep that night.

NEXT PROBLEM: COMING HOME!

So you'd think it wouldn't be a problem going from the resort to Orlando Int'l Airport, but they proved me wrong. We had a 7:30pm flight and were told to be at our resort by 4:25 for a 4:40 pickup to get to the airport. So we arrived at around 4:10 to wait for the bus. Time kept going by and no bus ever arrived. Finally, at 5:10, the 5:10 bus came and the bus driver got chewed out because our 4:40 bus never came. Finally, all the CMs that were standing otuside decided to do something and got the VP of Mears on the phone to get it fixed. Finally, at 5:25 two buses showed up to take us to the airport.

We had about 3/4 of the people on our bus going on Southwest Airlines home, so you'd think the lady driving the bus would take us to our stop first and not the other side of the airport where only a few people were getting off. NOPE! We had to wait to get off at the Southwest part. After being EXTREMELY late, we got up to the Southwest counter at 6:30 or so and made it to security by 7:15 or so. Now remember, our plane was to take off at 7:30. We made it through security by 7:20, had to take the monorail to the gate and get to our plane. We finally made it to the plane at 7:25 right in time for them to let us on and close the door.

So...I will never recommend Magical Express to ANYONE after having not one single thing go right on our trip. Disney better cancel this thing before they get a lot of complaints and lose a lot of guests due to it. After all, first impression is always what they remember first. And even though ME isn't run by Disney, people are going to think it's Disney and make them dislike it.

Something needs done with this QUICK to get it fixed or else they better stop the whole ME thing.

Thanks for letting me rant, but I had to get that out there!

Oh, man..now I am worried since our flight doesn't land until 11:30 pm also. I figured it would be quick since there would not be a lot of people at that time of night. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience!

Does anyone know if you can bring a stroller with you on ME? We will have a wheelchair (that folds up slightly larger than an umbrella stroller) and a stroller waiting for us at the gate when we depart the airplane so we will have them with us for ME. If we get our bags at luggage, can we bring them on the bus that we will be riding so they will arrive at the same time? I know the whole point is so you don't have to touch your luggage, but that late at night it may just be easier so we will have it with us & can hit the sack when we get to our room.

Thanks!!

Trish!!! DO NOT LET THEM GET YOUR LUGGAGE! Let the CMs know before you get on the bus that you want to get your bags. Your best bet is just don't put the yellow tag ony our luggage. That way you can get it at baggage claim and still take the bus.

For your return trip, I don't know how to help you there. I saw people with wheelchairs and strollers using ME. So just let them know you're taking them yourself.

How horrible Scott. I hope the rest of your trip went according to plan.

Thankfully we didn't have any other problems during the trip. EMH was great for the morning at all the parks, but wasn't too great at MGM at night since we were so limited to what there was and too many people in a small place. MK is the only park that can really handle the EMH at night crowd.

yes, don't put the ME luggage tags on the luggage bags.. you can still use ME but don't let them get your luggage unless you don't mind waiting 5 hours before you get your stuff. If you are arriving early in the morning and planning on going to the parks right away and not needing ANYTHING you have in your luggage, then go ahead and use it, it should be there by the time you get back at like 12 or something lol.. that is if you get in at 7:30 AM. Otherwise, get your OWN luggage and make them put it on the bus that you are on!!!

As Melissa said, I think they want you to arrive at 7 in the morning, go to the parks and be back for check-in at 3 when your bags ahve time to get there. If you aren't there before 8 in the morning, don't expect your bags by check-in at 3. I say get them yourself and forget them touching your stuff.

Just so you know, most resorts only have 2 or 3 people from 1 am to 6 am that are working. Depending on what is going on at the desk, they may not be able to get luggage delivered at 3-4 am.

And at some of those resorts, the bell services person that is on the overnight shift may also be the overnight valet, so he/she may have to run to the lot to get a guest's car if they are leaving early in the AM. I know that's pretty much what happens after 2:30AM at Boardwalk.

Also, I know there was quite a bit of debate going on with the Unionized CMs having non-Union employees(i.e. the ME baggage handlers) coming into the luggage rooms and doing everything themselves. Since the bell services employees are all part of a Union and the contract states that only employees of the Union are supposed to work in the luggage rooms, there was definitely alot of unhappy CMs when this service was first announced.

I'm telling everyone to use Magical Express - just get your own luggage. I like having control of my personal effects anyway, so I just see the ME as a nice free magical ride to WDW. It's too bad they even tried to add the luggage service in the first place.

Yeah, it's not a problem as long as you don't have any bags...AND as long as the bus shows up on time to take you home.

They should have known before this started what they were getting themselves into, because it's coming back to bite them in the rear end right now. Otherwise, it was a good service.

Sounds like a problem that WDW and the companies it subcontracts to operate DME need to fix ASAP. Disney has the budget available to pay the overtime needed to rectify this.

I see DME flopping eventually. It's a good idea, but Disney drastically underestimated the demand for this. You don't run the worlds #1 tourist destination, yet prepare for a slow night in Branson, MO.

Yet another reason the unions in WDW (or in any customer service job, IMO) serve no purpose... the guest is supposed to be #1, not the staff. If the bellmen are feeling truly scared of job security, then work harder.

That's a heck of a wake up call. :fork:

amen... if you wake me up at 4am, you better damn well not expect me to be happy about it. And you better damn well expect to be doing some sort of refund on my accomodation.

Just so you all know, it's a silent call. You won't know they're calling unless you sit and watch your phone. So when we were told that at 2am, I sat there in the dark watching the phone until 3am when I finally called again and walked down to the lobby.

And to the 4 CMs that stood there watching one of the DME bus drivers get attacked to the point where security had to be called, you think they would've stepped in and said something to us or called DME to let them know a bus never showed up. It took the VP of Mears to get it straight.

The CMs should have called 10 minutes after the bus was supposed to be there and kept us all up to date instead of people getting security called because of their anger building up from the mess.

I cant understand why they are having such a hard time with this. If they are working with Mears, who has been doing this for many many years you would think this would have been an easier transition for ME. Hopefully they iron out the problems. There is nothing more frustrating then dealing with lost luggage and delays. Believe me I know, I deal with the Philly airport. :brick:
