Avengers Campus - Reactions / Reviews

How cool would it be to have a land where everything looks like it would in a comic book, with the colors, shading, etc? This to me sounds much more unique than a college campus based on a movie about superheroes. It would be the comic book version of toon town. You could enter through a hole in a giant cover page.
That already exists...

Wow, will have to check this out then. The entrance too? Everything looks like a comic book as well?

In addition to that idea, the in land entertainment would be great with a comic land, the villians and heroes could fight or rescue innocent citizens (the park goers). There are so many possibilities. Instead we have spiderman shooting webs inside an industrial factory.
I think that would be really fun but there’s a big philosophy difference between that idea and what WDI wants to do here. Like with galaxy’s edge, they want to give you agency within the story. The goal is to make you feel like an avenger, not watching the avengers.

That being said I’m not sure the current plans live up to that idea but we’ll have to see when it’s eventually finished

I don't envy Tom Holland his position in this. Career wise, if he's asked to do the next Spiderman movie, is it wiser to offend Disney by accepting, or Sony by refusing?

he's already committed to at least one more movie, and I think the number is actually 2. He can't say no without breaching contract.
But I also don't think his character is doomed the way so many seem to think because of his tie to the MCU. With Endgame wrapping up all of that, he's actually free to build from where they left off in Far From Home. It doesn't mean I think Sony will necessarily do a great story since they've had issues with that, but if they do, it doesn't have to even really talk about what's happened in the past, just move forward. And he's free to move away from Iron Man.

As far as the park goes, it'll be interesting to see how it all comes out. It'll be a long ways from done when I'm there in Oct, so I'll likely not get to see the finished product. But I'll be curious to see how it compares and differs from Universal's take.

I don't blame Sony at all for this, Disney got greedy. Fifty fifty split plus all merch goes to Disney? Why would Sony take that?

well if i understand it correctly the deal they had now was that disney was getting 5% of first gross but Disney was also producing, writing and also paying large sum of production costs for the movie.
all this just for the right to use the character in the crossovers. not only that but Sony also got to use Marvel owned characters in any Spiderman movie.

i don't see how that is being greedy. Sony was basically collecting money with little investment in their side. we also have to remember that Spiderman movies from Sony were declining with each movie doing less and less. They had destroyed the franchise and then Marvel gave them huge money makers including Sonys highest grossing movie of all time with the latest Spiderman movie making over a billion and counting

My honest opinion is Disney won't buy another studio in order to not risk getting a monopoly antitrust suit. It was hard enough for them to get approval around the world for Fox, let alone another major studio. So I doubt they will go for it. Instead I again think they would make a deal to buy the rights back from the new owner.
Collider Movie Talk actually had some insight on what could/should happen. Jeff Sneider (their resident trade reporter) seems to be predicting Disney will settle for an 80/20 split, on the condition that Disney+ gets full Spider-Man streaming rights. He also thinks Disney should eventually offer Sony $1 to 2 billion for the Spider-Man franchise down the line, rather than offering to buy Sony.

In regards to buying Sony in the future , personally I doubt the Justice Department would allow it because of anti-trust purposes. If anyone’s bidding on Sony, it’ll be Comcast/Universal who almost took Fox. And who just signed a deal at Comcast? Former Sony-head/Spider-Man executive producer Amy Pascal. And Universal still owns the rights to Hulk and Namor the Submariner, so a Sony buyout could create problems for Marvel/Disney.

This inaccurate. Sony produced the two Spider-Man films. They paid 100% of the budget and marketing. Sony hired Marvel/Disney people to work on the films. Disney got 100% of merchandise, and 5% of first gross, and the use of the SM characters in the two solo films to appear in CA:CW, A:IW and A:E.

What Disney is now asking for is to take over 50% financing and get 50% of box office revenue (and presumably video/streaming ancillary revenue). Not just of SM solo films, but of *all* Marvel licensed character films, meaning Venom 2, Morbeus, Sinister Six, etc.

Sony apparently countered with 30%, which is more than fair. But Disney doesn't want fair - they want dominance and total control of the entire industry. Hence the 50% demand.

I fully expect Disney to make overtures to buy all the other major Hollywood studios at some point in the next 20 years. It's gonna be a blood bath.

Expect there to be one less d23 ride announcement while TWDC tries to fix it's big-little screw up.
I’m not sure what you mean one less ride announcement. The Spidey ride has already been announced and details already released by Disney themselves. We even know the suit that will be used on the ride by Spidey (unless they change it now).

So there wasn’t much to be discussed about this ride anyways, other than a recap and construction update with maybe some new concept art. The breakdown in Sony/Disney Spidey negotiations would have no effect on that.

What was hoped to be discussed was the rumored Avengers coaster. Which I don’t see how this Sony/Disney breakdown in Spidey negotiations has anything to do with that announcement. If it’s an issue over Spidey, they haven’t broke ground yet, they can quickly remove him from any concept art for the announcement.

So would you care to clarify your statement?

Wow this is really cool. I have not been to Universal Orlando, but this is what I think of when I think of a land based off of super heroes. I would love to pay this a visit one day. Did Disney not go this route because it would look like they copied Universal?
It also has a really great soundtrack.

I imagine it had more to do with the “true” franchise being the movies, not the comics.

You mean like a proper stand-alone movie? I love that idea tbh.

I think a proper Spider-Man standalone would be in the current MCU but it would not involve any Avengers especially since SPOILER Tony is out of the picture now, if we got something like the original Spider-Man for the MCU except without Tony intervening on the boat. Have it stay within the universe technically but keep him as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Who knows, if they make a stand-alone and keep Tom Holland and the movie has good writing then I would enjoy that but there are a lot of uncertainties regarding Spider-Man right now.

That would definitely be easier / smarter in terms of legality. I am honestly still amazed they have been able to get away without having a monopoly antitrust suit but I am sure they are always trying to figure out how to get closer to a monopoly without getting in trouble for having a monopoly.

Is it bad that i never cared for the look of this land in IOA. I have never cared for the oversized cutouts of the characters it reminds me of another citywalk. I would have preferred three dimensional figures made to size attached to those building. The structures do make it feel like a comic strip though and they are very colorful.

I am also probably the only one that never cared for what people call theming on the Hulk coaster although i haven't seen the queue after the update and have heard that it was improved from what was there previously

No it’s not bad. I feel the same way.
To me it comes off a little Six Flagish and cheap.
Love the Spidey ride however.
To me this all boils down to the Marvel coaster. If it is truly coming, then I’m on board with this ride as a family friendly attraction. Spider-Man is the perfect choice because 4-8 year olds love Spidey and would be devestated by a height requirement.
However, if this ride is all they plan for the next 5 years, then they should have stepped up a little more. The concept art for the Marvel Coaster showbuilding is fantastic and way beyond anything in Tomorrowland or Future World at EPCOT.
