Are there mailboxes in the parks? Or do you have to mail postcards from your resort?

There is a mail box at town hall at the MK. I am pretty sure there is also a stamp machine there as well. I never noticed them in the other parks, but they may be there as well. You can always mail a postcard from your resort too.

There are mailboxes ALL OVER the parks. I know of several in the World Showcase (one in Mexico is all I can recall off hand), and there's lots at MK--I know one just inside the turnstiles, on either end. And MGM actually uses "regular" mailboxes a la 1940's ;)

And as I recall, if you mail your stuff from inside the parks, they get a special postmark...? :)

Really? I'll have to do that.

I remember being able to purchase stamps, too, from a stand that sold postcards. I believe it was the Magic Kingdom and it was on the left as you went into the park. I bought my postcards there with stamps and mailed them just a few feet away. :)

You have to look closely for the boxes though, as most of them are incredibly well themed. In fact, I used to think they were just there for the realism, but I was wrong and they are actually working mail boxes.

Oh well, guess you can't have everything :animwink:
Yeah, for many years I mailed postcards from the mailboxes in the MK (and the other parks) in the hope that they would have a special postmark. I found out later that a CM just bags up all the mail from MK (and the other parks and resorts) and it is sent via the Lake Buena Vista Post Office branch to the central post office in Orlando where it gets postmarked. Bummer.

The best I recall is that if you mail an item at WDW within Orange County, it goes to Orlando Post Office. If you mail an item at WDW within Osceola County it goes to Kissimmee Post Office.

Since Lake Buena Vista IS a real town, you would think that they would do their own postmark? :veryconfu

So THAT'S what those mailboxes are for! :hammer:

I could never for the life of me figure out why the heck they had mailboxes in the park.

Now I know. Good deal.

I haven't checked lately, so perhaps they do the postmarks now. However, with such a large volume of mail as is produced at WDW, they most likely still do the postmarks at the central post office in Orlando.

Many years ago, I put several postcards in one of the mailboxes at the MK. I anticipated that the stamp would be canceled with a beautiful postmark. No such luck. I've tried this technique over the years without success.

I'm not sure of all the locations of mail boxes, but I do know that in addition to the ones mentioned, there is one in frontierland in MK. It's on the Trading Post building on the Country Bears side.

According to the 1992 Birnbaum's, it seems that the mail has been sent through the LBV office for at least a decade and a half :

MAIL: Postcards are for sale at many spots in the resorts and around the Magic Kingdom, among them Main Street Stationers on the west side of Main Street. Postage stamps can be purchased at the front desk at any of the WDW hotels, at the trading posts at Fort Wilderness, at City Hall on Main Street, at Earth Station at Epcot Center, and Guest Services at the Disney-MGM Studios. The old-fashioned olive-drab mailboxes that punctuate Main Street are no longer offical U.S. post boxes, but letters can be mailed there for pickup by Disney employees and subsequent transportation to the Lake Buena Vista post office. Postmarks read "Lake Buena Vista", not "Walt Disney World". All window services are available at the Lake Buena Vist post office, including postal money order and stamp sale, registry, and certification. The post office is located at the Crossroads of Lake Buena Vista shopping center.
This thread made me think about the dearth of postcards at WDW. I guess people just don't send them anymore, and for people like me who collected them they have been replaced with the (far more profitable) pins. Why bother writing a postcard when you can just call or text anyone who cares on your cell from in front of Cinderella Castle or anywhere else in the World. (Come on, who hasn't called someone and said, "Guess where I am?", LOL)

While I loved collecting them, I can't say I miss writing them; I have unpleasant memories of being in a hotel room with my mother standing over me with a list of names and addresses while I'm trying to come up with things to say in these postcards that must be sent out so they arrive home before we do. Most of the time, they were as sincere as writing, "Have a great summer!" in a high school year-book, yet they always had to be original as the relatives at home would surely compare.

Oh, well. You win some, you lose some.

Me. Even if I had a cell phone - which I don't and don't want - I'd never take it to WDW. I have however, taken addresses with me and sent out postcards while at the park to friends all around the world.

There's also a mailbox in EPCOT where you walk through the innovations buildings from the outer rides into the center area that i just first noticed this trip =p
