How come in Philharmagic and Muppetvision 3D there is a red led display that spells everything out backwards? It usually say Walt Disney Enterprises or something similar... I've also seen this in IMAX theaters outside of WDW. Does anyone know why it's backwards??

Yes, it's for hearing-impaired guests to follow the dialog. With the assistance devices, the text shows up clearly so those guests can enjoy the show (I've never seen it work, but I've had it explained to me).

This link will pretty much sum it up.
Upon entering the theater, viewers requiring captions are given a panel of flat translucent glass or plastic on a gooseneck stalk, which can be mounted in front of the viewer's seat. In the back of the theater is an LED display that shows the captions in mirror image. The panel reflects the captions for the viewer, but is nearly invisible to surrounding patrons.

Muppets 3-D has it also. The words are reflected onto clear glass that sits in front of you so that you can read along with the script. Oh, Canada had it before the Refurb. I don't know it it's still there.

How odd, I was just wondering about this yesterday when I was at the movies. I assumed it was for something as has been said, but couldn't figure how it worked.

I used the Reflective Captioning before at Fantasmic. I was curious about it a friend who was hard of hearing so we sat in the RC area and I asked the cast member (who was also a friend of mine) if I could try it as well and since there was nobody else there they said OK. Its really simple to set up. Just a piece of clear plastic on a stand with a sturdy goose neck. Whenever they turn on the display they put up Walt Disney Enterprises so that you can adjust your mirror. It works amazingly well. And at Fantasmic its really cool because if you adjust it right (and the CM can assist you with that) the words almost float right in front of you.

Neat! And I think it's great that modern technology can make it so anyone can utilize these to ensure they enjoy the show. A good friend's father is hard of hearing, and her family is considering a Disney trip. I will be sure to let him know he has that option if he chooses to use it.

The description makes it sound more complicated than it is, I am guessing. Would be interesting to try - but not being used to split my attention between reading and watching, I am sure it would be difficult to adjust at first.

I'm sure that hearing-impaired Guests are quite used to it in their daily lives, watching anything on TV at home... And as another poster said, because the panel is clear, you can often position it so that you're viewing the movie/show *through* the panel, such that the captioning appears right in front of you or just below what you're viewing.

You can sometimes see the movable plastic panels in the back of the theater when they're not being used. The most often ones I see are in MuppetVision. They're all the way to your right at the back of the theater as you leave. They're mounted on gooseneck stands, similar to what a microphone would be mounted to.
