Per Perplexity...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Avatar: The Way of Water uses a variable high frame rate presentation, with many scenes (especially underwater and some flying/action shots) shown at 48 fps and others effectively at 24 fps via duplicated frames. The entire feature is delivered as a 48 fps file to theaters, but portions are motion-treated to preserve a traditional 24 fps “cinematic” look in dialogue or calmer scenes

Without looking it up, please give the names of at least three characters in Avatar 2.
The blue one.
The girl blue one.
The bad one.

(And for bonus points: A dragon thing)

So because it made a lot of money it can’t have any criticism thrown against it? Yeah how about just because it made money and you like the format doesn’t mean it’s perfect James. I mean if people are getting nauseous going to your films because of the format it might not be the pinnacle of film making that you think it is.

Clearly I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the format if he is having to respond to criticisms about it.

The numbers + artistic freedom. You don't have to love it, but he does provide reasoning for his method.

The entire movie isn't in the high frame rate. Just certain scenes that call for it.

Just like a lot of new animation films use reduced frame rate for certain scenes.

It's an artistic choice.

Feel free to like or not like it. It's not a fad. And Cameron is using it explicitly for those scenes he believes is best suited for high frame rate.

I couldn't even tell watching Avatar 2 what was high frame rate v. normal.

Yes his basic reasoning is, "Its my movie I like it so take it or leave it, it makes money either way". And while he tries to deflect with brain "reasons" (and yes from the scientific standpoint I understand), that isn't actually addressing the criticism but rather trying to invalidate them.

Is the high frame rate for some sequences controversial?

I saw both versions and preferred regular 3D, but no one is forced to watch it a certain way. It shows in multiple formats so anyone can choose which version to see.
Thats what I was thinking. Unless something has changed, it’s also only shown in HFR in certain theaters. Most show it at the “normal” 24fps.
