Are there mailboxes in the parks? Or do you have to mail postcards from your resort?

Me. Even if I had a cell phone - which I don't and don't want - I'd never take it to WDW. I have however, taken addresses with me and sent out postcards while at the park to friends all around the world.

Well we unfortunately all can't be that free floating without a cell phone, enjoy it while you can, there may come a day when you'll have to have one.

We usually send postcards from the resorts and from the parks each visit, of course we also usually get home 4-5 days before they reach their intended destinations.

At this point it's getting a bit OT, but I agree. It's not so much about free-floating for me (I have my cell off quite often) but the safety value of it is what keeps a cell in my pocket. It's like a seatbelt to me - sure, 99.9% of the time you don't need it, but that .01% of the time you do you are going to be some danged happy you had it. Anyone who's ever gotten a flat tire and faced walking 10 miles instead of being able to instantly call AAA from the comfort of their car can tell you, LOL.

I understand the aversion to cells because of the horrible behavior such a large portion of people have while on one (I too grimiace when I'm sitting indoors somewhere and some yahoo pulls theirs out), but I can't deny it's essential usefulness as a tool (especially while traveling) so I keep one on me. However, I'm in charge of it - it's not in charge of me; I think that's when people head down the wrong paths with cells.

I had one for about four years. Used it to the extreme. Then one day, I cancelled my account. Realized how absurd it was that I was so tied to something that I didn't need like that. Realized that most people's cell phones become an honest-to-goodness addiction rather then for safety or emergencies like most people initially get them for. I disconnected my account and haven't looked back. And I don't regret a moment of it.

*shrugs*

Then again, while I love technology - I own and run six domains, two forums, have an online jewelry business, cable modem for about eight years, digital cable, dvr, video game systems, wireless network in our home, etc, etc. etc, - I also find there's something amazingly fullfilling about doing things the old fashioned way sometimes. I participate in several groups that are dedicated to things such as mail art, letters and hand crafted swaps. There's really a great sense of satisfaction to send off something tangible. I've mailed postcards from WDW many a time - even to friends internationally. I've also mailed off photos I've taken at Disney, turned into cards to share the more personal, physical side of the experience.

I'm not saying it's for everyone or that no one should have cell phones. I guess I'm just saying that sometimes we let that kind of stuff control us more then we think. So next time you go, instead of calling a friend, bring some addresses and buy a postcard or two. You'll smile as you drop it in the box and they'll smile to see something cheerful in their mailbox. :animwink:

Completely agree. :)

I'm much the same as you describe - I think tech is great but only as far as it actually improves life.

I make many of the same points when I explain to people how I am just fine happy with analog cable and my TiVo, and I don't need digital cable with 24 channels of HBO and music and all that jazz...as long as I get my "Gilmore" and my "24" I'm happy LOL.

I always intend on taking the advice you gave above but I never end up doing it; I'm going to make a point to send out at least 3 postcards from WDW next trip. I won't let myself ride E:E until I do. ;)
