Disney will bury any Uni opening if on the same day, 10 to 1 if not substantially more. No matter what the IP.

Jimmy Thick- Public prefers Disney.
Not in this case. Hobbit fans and public excitement for that would greatly out-weigh Avatar. Most kids in 2017-2018 will not know what James Cameron's Avatar is; they'll think it's a land about profile picture. :p

Its not Avatar so much as it's Disney, that is bigger than LotR or Potter combined.

Jimmy Thick- Disneyana for the masses...

there will be a serious hype machine created for this leading up to it

Of course, these boards here will be one, popular media will be through the roof. Florida news will probably have daily updates.

Jimmy Thick- Commercials spammed non-stop.

And is their success guaranteed? Can't top pigs with pigs.

Still do not think it will be popular, sure the Disney name is big, but Avatar isn't. Even New Fantasyland was not that hyped up until right before. Disney today is being left in the dust of companies like Uni who are obtaining popular and successful brand along with being on top of their game with construction and social media.

Take the series of talks Uni had when they announced Potter p.2, sure it was awkward but Disney never does stuff like that. Secondly Uni fully announced potter a year before the opening, Avatar was announced in fall of 2011 and they just broke ground. The excitement is done, yet Potter will be open before we know it and this sustains the hype surrounding it.

Disney needs a serious wake up call, people don't care about blue monkeys they care about popular culture. If Disney wants more people at the parks and wants a potter/WTFUDN (whatever the flick uni does next) swatter then add a Doctor Who and Star Wars land, people will come. They will not come in mass droves for Avatar.

And yes DAK will have an attendance boost, but nothing so big that it really fights with Potter.

no of course not...say how did cars 2 hurt cars land..it wasn't a good film.....are really going back to these debates..i get it you didn't like the movie, millions did whats the point..Pandora will be judged for the quality of the land not the movies, although I would trust james Cameron to come through (see aliens2 and terminator 2)

Yes, but for a brand to be marketable and attractive people need to like it. Why would people want to spend thousands to go to the world for a land they don't care about. People are much more frugal now because of our economy and that's not going to help Disney. Say you have three kids all 13+ and you have to choose between spending thousands at Disney for a vacation that lacks activities or a few hundred at Uni for parks and lands the kids will enjoy? I will always love Disney and I am excited to go to Avatar land, but you all are still in a mind set that Disney is the greatest and best when in reality Eisner sunk that ship.

No you got me wrong, I am not accusing you of saying Disney is the greatest, your attitude about the level of excitement for opening day in the public sphere is implying that because Disney is so great Avatar will be a success.

I really don't get the "no one will care about Avatar in 2017" argument. The Land is opening around the same time the first of three sequels will be out. Between Disney and the promotion for the movie, Avatar hype will be absolutely through the roof in that time window. I'm also guessing this is why it's "taking so long" to build it. They want to open it when the hype machine is running full speed.

I feel like Its ground hog day but here goes again, how many kids or adults even saw Song of the South? How popular is Splash Mountain? If the rides and the land wow people nobody will care what the IP is. Because of the success of Potter everyone is so convinced now that the IP is all that matters when it should be the rides and environment that matter.

I'm not going to plan a trip around ensuring that I am there on Day 1, but I probably will try to time my travel around that time to ensure that I can see it shortly after it opens. I'm in the camp that could care less about the movie Avatar in the abstract, but I still think it could be an awesome addition. Even if I'd never seen Avatar, I'd still like the opportunity to fly on a banshee. :)
