AVATAR breaks ground

I have seen people like yourself who have stated they will NEVER enter Pandoraland..Avatarville?? (Whatever) And I say BULLSQUIRT!! Whether it is the best use of the space or not, when it opens and it looks amazing (It will), people will have a change of heart, head their head in shame, and walk into this land of the giant blue smurfs. No one is going to go into AK and not visit it. Sorry, not happening.

There are some people here who will do this, but never admit on the boards that they did.

No, I think Magenta is the offspring of Mickey and Minnie.

I wish I could claim such noble parentage. :D But in truth, I'm Uncle Walt's spiritual nephew. And I'm as uncompromising as he was. I don't want the Disney parks to turn into parks with a lot of non-studio-developed junk and a little Disney. To be a hodge-podge of different properties that have no real connection with Disney. Yes, I've just described Universal - which is a pretty damn awesome place - but Disney is different from Universal, or at least SHOULD be different than Universal, but in a GOOD way. In my opinion, Disney parks don't need Star Wars, Marvel or Muppets to be successful. They just need to be Disney. That was the lesson taught by the failure of the original DCA. For the life of me, I don't see how anyone could think Avatar would be a good choice to boost AK when Disney has properties like the Lion King and The Jungle Book to work with. To me, the purchase of the rights to Avatar so it could be shoehorned into AK just demonstrated Robert Iger's own lack of faith in the Disney vault. The twit thought he had to look outside the studio to fix AK. Never mind the ongoing incredible popularity of The Lion King and that it's much more a natural fit into AK. Iger was looking at the young male demo alone for the latest hot flash in the pan with which to counter Potter, and he thought he found it. Because he's STUPID.

DCA 1.0 didn't fail because lack of "Disney" IP, even though that's often put forth by people outside and inside the Co.. It failed because it was a park that ignored many of the rules of great theme park design that WED/WDI invented (such as insulation from the outside world, place-making, hyper-detailed, elaborate attractions). DCA 1.0's best and most enduring parts had no Disney IP-connection (Condor Flats and Grizzly Peak). One of its best new pieces, BVS, was set outside Disney IP. When you shoe-horn Disney-IP in, it can weaken the end result, especially in the case of "toonification."

WDI could have built a 2nd Gate across from DL with zero Disney IP, and it could have been a massive hit. Similarly, they could have designed a park with 100% Disney IP and have it bomb. And the opposite of these two scenarios also applies. What really matters is vision, design, creativity and execution.

I agree. People can stomp their feet and shake their fist in the sky yelling loudly that it's not Beastly Kingdom being built but when Avatar opens they will come.

Your second paragraph is full of naught but speculation. Whereas we DO know what DID happen: as Iger himself admitted in a rare moment of intelligent insight, the original DCA didn't have enough Disney in it. So it failed. Plus it was crappy, full of lame junk like Muppets. Now it has Buena Vista Street, which is chock FULL of "Disney IP", I might add - it certainly is themed to Disney history - and Carsland, and DCA is now a huge hit. Facts trump speculation every time. :)

Hope you can hang in there for the FOUR YEARS it's going to take for Disney to build the thing. IF it doesn't get scrapped the moment Iger's out the door, that is.

I've been going to WDW for over 30 years, been there hundreds of times. I can wait. And if it takes 4 years to build it, that's indicative of problems at Disney. But if you think that it is going to be cancelled I've got a bridge to sell you...

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
I'm not "boycotting" AK. I'm just continuing to ignore it, due to lack of interest.
So, you don't go there now at all?
What about the other parks? How often?

I go yearly. 10 day Park Hopper passes. One day, 5-6 hours max. @ DAK.

The completion of Pandora, a night time safari, and an evening show will probably extend our DAK time to 2 days - one morning (rope drop til just after lunch - Flame Tree Barbeque, Baby!) and a late afternoon/evening visit to see the night time show.

DAK may just remain my least favourite park, but I expect to enjoy it a whole lot more than we do now.
