Theme has never been the problem with DCA. California is a great theme if approached as the mythical world of "California" and the spirit that goes along with it, similar to how Disney Seas is about exploration and adventure rather than an aquarium.

California has classic gangsters, bigfoot, the golden age of film, El Dorado, the Gold Rush, Zorro, the lost city of Mu, earthquakes, The Barbary Coast, Mt Shasta's lights, etc.

There's no reason Disney couldn't have built a sprawling WRE-style attraction for DCA that incorporated 49ers and bandits and Zorro and such. There's no reason we couldn't have a rafting adventure that takes us into show scenes and encounters with California mythology and cryptozoology. There's no reason Hollywoodland couldn't feature a shadowy alley where we mount up with **** Tracey to stop crime or visit a movie studio ran by toons or muppets.

Disney's leadership was all about cheap and easy choices, and that's why DCA was a flop. That's why decisions like Pixar Pier, Mission BO, and Avengers Campus seem to harm rather than help.

If you want to see California done well, look at Knotts. Imagine if Disney had built Bigfoot Rapids and a Mystery Lodge. If Disney had a Fiesta Village with adventures through ancient temples. If Disney had a Sierra Nevadas area with places to explore. If Disney had a ghost town complete with a coaster that takes guests onto the backs of terrifying phantom cowboys who ride over the desert. Instead, we got a park dripping with 90's edge and insincerity.

I’m beside myself. What a beautiful place you’ve described.

I think you may have misunderstood my original post: "Disney has been pulling things out of their behind to fit the terrible California theme since DCA opened." I never claimed the opening day attractions didn't fit the California theme. Rather, my point was that the poorly conceived California theme has made adding to the park after its opening problematic, each of the attractions I listed support that point.

Look, this is a discussion forum, and I think your views on what should/shouldn't be in a theme park are probably shared by a number of folks. In the face of the Galaxy's Edge backlash, and the spate of single-IP lands it's interesting to understand how and why we as fans determine what makes sense within these parks and their themes.

My prerogative here is to discuss and understand, if you're "not going to bother with the rest," and participate in the discussion, then that's a real shame.

How is California a poorly conceived theme? Was it weird and redundant for Disney to build a park based on California in California? Yes, but California is rich enough in history, monuments, places, landmarks, etc. to create a well-executed theme park without having to be far-reaching and ridiculous, such as now.

I personally don’t care for going in circles with the same user on one thing for too long without getting anywhere; it annoys me and gets boring. Again, I already said agree to disagree. I’ve been here for a long time and anyone who’s interacted with me for the past nearly eight years knows that when I say “agree to disagree,” it means I’m done discussing something particular with another member. So now you know. The DLR forum regular community here is small, but there are other people here to discuss that particular topic with. However, I’m flattered that you’ve taken particular interest in discussing with me. ;)

I’d be happy to hear your thoughts on the CA theme, related to the first section of this response.

Top half is what we’re getting.

Bottom half is what we could have gotten.

It’s the land, based in Paris. But the two share the same design principles.

The top half is the current day Backlot at WDSP, which is quite possibly the ugliest land Disney has ever built. I think that's where the 'when are we onstage' comment from Tom Morris came from.

That's not representative of DCA's Marvel land whatsoever.

Avengers Campus is gonna be the sleeper hit of 2020. With so little announced and advertised for it, the public expectations are going to be non existent, so I expect many will be blown away. I really think it's going to be a huge win for the resort.
Spidey should be cool.

I do hope you're right! I'd love to be surprised.

Wow exciting news! Even though we all expected it to be up by summer its still a little surprising given construction at least look like its far behind. I imagine though they will be doubling the work to make sure it arrives on time. They must be VERY confident it will be ready this soon. I can't wait though, I just want Spider-Man to be a fun ride. We have ROTR to blow us away apparently in less than a month. It's crazy we are getting two brand new lands (Batuu and Avengers) with three E and D ticket original attractions all in one year time span.

I know not everyone is not happy with the movie tie ins but I am and my kids definitely are! To live and dream Marvel and Star Wars in one place is a dream come true for them.

Plus a new parade.

And by a total coincidence I've received some Disney gift cards for Christmas, and the Canadian resident deal on tickets is still happening, (which are valid for all of 2020).

So I guess I'm going to Disneyland. :)

I don't know. I'm finding less and less to get excited about with DCA as the years go on. Buena Vista Street and Cars Land are not enough, and additions since than have certainly lessened my optimistic view of the park's future.

It’s well known that by 2015 was the pinnacle of DCA...and probably will be for at least the next 20 years.

I was a DCA defender for the longest time until everything started to change with the Guardians. Believe it or not people were still complaining about DCA from 2012 -2015.

I think Avengers Campus will be enough to justify going to DCA. It's easily the best addition to DCA since Cars Land, and looks like it should be even stronger with the E-ticket.

What comes after AC will say much. Where DCA feels "Disney" is in its rich atmosphere (BVS, Cars, Grizzly). Where it fails is when it tried to carry off an industrial or even worse, hodge podge feel (Hollywood Land, Pixar Pier). This is what concerns me about Avenger's Campus. It's a new concept- which is good- but so far, it seems as if the Imagineers are going for hip and edgy. Never a good sign.

It’s still definitely worth going to. I wouldn’t tell anyone going on a vacation to skip it. I just find myself going there less and less. TOT is gone. SOC replaced with a lesser version. Used to love TSMM but the screens have been so dark and dim for a while that it’s not enjoyable. Just not worth wasting an FP or waiting 45 minutes for. GRR is something I only ride a couple times a year when all the stars align.

Also as a parent of a 4 year old there is just much more to do at DL. DCA hasn’t been giving me much of reason to use that extra energy park hopping.
