August heat at Disney

Hi everyone !

My question is about Florida heat in August ! We normally travel to Disney in November for Christmas decorations, lower crowds and lower temperatures. My oldest son however is starting High School next year and we no longer feel that we can take him out of school for vacations.

We are looking at August of next year for a trip as from what I read, crowds are pretty good from mid to late August.

When we were in Orlando this past November, many of the days reach 96F and we found it surprisingly manageable... my question is, does 96F in November feel the same as 96F in August ? Or is August much more humid ?

Thanks for any info !! :)

Summer heat is.. taxing.

It's the kind of heat where you don't mind being soaked with sweat.. because EVERYONE is soaked through with sweat. People often take breaks during the day because it's too hot.

On our last trip, we found ourselves staying out till 12-2am because it was more tolerable.. but it was also at times 98 degs at midnight!

You find out just how popular the fans and misters are...

I mean.. look how hot my kids look

There is no skirting the issue.. it's body soaking hot. But there are lots of things to do to cool down, etc. But if you are prone to heat stroke or other issues.. I would avoid it.

We still had a blast.. but there is no avoiding it's as hot and wet as it comes.

And that was just the end of June!

Yikes ... sounds like we may have to rearrange things ! I sweat in the lowest of temperatures when I'm running around and do not deal well with humidity ... heat is alright, but humidity kills me ! Kids and their education ... it's ruining my good time !! :ROFLOL:

We have been during the same time frame the past 3 years for the exact same reason...Mot wanting to take the kids out of high school. Before that NO problem. It is very HOT and we found that each year we would get up and out early. THen break for a sit down lunch inside. Then head back to for a swim and nap/rest time. Then back out to start all over. We tired to stay out of the sun when the sun was HIGH and its hottest. We would take in show we might normally pass up just to get a break and some ac. We passed on the soda and drank a lot more water. We we also stay out later and talke advantage of the late EMH just like the above post. We live in VA so we are use to heat and humity so we just adjust to keep as cool as possible and make the best of it.

That is why I picked my alias....

It is 85 or so 95% humility at 8am an it just worse until the afternoon storms and it does storm just about every afternoon.

I hate it myself and lucky me I think I maybe at WDW in August this year.

If you are sensible you will be fine--those of us from the UK often have to visit WDW in August as that is when our school vacations are. Go out early, there will always be one park with an early opening time. We go back to base between 12 and 2 for swim/lunch/ rest. Then we are ready for the afternoon and evening. The air con in the stores/rides are so good ,you can go inside for relief. We have never felt uncomfortable --believe me the weather in the UK can be miserable!!

I have done Disney August and it is pretty hot and humid. If you are able I would go as early as you can in June or as late in August. I found those days to be the least busy and early June not to be as hot and humid as it is late June, July and August.

I've been going the last week or two of August for a few years now.

It is more humid. It is hot.

We still manage to go all day in the parks and have a great time. I strongly recommend liberal use of deoderant as a courtesy to others. :lookaroun

Crowds are reasonable during the week after the locals start school in mid-August. Weekends can be a bit busier, but nothing close to holidays or spring break crowds. We'll usually go back to our resort to shower and change before going out for dinner.

Make sure you stay hyderated, keep sunscreen or sunblock on and you'll be fine.

My family has been there in mid August the past few years. We've taking advantage of free dining, before the kids head back to school. You know it's hot when your hair sweats.;)

Its not so much the heat but the humidity will kill ya! :brick:That being said, yes it is hot but remember there is always a thunder storm to cool you off and they dont usually last that long. It is managable you just have to plan breaks like in the afternoon head back to the hotel and go for a swim, then enjoy night time Disney! That is what we usually do when we go in the summer time. remember to stay hydrated and dress appropriatly, Either way I really hope you enjoy your trip!

sounds like it's time for your first annual all adults trip. we floridians melt in august. i find the only way it's doable at that time of year is to hit the park at rope drop, leave the park for the resort around 1-ish swim/relax/whatever, have dinner around 5 or 6 then go back into a park (yes, at night it's still hot out, we don't get much of a swing in temps/humidity just because it's dark out).

The key is to be prepared. KNOW that it's hot, KNOW to stay hydrated, KNOW to use sunblock and KNOW to do inside things in the afternoons

We're going the first week in August this year. First time going that week. We're planning on going to the parks in the afternoon on most days. We have one day we're planning on an early visit to the MK. Then back to the hotel to hang by the pool.

I grew up in the metro Orlando area. The weather here in southeast Texas is often very similar to Orlando particularly in the summertime. ((Last summer we went well over a month without a full day under 100 degrees. We live pretty close to the coast so humidity here really is just as bad.)) We generally travel to WDW in cooler months (November and early May being the warmest). Even being what we consider acclimated to the heat & humidity, it was quite a difference this last year when we went in September. Hot is not the word. It's more like baking or steaming. Yes, I reference cooking because that's exactly what it felt like to me, like I was cooking. That said, it's still fun. You just have to adjust from your usual WDW habits to those that allow you to survive in the heat & humidity. I've come to the conclusion that going to WDW during those extreme conditions vastly differs from daily life because at home I work completely around being outside at all. I run before the sun comes up. I have teenage sons to take care of the yard. If I have to get out of the house I'm only outside long enough to get from the car in a parking lot to my destination then back out to the car. I do NOT go outside during the daytime. There's a reason for that. At WDW there's a certain amount you're going to be outside. Just get creative and try to make that time as short as humanly possible.

Even in the middle of summer, us local Floridians prefer to stay inside with the a/c on. I've been in the summer and it's doable. You just have to accept that it's going to be hot and humid. You will sweat. I start sweating by about 8:30 am. If you are from up north, layer on the sunscreen because you will burn. The most important tip is to drink lots of fluids. Preferably water. You will need it to stay hydrated. We don't stop when we go, because can tolerate it better, but it is still rough even for us locals. Take advantage of the afternoon showers. Thunderstorms pass quickly and people are hiding, so use it to ride.

We have been in August the last two times down for the same reason. We are doing it again this year (13th to 18th) and never have had a problem. We are from the northeast andJ know Florida is hot in August. Like it has been said, water, ride, stores, food, swim, and afternoon tshowers all play here. Good luck.

I can't speak for August, but we were there in late May 2011 & that was almost unbearable. I can't imagine how much tougher Aug. would be. For the record, we live in Bama & are used to the heat, but when you add all the concrete to soak up the sun it adds several degrees to the actual temp.
