Backpacks

Last year when we went to Disney for Mardi Gras we brought in a backpack that had water, kid snacks, and diapers (for my youngest) into the parks. Were going back next week so the question is - Are backpacks still allowed since 9/11 and what are the rules for bringing water and snacks into the park? Thanks.

Backpacks are still allowed...but security will inspect them, along with purses, tote bags, cameras, etc. I have never had any trouble bringing in my own water, juice boxes, and snacks, as long as everything fits in my tote/backpack. As long as you aren't obvious (trying to bring in a cooler and picnic hamper) they don't say anything. Many people bring in SMALL coolers for formula, medications, etc and leave them in lockers.

Well, They are actually kinda lax on the contents of the bag too (I think it depends on who inspects you)..I went in there with a backpack that had:: Sketchbook, Pencil, Bottle of Sprite (ooOOOo risky), a Big Mac, and a bag of chips....all of which didnt get taken away or even questioned about....

They started searching everything after Sept. 11.

Everytime I went during Christmas, they looked in every pocket and such. If you have a camera bag inside of a bigger one, then you will have to take out the camera bag and open it up too.

personally, i think this whol bag searching thing helps just a tad bit...but overall, i think it's just something to help people feel safer. my dentist and i were talking about this on my last visit (she had just gotten back from WDW) and we both agreed that if someone REALLY wanted to get a bomb in the World, then they could do it...bag search or no bag search. i think the guy with the explosive in his shoe on that airplane proved that one.
but i really hate that Disney feels like they have to do the bag search...it'll really get old for those of us who are major park hoppers! like i said, i sort of understand why Disney is doing it, but at the same time, i'll stress again, if someone wanted to do something, they would do it no matter what!

but just a question. my sister is a diabetic and has to take shots. will they say anything about the needle?

the extent of the search deapends on who you have searching. Some made me oen every pouch of my backpack and pin bag. Others just looked in the ain compartment. One woman made me open every yellow bag I had from all my souveneir purchases. Then I had one guy who looked at my pin collection while there were 25 people behind me. They weren't too happy.

I'm sure disney will understand, however...take the opposite view. If they didn't search and someone got in, then disney would be in BIG trouble for not doing anything in the firstplace. Either way, people will complain. Ashcroft (eww) sees the same thing, which is why he warned that something could happen at the Superbowl or Olympics. He tells us and nothing happens--we complain. He doesn't tell us and something does happen--BIG trouble. Just disney trying to protect themselves, and if it discourages one person from trying something, then I am more than happy to put up with it. It's not a strip search or anything...

You should be ok, just explain it to them. If she has any medical tags or something official that you can show, take that just in case.

thanks a million, turkey leg boy! i'll try to remember and tell my mom to carry something official on her. (she's the one who takes care of ALL the medical stuff!)

DogsRule, i see where you're coming from! that is true...they would get into some major trouble if they did nothing at all. never looked at it that way before.

I don't understand something though. They check people with bags but let people with no bags get right in to the park. God Forbid this would ever happen...but can't someone just put a weapon or worse in their pocket?

well uh...they search us when we take final exams. But they only look in bags, not pockets. Perhaps they feel nothing really big could fit in pockets, which is certainly not the case with cargo pants. It just wouldn't be practical to make people empty their pockets. Perhaps they are playing on the idea that if you want to bring something in and see officials searching those ahead of you, you may turn back.

Still doesn't sound too reassuring

I don't think that searching pockets would be conceiveable. There are too many pockets on way to many people.

I hope nothing ever happens, but something could be put in a bag with a false bottom sewed in with something under it. There are countless other ways to sneak something in if really desperate.

I think Disney is just doing it to help those really worried about it feel more at ease and to cover their rears as best they can just in case something should happen.

They do have people standing at the entrance for the no bag people. When I went in through the main entrances to the parks during Christmas, they seemed to be looking over everyone that went through that line.

I have a feeling nothing would ever happen. But I just don't understand the security system. At SF Great Adventure we have Metal Detectors at every entrance.

No they are the stand up ones. And they actually work well. The lines arent too long. At SF they also have a lot of gates to enter, where as Disney only has a couple open at a time. SF always has them all open.
