Auto Train

With airfares soaring higher than the actual planes, I figured I could drive down, but the way home, not so much. Has anyone taken the Autotrain from VA to Sanford FL?? Just 4 seats and a car were @$600. If we wanted to book a 'room', we'd have to add another $700. I'm going to WDW..NOTHING WILL STOP ME:animwink:

I've taken the Auto Train both ways. The food is great, the service is top-notch in the roomette cars [first class]. I've never tried the seats in coach.

The big advantage is not driving. The big detractor for me is the rough ride. I barely got any sleep from the amount the cars throw you around while you're in bed. Cell service is intermittent as well.

Taking the train actually makes my trip longer than just driving. I'm basically two days' drive from Disney, but I take one day getting to Lorton, stay over night then take the train, arriving the third day. So, two days driving or two and a half if I take the train.

I doubt I'd take it again.

I have done the auto train (and normal train from NY) on a number of occasions. The Auto Train is much better than normal amtrak, but still not my first choice of transit to FL. The ride does take longer than driving, but if you don't want to do it yourself it is a good substitute. Your dinner and breakfast are included and aren't too bad. The coach seats are somewhat larger airplane seats. I find them somewhat hard to sleep in for the extended period of time that you are on the train.

In 2007 we drove down and took the auto train home. Both DS's loved it; probably the novelty of it. For my DH and I, the trip seemed to last FOREVER. We boarded around 2:00 pm and didn't get into VA until around 2:00 the next day. The train stopped several times during the night, something about a brake heat sensor going off, and at times the train seemed to go about 10 MPH. We too were in coach seats, not the most comfortable to sleep in and the ride is bumpy. As a result, going to the bathroom for boys ages 5 and 7, well, let's just say it made the aim more difficult. And DH bumped his head on the bathroom door a few times - it's pretty small quarters. The food was good as was the service. I guess I'm glad we did it once, but I don't think I'd do it again unless I absolutely had no other choice.

We have never done it. checking into about 10 years ago (when we lived 2 miles from the Lorton, VA station). At the time we had an SUV which was oversized to them and would have cost us more for 5 people and the SUV then it was to fly so we did not do it. But we have had friend take it and just the same as the above posters they all said they are glad they did it once but would most likely never do it again. We have done the drive from Lorton to WDW several time and on average it took us about 14 hours...train takes almost 24 hours...then you have still drive once it reaches FLA.....I dont think it the long run its worth it.

My story is about the same. The only difference is that I had a friend who took the train down and he was in the coach seats. He said the train stopped a lot and he didn't get any sleep. It was cold and the doors kept opening and closing, it was noisy, and it took longer than if he had driven.
I also have an SUV now, and have had a crew cab pickup since 2003 that we used as the family station wagon=more expensive than a car.
From where we are in MD, it takes 16 to 18 hours to drive easy, lots of potty stops, etc. I actually enjoy the drive because it gives me a chance to relax and get from work mode into vacation mode. We also stay the night in Jacksonville on the way down to visit relatives (I know, not part of the scenario but I throw it in for accuracy). Day two is an easy 3 hour or less drive to Disney. The family starts getting really jazzed up around Daytona, which is also a part of the trip/routine.
I'll pass on the train to Disney and maybe take one out west for the train trip itself, but not as a means to get someplace. (I love trains by the way).

Thanks so much for your experiences! My Mom has a very weak stomach, and I didn't even consider it would be a rough ride! I decided to buy expensive airfare after all--taking at least 2 more days vacation just to drive or take the train, the gas, the hotels/meals en route, and the long boring ride..coming home would be the worst. Ah well, what does money mean if you don't spend it on something you love!

I was going to send you a PM, but you must have it turned off. You only live about 2 hours from where I'm at. I don't know what the plane fare is going to be, but I bet you wouldn't spend more than $300.00 on gas. You're around 14 hours from Kingsland Georgia, which is a nice overnight stop spot. It's an easy 4 hours to WDW from there. Day and a half coming back. Just something to think about. We always drive. (Flying is faster though obviously).

We are exploring taking the autotrain on our ride home in August. Anybody know of any Amtrak discounts other than AAA? I can't seem to find anything but I'm sure there is something.

We were looking to take this next week instead of driving, and putting our car on board. The ride there was affordable but the way home was a lot more, so we were going to drive home. My fear is that my nausea I've been having would be sky high on a train ride - and that wouldn't be fun. It's bad enough in the car, it's hard to say whether or not it would be worse on a train.

I've done regular Amtrak trains before though, and always thought it was kind of fun. There's a few booths you can sit in & eat, and set up your laptop or read a book. It's relaxing!

It appears that I may be in the minority here but we have taken the Auto Train dozens of times and enjoy it quite a bit. We also have found that, unless driving straight thru, for us it's shorter in time than driving. We live approximately 2 hours from Sanford so we do not need to leave for the train station until about noon, it is requested that you get to the station 2 hours before departure which is 4 pm. If the train is on time departing and arriving, which has been for us all but one time you will arrive between 8-9 am, it can take over an hour for your vehicle to be removed from the train so you may not be leaving the station until after 10 am. There is no way I could leave my home in Port St Lucie Fla. at noon and be in Lorton Va. at 9 am the next day with an overnight stop. As I stated earlier you can drive straight thru and get there faster, I have done it, many times, the last time I left at 4:30 pm and was in Philadelphia by 9 am and was so wiped out from the travel that the day was completely a waste to me.

Financially, if you get your trains tickets well in advance, we have calculated it to be about even driving, with an overnight stop, or taking the train (coach) and that is for 2 adults and 2 children.

As for the train itself I have found it to be a pleasure. I have always found the attendants to helpful and courteous and it's always fun conversing with others that you meet on the trip. My children love it! When they were younger it was so much easier on them not to be stuck in a car seat for 18 hours. They could get up and move around and my daughter always seemed to make a new friend. It's not always so but we have noticed when assigning seats the Auto Train tries to keep the train cars segregated to families with children and separate cars of adults traveling without children as much as possible. The coach seats are comparable to a first class airline seat. They do recline but for some it may not be enough for an enjoyable night sleep. If you can sleep in a recliner then you will have no problem at all. If you get lucky enough, as we have on some occasions, the train car will not be completely fully so you can move to a space where you can stretch out and occupy both seats. The only thing my wife has complained about is on occasion after getting off the train she said she still had the sensation that she was still moving and rocking, such as when you get off a boat that you've been on all day, and this comes from a roller coaster nut so she is not really prone to motion problems, it has not been a problem, she doesn't feel nausas or sick just an observation and something she has mentioned in the past. As for a rough ride, your on a train what do expect, but we're not talking about a roller coaster either, sometimes walking can be challenging after a few glasses of the complimentary wine at dinner though. I have never really experienced anything more than the gentle rocking back and forth myself. My final take on it is you should really try it at least once if not for anything else but to say you have tried it. It's most likely is not for everyone, especially for the one just can't get there quick enough, but if you want to slow down just a bit and enjoy the journey you just may find that you can't see why you didn't do this before.

Every now and then Amtrak will post some sort of promotion but I never have found anything more then that and AAA. Let us know if you find anything.

I always wanted to do it but for me to get to the train its a 4 hour ride. My friends have done it and liked it, especially saved mileage on their car.

We have looked into it but we decided against it because we were not going to save any time. It would actually take longer. So we didn't do it.

Thanks for all your insight! I paid a fortune for airfare. I think I'll try the auto train when I retire and have to time to enjoy the trip stress free. And I won't take my Mom on it--she'd be green! She gets dizzy in my car!
