So, this is just a thing I noticed... but a local media conglomerate that uses social media to share articles, news, viral stories, travel info etc., posted an article about Avengers Campus coming to DCA... and the comments have everyone up here going crazy over it.

That's the sad part in all of this. The regular joe and janes that don't go online and hangout at Disney fan discussion boards like we do are just fed pictures from the official Disney Parks blog and sometimes misinformed articles that are shared on social media. A lot of the content I've seen are making it sound that this expansion will be huge next year. Come next summer, a bunch of them may come thinking that this is fully immersed area only to find out that there's only a screen shooter ride and maybe long lines for meet-and-greets with Marvel characters.

When I think Marvel, I think of a big E-ticket ride on the likes of a next generation Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Pirates, or Haunted Mansion...they should have been more ambitious and opened first with a big attraction; what they are giving us in the first phase is a little underwhelming....hope I'm wrong though.

Here's a funny story..

Someone I worked with a few years ago was a huge Marvel fan, and was super excited for the changes coming to DCA. But here's the thing.. He hasn't been to Disneyland in over 10 years. I was going almost twice - three times a year a couple of years ago. Once the dust settled, he calmed down about the idea and never spoke about going to DL thereafter. I'm not even sure he went to see these changes in favor of Marvel.

So who exactly are the suits targeting? The average Disney park goer, or comic book / movie fans who don't go to the parks?

That's a long story. Pretty much the purchase of Marvel and Lucasfilm was cast in order to get the coveted male demographic who aren't into Princess stories and talking animals. Disney did try their best starting their own action film franchises that would cater to this crowd: Tron Legacy, Prince of Persia, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Lone Ranger, Tomorrowland, John Carter (and the list goes on..) and unfortunately none of these examples ever reached the heights of the Pirates franchise at its peak.

On the theme park side, we all know the recipe of a good theme park attraction. Look at Cars, first movie was good but the two sequels aren't as critically acclaimed. Who would have thought a franchise about talking cars would make for a great attraction? But somehow Disney Imagineering made it come together, Cars Land works because the place was designed with a lot of heart. You feel like you are actually in Radiator Springs, you see these iconic characters come alive, the kinetic energy, thrilling music, and realistic landscaping is magnificent. Somehow corporate economics went into the picture for Galaxy's Edge and unfortunately wasn't able to capture the magic that made Cars Land so great. With an infinite amounts of worlds, characters and storytelling, Star Wars and Marvel have so much to offer for all demographics and unfortunately both projects seem to lack the Disney magic that made Cars Land so great.

In the case of Lucasfilm, they might have bought it for the male demographic but they used it for the female demographic.

Great post! I haven't seen GE yet so I can't comment, but what I can say is this.. Cars Land is beautiful and great for the reasons you listed above. I don't think there's magic in M:BO or PP for their themeing, "wow-factor", or..whatever, they're just tacky re-skins made to advertise the IP (that's how I feel, surely i'm not the only one).

Where's the magic in a warehouse fortress power plant industrial macaroni art looking building in the middle of Hollywood Land? Where the ride's story is explained by watching TV screens..? Or the magic in a rollercoaster that was designed for a pier, now about chasing a baby with super powers? They make no sense, at all.

While I agree with you in terms of opening lands in phases, I think this was originally Disney’s plan. The e-ticket Avengers attraction was going to open with the rest of the land, but it has been delayed twice throughout the design process. Also, if they are Marvel fans and don’t go to Disney every year, they will enter a Marvel area that has a Spiderman ride, Guardians ride, Dr.Strange show and Avengers Headquarters M&G.
Do t get me wrong, it would be better to open this land with the Avengers attraction ready on day one,
but I think Disney would have preferred that as well. The question is would it be better to wait another 1-2 years to open the land when Avengers attraction is ready or open phase 1 next year.

I'm a guy and a fan of Star Wars and I personally don't mind the the emergence of these strong, brave, and diverse female characters.
One that is good at everything without having practiced at anything. One that can fly in space just like Star Lord/Mary Poppins. One that acts completely insane not telling her first in command her battle plan. Then there is Rose.....<sudders> Don't get me started on the comic book characters. The only thing that saves these people is an inept enemy that knows nothing about military tactics.

Let us not turn this thread into another SW movie bi*chfest. Take that over to the SW threads (there are more than a few) if you want to go back and forth on why you have issues with or why you like the current SW films.

Not to cause any havoc, and nothing against what you said, but I am a girl and feel like these heroic female characters are getting (to be perfectly honest) shoved down our throats.

But to each their own. That is just my opinion.

also the entire cars universe is designed around tugging on familiarity and americana. SWGE's biggest weakness is it completely lacks familiarity and instead feels like it's 'missing' the elements people expected.

It's ironic because everyone moans about IP in the parks and wanting originality... and that's what SWGE is.. and everyone just wants the IP they knew :)

It’s ironic until you consider that making an original land based on IP is counterintuitive. I suspect we will never see anything like SWL again or at least in our lifetime.

Tom Sawyer Island was counter intuitive?
Liberty Square was counter intuitive?
etc etc

People should focus on what is actually working or not... not try to come up with 'rules' based on copying ideas instead of rules based on fundamentals.

Yeah because those are good comparisons.
